as a person with ADHD (Vata type is my dominant dosha) I laugh every time my anxiety "gives" me a new phobia. I know I will overcome it soon enough because I will get BORED with it 😂😂 And yeah, my anger doesn't last long either, simply because I can't stay at unnecessary emotions for too long ('unnecessary' = is not solving the problem).

    Personal notes:
Vata: so it's harder to stay in one lane for long stretches but it's easier to get excited for a different lane and works better with frequent breaks.
(High acceleration, low top speed kind)
For these people, rotating between (same set) tasks is much easier and better than forcing themselves to stick to one thing. Rigid work times are not suited.
Pitfalls for these peoples are generally worry and anxiety orientated due to the wandering nature of these minds they tend to see problems that might not even exist or matter, so recognise this about your mind that you are prone to seeing problems that may not be there and trust in yourself.
Over time let the excitement win over the anxiety, so if you see yourself getting too anxious then switch, and if you're a vata mind the excitement from the switch will be good enough to make the mind move over.
Pitta: Steady, regular, traditional kind of motivation. Good with working regularly, harder to get going again after a break. Are you intolerant to the idiocy of others? (Litmus test). Pitfall: interpersonal conflict.
Kaphas: ( low acceleration, high top speed kind)
Take longer to get into the groove, but once they're in they can really shine. Pitfall is that they tend to be more prone towards excessive self criticism and depression due to a lack of visible progress despite their efforts; as a result they are more prone to giving up right before the pace is about to set in, their own nature must be accepted and understood in order to allow themselves to be patient

Personally I wrote my notes in a small note book that I carry everywhere I go, though that may be a we bit extreme.
What you did does have the advantage that others can use your notes as a reminder and maybe encourage them to write notes too. That kinda thing encourages to write notes yourself to inspire people or something like that.
Something I feel (similarly to Uncle Iroh), is that people around bound to one group and personally I have a mix of Vata and Kapha.

Just learned I was a Kapha. Always destroyed in the morning, my energy shines at 3PM to 6PM. I annoyed my bosses with questions but after a while I was one of the most productive people they could find. I feel like this motivation style helps me to be a good teacher because I learn the learning process itself and people often came to me to say I was a good explainer. I really remember the worries and questions that I had so I know mostly what questions other people might have. My motivation is slow but steady, its not hard work that pays off for me, its steady work, therefore perseverance pays more than anything else. It really fits mostly what he says. Self critical and prone to depression is really accurate to me. My head doesn't let me go

Each time he introduces a type, I think: "oh yeah! That's totally me!" By the time Dr K hit Kapha, I realized that I have been all three at different points in my life and that I have changing degrees of Vata, Pita and Kapha all roiling around inside of me. I think it's like Dr. K said. There really isn't a one size fits all. We probably get different combinations of these motivation types depending on our immediate environment or life circumstances, and I think the way to deal with that is to adapt our mode of being accordingly.

Also food, substances, lifestyle, and perhaps exercise and other physiological stress can change your active doshas. For example I find that drinking coffee stirs the pitta in me and taking Marijuana stirs the vata in me.

Pitta : be careful of inner conflict, be more tolerant of others.
Kapha : you might be slow in figuring out stuff but once you figure it out, you don't forget easily . Be careful and don't be too self critical, recognise it will take you some time so give yourself time

I’ve always thought of myself as lazy and completely lacking in motivation, and that because of that I would achieve nothing in life and would be forever frustrated with myself. When kids in school would study for 4 hours two days before an exam. I would study for 30 minutes to 1 hour every day a week or two weeks before an exam. And I always said I did it because “I know I’m lazy”. I know many people who love me but have unconsciously hurt me by asking me to be more Pitta and telling me I’m lazy. Anyways, thanks.

I'd say don't be dumb and consider dopamine addiction. That isn't a excuse for your constant craving for content and being constantly bored of everything, not being able to do activities alone because your brain is so high on dopamine all the time you just can't do any normal activity outside the internet or whatever else addiction you *might* have. That isn't being VATA. We aren't BINARY nor BLACK OR WHITE to have something ''instantly click'' like a answer to a math question. That being said, you can for sure be Vata, my main point is that this can be a ''study'' for life, and something to determine your success and overall happiness in life, so it might be something you wanna experiment first before considering yourself like that like reading a zodiac sign or something.

