I recently started making these kinds of audio pieces because of you. One of the things I'm doing is using an old tape answering machine and setting it up so I can call it to record loops over the phone. Kinda fun lil twist.
You have such an amazing body of work. It's so consistently great, evocative and creative. It's a blessed feeling to listen to another track every time.
You know, I've never considered making a tiny modular box that only fits a few modules that I can connect to hardware synths/sound sources. That's actually really clever. I can see I'm going to be researching a few small modules now. Great work!
Haha I didn't even think it was that clever, I only have a few modules and didn't love the look of my empty skiff, so I made a tiny one, but thank you - I'll take the compliment :)
It does seem super obvious. I think I'm just so used to seeing these huge racks with dozens of modules on them, the idea of making a box that can fit, say, 2 or 3 that have specific modules to shape sound without actively producing it (no VCOs etc...) never really occurred to me. I guess I was over thinking it XD.
Awesome travel size set-up. Seeing MIs Clouds: there's a great free rack emulator out there you might have stumbled upon, that is definately worth checking out: VCV rack; comes with a metric ton of also free modules (noteworthy a bunch of mutable instrument modules).
I am convinced I need tape decks back into my life. Is there anything specific to look for when acquiring tape players for use in modular and DAW's? You have inspired me my friend.
Very lovely sounds, I like the microcosm that you can create with such a small setup. Do you find Rosie to be essential? I did quite a lot of research and the world seems to be split in two: those who say that you need an in/out audio module, and those who say that it's useless and you can just use adaptors
I see you using the MultiStomp in a lot of your videos. I'm putting together a little tape loop set up on a limited budget and wonder if you think that would be a good pedal to start with vs buying a few individual Behringer pedals? I'd really appreciate some input. Keep up the great work!!
if you're just starting off i think individual pedals are nice so you can understand what the effects are and do. the multistomp is good after you understand what the effects you like are and want a convenient digital package, but honestly nothing beats the immediacy of turning pedal knobs.
@@amuletsmusic Thanks so much for the response! I've used Ableton for years and have a fairly good understanding of effects. I know the MultiStomp probably doesn't offer the immediacy of individual pedals, but I thought I would still be able to do some knob turning on it lol
Hi mate love your videos and music! You've inspired me to want to process my guitar through tape. I only have a little walkman round the house actually, is it possible to use that in any way for loops or would it just be playback like in this video? Cheers! Released one album on tape. There's a cool uk tap label actually my friend runs if you ever want to release a short run of limited cassettes with him. Let me know :)
Thanks for this, your videos are a true inspiration for me, I've only recorded my mixes in the past to tape (A Tascam 8 Track that I have no for a long time ...), not more, but this seems so interesting ... As I cant find so much information on this: I want to collect some tapeplayers to start experimenting with loops and modificating them, I found a "Panasonic RQ-P255" and some "Sony Walkmans" here in germany for not much money, is this ok for the start or do I have to buy specific tape players to be able to put for example an pitchknob on it or to create a tape delay with another tape player ... Especially the pitchknob would be great, do you know any online sources where I can learn how to build that? I only know that I have to put a potentiometer somewhere on the motor, but thats all of my knowledge :D Greets and keep the great music coming its very calming and dreamy :)
Just in case: there's a TipTop Audio uZeus on the right corner of the box. It's a great powering module if you're building a small system or one with open backside. The drawback of the module is that if you intend to build a bigger one with say Koma Cases or other modal build, you'll have to buy one for every row. Koma has their own powering system which is specifically made for this problem, 4ms has a similar and of course if you're going with the obvious budget choice, Doepfer cases have A-100 powering build in already.
Ellotus13 Thanks, my friend. I’m looking at getting a Morphagene to process some guitar but am stumped as to what other ‘stuff’ I need to get to bring sound in/out.
