I sent you guys a message the other day. Looking for some help with editing video. Before anyone makes comments about how terrible the circus and freak show was, remember that there was no support system for disabled or handicapped people until the last quarter of the 20th century. This was their best chance at a normal life and many of them lived very well.
Yes, I've heard this said in several documentaries. Even Barnum's people were well paid and led comfortable lives. Too bad all the "good religious people" haven't always followed suit.
It's incredible to see the harsh reality for people born with disabilities in the 20th century. The most beautiful thing is schlitzie was such a lovely character that his circus became his family and friends! I'm happy knowing he got to feel what it's like to have others love & care for you no matter what the circumstances maybe, the world is a cold and lonely place sometimes. Rest in Paradise schlitzie 🙏❤️✌️

Most people who had any kind of major cognitive disability ended up in overcrowded, abusive institutions during the 19th and much of the 20th century. Prison conditions were more favorable. Schlitzie ended up in a better support system than most for the time period. And he deserves to be remembered in a favorable light. Great video!
This is so crucial... I mean aren't parents supposed to love their child? I know, he had disabilities, he was different from the others, but doesn't this make them love him even more? Doesn't this made them feel sad about him? Didn't they got sad when the thought of how people would treat their own child if he goes to the circus crossed their mind? For the time he probably had the best life one with his disability could get. He was well looked after and cared for, and in fact he was very happy performing for people, becoming depressed when he couldn't for periods of time. Rember back then there was no sort of state assistance. He lived a happy life well taken care of in a time that didnt care for the disabled. That's not a sad life in my book.

Ripley believe or not bring me here
he looked adorable tho:(
Wasn’t he in Plan 9?
That’s a sad life
For the time he probably had the best life one with his disability could get. He was well looked after and cared for, and in fact he was very happy performing for people, becoming depressed when he couldn't for periods of time. Rember back then there was no sort of state assistance. He lived a happy life well taken care of in a time that didnt care for the disabled. That's not a sad life in my book.
For the past 15-20 years, the lives for people with mental disabilities is much better than it ever been. They are leading such productive happier lives living with their biological or foster families. I make a living working with people like Schlitzie and enjoy it a lot. So much fun.
Cool guy
Rip my man u life well lived
The sad thing is you make it sound like he was used. He used you. He made a good living that he wouldn't have made without the sideshow. The sideshow's made a good living for many who would have languished and died in asylums.
Good living? That is perspective, not fact.
@@masonreigns7339 many side show workers made very good livings that they wouldn't have made locked away in asylums. Read a bit of history. Your revisionist crap is annoying. If these people weren't working and seeing the world, they would have been locked away in asylums enduring a hellish existence.
@@ericwarner3150 you speak to your understanding of a good living. I don't need to read history to understand the present information, all I need is my own senses. There is an obvious difference between this person and what could be considered the average side show worker. The fact that he was taken care of like a pet and shipped between shows and performances like a living stage prop is a big difference between the dwarves and bearded women.
@@masonreigns7339 he wasn't shipped like a stage prop. He was probably smarter than you. This is where reading is your friend. Don't go through life being an idiot. You got worked by a person smarter than you. He saw the world and made more money than you do. But you would rather him to be locked up being tortured in an asylum. Good on ya. Moron.
@@ericwarner3150 all those insults don't make you right,or intelligent,in fact it shows you like to be condescending and that shows weakness. You're the idiot if you think life was fair or good for this person,I would seek to insult you as well but what's the use, your mother is so much more interesting to play with. Talk to you later ,son.