I have treated myself as either a Vata or Pitta for years. Always with an unsatisfactory result on some level. I compared myself to those of my peers I saw most immediately as admirable. But, based on some honest introspection, I think the Kapha mindset is what describes me best. I have never contemplated treating my motivation with patience, and respect for the long term. It simply didn’t make sense without the context of this explanation. I do my best when I do this instinctively, and I wholeheartedly thank you for sharing a perspective that doesn’t seem to exist in our fast paced society. I will try patience, and trust in my long game more from now on, and this thought relieves me greatly. Not because I believe it is some secret to success, but because I feel more honest with who I am. Thank you.

I want to be able to create a career with all of my interests (most of which are in the realm of art & creativity) but my anxiety and motivational blocks completely fuck me up.. It doesn't help that many people in my life have no problem constantly reminding me of time passing and that I've not accomplished anything....I'm frozen with fear and discouragement.

This video gave me an incredibly helpful framework for thinking about myself and my relationships with my coworkers. I am like hard core pitta but my PhD advisor is definitely vata, and that's caused some tension and distraction for me as I get frustrated with his style of mentorship. And he's verbatim told me to think of work and motivation as a series of sprints rather than a marathon, but when I tried to adopt that style it was miserable for me. I found it so hard to "just do what I'm interested in" and get a new feeling of motivation each day. I've figured out that I need that steady 9-5 workday and a project to focus on and get deep into to stay motivated, and trying to gauge what I want to do on any particular day really stresses me out. Just having this framework for our 2 styles and understanding that we have different motivation styles is so helpful for me. So thank you!

It explains why I find people with other styles to be distracting. I am still not sure how to navigate this style, but it is an entré. Thanks, Dr. K.

Hey.. Recently was recommended your channel during a time of low motivation at work, and a lot of what you've discussed has really resonated with me. I've taken a lot of notes in regards to ADHD and motivation. In another video, you said Motivation is actually the ability to hold a though in your mind for an extended period of time. In the context you explained, this made sense, as other intrusive thoughts can replace what it is that you truly want (self doubt, anxiety, etc). You recommended meditation, to help strengthen the mind to keep focus on a single thought.
However, in this video, when talking about the "air" type of motivation, you say it is common or normal for minds to shift from one thing to another, and that's okay. You said air types should not force yourself to follow through. How do these two ideas work together, or work differently than I'm imagining?
Love your videos. The internet needs more people like you!

From my understanding of his talks (which could be completely wrong) you can shift between tasks so long as they're all productive and a part of some bigger goal. Motivation is just about holding that thought in your head, but if your stamina for doing so is disadvantaged then it's good to have more than one area that contributes to the same goal. So if you need to make a video you can spend an hour on the script, an hour sourcing pictures and materials you will use, and an hour storyboarding it and envisioning it. All different areas of focus but still all contribute to the same goal, so the motivation is to work on the video, but the way you go about doing it is by making that task contain more variability.

I discovered Dr. K one week ago and there is no going back. I love to see that someone is integrating Indian Ayurveda and stuff with the modren aspects. It makes me feel connected to my roots as I see in India as a psychology major that people and researchers are running or inclined towards a western approach forgetting their heritage. Also, about the different motivation styles, is it possible to haved mixed motivation styles? For example, whenever I draw or practice karate I find my motivation to be Pitta style(also i can't do them all day long otherwise my parents will disown me😂) and when I am studying I identify myself with Vatta style. So, can we have mixed motivation styles?

Oftentimes, though, my experience is that I keep waiting for Dr. K to get to the category that describes me, and then all of a sudden the video ends. I have a samskara I've been trying to work through of feeling left out, abnormal, and sometimes less than human, and it really gets going on things like this. maybe you're a combination? even if none of these apply, these categories only ever serve to generalize and pigeonhole people in an attempt to understand their differences. It's okay to not conform to the expectations of society or the apparent majority of people because we all need to stop thinking of 1 (or in this case 3) types/ways as THE perfect solution for everyone. At least that's what I'll take away from this.

