And that she saying she's not strong enough Cause it show that she doesn't want to fail or fall down on her knees You can hear the tone of voice her voice that she doesn't want to fall down
She takes care of her and immediately blocks her from any threat. Even the "keep Going" feels like it's advice for maribel. The rest of the song is catharsis but that moment is for her sister.
I am the oldest sister and this song gets me every single time and brings me to tears. It's sad to see how families put a lot of burden and expectations into a brand new little life. That is why many of us, the oldest siblings out there have in common feeling unheard, not validated, unseen, as if you were going to solve all the family issues yet you have in your power to work on this, transform it, and let it go to prevent passing, as much as you can, to next generations. Personally, this song and let it go from Frozen are two really powerful songs with great lyrics.
I genuinely loved that so many of the things asked of Luisa were so trivial, but since her strength comes from magic she is under the family pressure to “earn” her miracle. The townspeople should have easily been able to round up all their own donkeys, but nope, have the strong girl do it. It made the ending so much more powerful when the rest of the town came to rebuild - magic made their lives easier, but the Madrigals are more than the sim of their gifts and don’t need them to find fulfillment. Edit: my bad on the name, y’all. Autocorrect is a bitch
The short, happy break before the main chorus comes back is genuinely depressing. It represents that indescribable feeling so well. You get a moment to rest, only to immediately be put back under stress again. You're so used to it by that point that you don't even feel anything but an "ok..." anymore.
This song is absolutely brilliant in that it takes a character that could be a 1-dimensional, the super physically strong character and then gave her an insane amount of depth in a single song.
"Give it to your sister it doesn't hurt and see if she can handle every family burden" and " I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" are the lines that absolutely slay me
I totally thought that was going to be the big reveal in the movie haha. I thought the grandma interrupting the opening song with a confused expression was a hint in that direction and then how no one sings or dances unless Mirabell is in the scene with them.
@@FallenAngelKystre honestly if her gift was hidden and was just her visualising music videos like she’s in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist it would’ve made sense
@@ko7577 ?? thats not what the line meant at all ?? it states that every burden that the family carries was being carried by the eldest, not that the family is burden itself. how did u manage to completely change the message . if there r financial problems , THATS the burden to the family
@@ko7577 Disney is NOT saying family itself is a burden, it is the things that happen in a family that are burdensome NOT that family itself is burden, how slow are you?
"Under the surface, was Hercules ever like 'yo I don't wanna fight Cerberus'" This line has a major effect in my opinion cause its an entertaining and deep metaphor about having huge things expected of you with no regard over whether its what you want
And the thing is? Hercules almost certainly didn’t want to fight Cerberus. The only reason he set out to do the Herculean Tasks he became so famous for is cuz the Greek gods had Hercules suffer years of servitude at the hands of some dipshit king who wanted Hercules to fail.
The last clip where she literally has the entire weight of the WHOLE town on her shoulders! Such a powerful song. Really makes you think about your own family and the roles people have.
She compares herself to Hercules but the song keeps comparing her to another figure. Atlas. Weight of the world literally on her shoulders in several segments of the song.
as an eldest sibling here, I remember trying not to cry here since my sister and brother are watching Encanto with me so I don't want to show them that I'm being affected by this song since I don't want to put guilt on them, I especially relate to the lyrics "give it to your sister, your sister's stronger" we're always expected to be the strong one, I remember how my aunt told me in the hospital that I can't cry or breakdown infront of my dad or my siblings even tho I'm literally dying inside when my mom died. it hurts how my mom was already buried but I still couldn't cry and only brokedown when I no longer can't hold it, I cried on my friend's shoulder in a school toilet when I returned after missing months of class because I got told that I might need to repeat my whole school year (fortunately my History teacher helped me reaching out to my other subject teachers)
Hope you are hanging in there, I'm sorry you have gone through so much and just hope you are feeling like you can cry / talk when you want and need to.
a know it’s probably obvious but the visuals and idea of physical “pressure” are amazing representations of what mental pressure really feels like. This song and Luisa’s whole character profile is so relatable and I think that’s why everyone loves this song so much. It’s so common to feel this pressure and the physical representations of it really get the point across.