That's the hard part about modular. It takes a shitload of time to figure everything out. I could give you some pointers, if you want to? What's your vision on how you want to use the Morphagene?
Ellotus13 So, basically a looper/capturer that I can use to mangle and chop the incoming audio. I saw a few other nice modules to add to the CV madness, too... If I wanted to start with just the Morphagene one or two other CV/effect modules, what would you recommend to get that system rolling? I was originally looking at the Make Noise 0-Coast just to get started but figured I’d want to be expanding straight away.
I'd say that a couple good (and really often talked about) choices are to get a Make Noise Maths and a couple of VCAs. Maths is an expansive module and it's really hard to get a hang of it online, but to get an overview it will work as an LFO (which you can use to modulate the parametres of a given module. It's best to visualize it as an invisible hand twisting the knobs), or gate (basically it tells the parameter to hit. When you press a key on a keyboard it's a gate), envelope (to control attack, decay, sustain and release) or clock (self explanatory). Maths will give you a good starting point on CV control and it has like seven channels so it's quite expansive. VCAs are a tough one, to me it seemed like no one could meaningfully explain them until Mylar Melodies did a video on them. They basically can work as either audio level control or CV level control and they are paramount. The problem you hit with not having a VCA is basically that you won't be able to control how much the other CV:s go, so if you want to modulate pitch without a VCA it will cover a massive area of pitch (my guess is like two-ish octaves). Erica Synths has the Pico-series, which I would recommend, because they are affordable and take up like 3HP of space. After that it's really up to you. Effects wise Erb-Verb and Rainmaker are really damn cool, but quite pricey as well. I'd recommend getting a filter, because they open up such cool sound possibilities, a couple of cool ones from the top of my head are Doepfer A-124 (kind of a 303-type of rough filter with loads of character) and Vintage Synth Lab VCF-74 MK2 (people describe it as "extremely musical") Phew, that's a massive wall of text. Hope it doesn't stump you even further :P There's loads of other stuff like waveshapers (kinda like modular distortion/fuzz), wavefolders (expanded waveshaping options, really damn cool) and this and that but if you plan on opening it up with a Morphagene, those two are pretty much essential.
Hey man! Loved this video! Those tape loops are so smooth! Bit of a technical question about that; how do you get the pad do go smoothly throughout the loop? Every time I play a continuous sound on my loops it cuts out somewhere. I don't think this is due to the loop itself, but due to the fact that I disengage record and there's a little bit of blank space on the tape. So my question to you is, how do you get it so smooth and continuous? Thanks man, you are such a continuous inspiration to me and your content is incredible. Keep doing what you're doing!
how much did it cost you in total to build that smalleurorack? I am poor but really interested in building a clouds circuit (as cheep as possible) (to poor to "get into" eurorack), pls help thanks!
it only cost me a few hundred i think? its been a while. also i built the case out of foamcore inspired by this video ua-cam.com/video/mf0Z34LJ8Y8/v-deo.html

I think the Tubes are in need of replacement. It lights up & all the Mechanical bits are go√ But you can see it's guts in a Video I made. @@v0Xx60 google for lunchbox modular, there are dedicated skiffs for that purpose built from pelican mini boxes and various other small lunchboxes.

Love the way your mix really opens up at about the two minute mark. Great work.
Love the tiny modular 😎
really beautiful textures you can almost touch, very very inspiring stuff - particularly from 2:00 onwards!
This is a cardinal sin of edm right here
bowwwwww chk chk bow bow chshhhh
you need to add some modulation to clouds (like with Maths, or some other LFO); opens up another universe. great work!
getting there for sure
This reminds me of The Disintegration Loops
and this is what I call heaven
bravo très belle installation musicale - jolis sons _ Congratulations very beautiful music installation - nice sounds

Could you insert a mic into a Cloud. I tried, but I didn t succeed, inclusive with a preamp.

Where did you get a little tiny modular case?
Its cool
I love that ! Did you need some pre amp for tape to modular synth ?
Really cool, man. What have you got in your modular rig aside from the Clouds and Rosie? What’s powering them? Love the wobbly modulations here.