While I agree, i need to say that there really isnt anything like the "slow metabolism" most people think they have. The difference is minor at best. The real difference can be most of the time explained by NEAT(non excercise activity thermogenesis). Some people just move around more then others, especially unconcious movements like the way you shake your leg while sitting or the time you are standing/walking instead of the time you are sitting makes a huge difference that is far bigger then metabolism.
Having a bad metabolism is at least for the majority of people a position of denial.

    • @Harishimomo
      @Harishimomo 3 роки тому +8

@@yusafmalik5171 yup, and there is more than just anecdotal evidence supporting what @thoughtrover said! Just to share a bit more, what most people perceive as metabolism is probably indirectly caused by a protein called "leptin". Basically, it alters the appetite of a person depending on the amount of body fat they have. So, it helps auto-regulate people to a particular body fat percentage. As an example, 2 different people will feel hunger differently at 15% body fat. Odds are that the body fat percent it targets varies based on genetic and non-genetic factors combined

    • @TapOnX
      @TapOnX 2 роки тому

I was looking for a comment like this. The entire bit about metabolism sounds like poorly constructed strawman of what "western" medicine supposedly gets wrong. It is common knowledge, that the base metabolic rate varies from person to person, and depends on the individual's body mass, body fat content, height, skin area and so for. And "Western" medicine is not exactly oblivious to the fact that some of the causes for these differences go beyond these parameters, or even are yet to be discovered. And then we are presented with the three souls theory. I have watched several of his videos, and I was satisfied with what seemed like honest, scientific approach. But nope, apparently this is a yet another mental health channel that subjects a vulnerable audience to lowkey religious/ideological indoctrination. And that just breaks my trust in the rest of the content. Seriously, I know I am like a year late with this comment, but if anyone reads this, am I approaching this wrong?

I don't like conflict or competition, and I want the freedom to explore any new ideas that catch my interest. For me, the solution to achieving motivation was to find a new problem to solve or puzzle to figure out. Even if I'm digging the same well (to use Dr. K's terminology) using different tools is enough to help me keep my interest, most of the time. I had a thought about Vata/ Dynamic style motivation.
The moment you described this type of motivation I knew it was my own. You mention getting excited about something and then not following through. I feel this way, I think that there is some initial follow through. The excitement drives me enough to get going on that something because I am impatient and want to try it out, whatever it may be. The follow through is actually quite substantial depending on the excitement level. Sometimes it dies off with a vengeance. Sometimes the something I was excited about never gets revisited.
Thanks for the videos Dr. K. I would love to be on your show one day. If not I'll keep learning through others! Best of luck to all.

I could not have related more when he said "once 3pm tolls around I am done, my stamina is shot". I felt so validated ahaha. I wake up excited and ready to tackle everything but I always feel like I am tired before I consider my day done.
Now onto learning more about this type, I am so freaking excited :D This feels like a whole new world especially after a whole year of failed attempts at keeping myself motivated for things I want to do.

This explains so much! I'm pretty sure I'm a Kapha, according to Dr. K's explanations.
In high school, I took a calculus class, and it was far more fast-paced than what I was used to. Every day was a new topic. I held on pretty well until about mid-term, when the topics became significantly more difficult. From then until a couple weeks before the end of the term, I was devastated. My friends understood the topics quickly, but I stayed after school with the teacher each day to ask every question I had until, at the end of our meeting, I felt like I finally understood the topic well enough to continue. My friends would have to explain things to me as well, and like I said, I was devasted. I felt incredibly dumb, and once we started doing practice AP tests a few weeks before the end of the term, my scores reflected how I felt. But, things started to change when we were reviewing what we went over during the year. I needed little review to remember past topics, while my friends needed a lot of review, but they still learned quickly. On the last few practice AP tests, I was finally on par with the others.
Additionally, I am definitely the type of person who could work on the same thing for hours upon hours and not get bored of it. It takes me a long time to get into things, but once I do, I don't want to have any distractions demanding my attention because I know if I go and do something else, I won't be able to come back and be as focused as when I left; because of this, I'll often delay eating for a couple hours or get food an hour earlier, haha.
This video made me feel much better about myself, but it honestly somewhat feels like I'm just making excuses for being dumb. Maybe that is what I'm doing. Regardless, the things Dr. K said in this video made so much sense, so I will try Kapha learning strategies and see whether I improve or not.

One trick for slow motivators is to start thinking about something early, like maybe the day before. Break up the task into multiple parts (by planning it out) over the course of a day and work on it periodically. Interestingly enough, this also looks like part of the solution for a fast motivator.

So because I'm patient with myself I end up being praised by people as I ended up being more successful than those around me. I just take time when it comes to learning bc I feel like I need a full understanding. When it comes to homework though I kinda suck bc I procrastinate a lot. A lot of the time when I feel liked doing homework its late at night, and then my parents get mad and take my stuff away to make me sleep.

For the ADHD wind motivation, how can you predict what will excite and motivate you? Sometimes just the fact that something is scheduled already makes it more boring and therefore cannot excite me to start working on it. 😔 But when the same task just pops into my head unplanned, I find it exciting.

    • @boogiemanbumblebee
      @boogiemanbumblebee Рік тому +17

I feel this so much, I have ADHD and am definitely wind type and this is exactly what happens to me.
What I tried doing was "underselling" my goals. So, I didn't give myself a real deadline. Instead of saying, "I'm going to write one thousand words by Friday", I said, "I'll write at LEAST one thousand words sometime this week". If I only wrote one thousand over the week, I met my minimum, and that was fine. However, I found myself hitting that minimum and going over it by a landslide almost right away. It kept climbing until I was writing around twelve thousand words a day. I've found that sometimes, especially for ADHD, simply changing the wording of a goal, changing the language, tricks your brain into accepting it so much more.
      I hope this helps you!

One important realization of mine was start assuming your body & mind like a COMPANY where you are the manager. If you start thinking like that, most of us realize we are running it like shit.
With this mindset I started making daily and monthly "meetings" where I make monthly recaps and assess goals, ups and downs, strategies for the next week/month.
It's changes the perspective on yourself. Because I always think that I'm in control but most of the time my employees are doing the work without my knowledge and consent.

I really needed to hear this. My whole life from 8th grade to now, freshman year of college, has been filled with anxiety about my motivation and my success in life. I made the admittedly naïve decision in middle school to be an indie video game developer, obviously not having really tried it or determined whether it was the right career for me. For years, I tried over and over again to make complete video games, always falling short only about a week or two into the process. I thought maybe it was that my scope was too high, or that I was incapable of pursuing that career because my ADHD refused to let me focus on anything for longer than 45 seconds. I kept focusing on video games, trying so hard to be a Pitta and be driven with one thing, but it kept falling through.
I realize now that I have so much more capability than I originally thought. Recently I've been coming to a better understanding of my condition, knowing that I needed to use my ADHD to my advantage, but not really knowing how. My focus has moved away from video games and more toward music, so I thought that maybe being a music teacher or possibly aiming high and becoming a professional musician would be better for me, as I tend to focus much more on those kinds of things than others. But, this has made me realize that I should be putting all of my eggs into multiple baskets, not just one.
    Liked and subbed :)

Thank for putting this up. I think there's something important to add to this. While these personality types are the dominant ones within us, I believe we have blends of each. Yes, there are people who are near 100% of one type with classic textbook mindset and behavior for that type. But I suspect most of us are heterogenous in our personalities, and so should be aware of those other personality types and their traits within us.
In general, I agree with Dr. K's explanation of the 3 personality types, and how we identify the dominant ones within us to fit the motivational / work styles that flow with their specific personality types. Again, thanks for putting this up.

My energy is also completely shot after 3pm, I work super early in the day.