I know it’s so precious, even while telling her how hurt she is she can’t ever stop (in her eyes, and because of Abuelas influence) she’s still helping while being vulnerable. The hug at the end was so precious, my favorite part in the movie tbh.
And when Mira looks uncomfortable or scared by Luisa’s strength and the burden she’s carrying, that’s when Luisa starts dancing. Even though she’s still singing about her burdens and struggles, she’s doing a fun dance as if to show Mirabel “see, it’s okay. We’re having fun” even though the fun part is all on the outside. It’s just for show to make Mirabel feel better.
2:33 I love that during this whole part Mirabel really sees past everything and has a connection with her sister. You can see in her face how devastated she is to see her sister under so much weight. But then Luisa breaks into dance and makes it fun again as not to worry Mirabel because this whole time she's been protecting her both physically and emotionally.
I don’t now if anyone’s said this, but I LOVE the animation during the musical numbers. It’s just buttery smooth, and I love the visual language that shows how she’s buckling under the pressure on the inside, while the lyrics are mostly her trying to keep things together on the outside.
As the eldest and "responsible one", who always seems to be running around putting out fires and is first to be looked to for solutions to problems, this hit hard.
I'm the eldest, not just of my parents but of the whole generation for my family, I was expected to be responsible. This song is like everything I felt all in that short number
@@M_Noeli Actually, middle children have it the hardest and later on in life have the most trouble. The oldest is usually held up as an example to them and viewed as more of a "golden child."
@@ko7577 it varies between families who's treated lesser, my family, my mom used to abuse my youngest brother the most thank goodness we are out of that house now 🙏🏻
I absolutely LOVE the detail of the final 'domino' Luisa is struggling to hold up is her own door, showcasing the tremendous weight of it and how hard it is to carry the responsibility of having one of the strongest gifts in her family. Feeling the need to protect everyone because of it, especially her younger sister Mirabel. She may be able to move mountains and churches but nothing is heavier than the burden of having your beloved town and family rest on your shoulders.
Similar I like the scene from 2:30 on! Red for danger as the pressure piles on with the saddness and fear on her, blue for safety as she protects them all as she is confident and unwavering. It really shows how she is feeling compared to what she shows and does.
@@nightbane2889 Adding on to this: the blue there representing safety is ironic, as the blue appears with their house, and that's what nearly puts her under, more than any of the other things she lifts. It shows even more so that while she protects her family from danger, the biggest danger to her is them, and the pressure they place on her. I know that's what the entire song's about, but they show tell it again, all of it, right there with the colors and house.
“Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under” hits me every time. This song alone got me to watch this movie.
Same, I heard this song first on Facebook, I watched the movie immediately after watching the song. I love her character, she is incredibly relatable. All of them are relatable in one form or another.
That line immediately reminded me of the family funerals we've been to where my grief took a back seat so I could be there for my brothers. I'm not physically strong at all, but I'm definitely the one who can put aside my own issues to get things done. And ik that when my parents die (hopefully in the long distant future), it'll be the same way.
Oddly enough, i appreciate this song more as a younger sibling. It genuinely reminds me of my older siblings about the pressure they feel as the oldest and the ones who have the weight of our parents' expectations on them constantly. How often they protected the younger siblings from feeling such things
Love how this song reaches out to so many people, especially older siblings as you’re expected to take care of your younger siblings when you’re parents aren’t around while also needing to deal with school and a job in some cases. It feels like too much and as if a single mistake will ruin everything so you push yourself into a situation where you feel as if you’re carrying your family on your back
The line "Was Hercules ever like 'Yo I dont wanna fight Cerberus'" is severely underrated in my opinion because this line equates the duty/responsibility that was expected of Hercules to the duties/responsibilities Luisa just assumes
I think eis more like be stronger dont make you more fearless... Luisa is the only one she can fight any danger even if she is to scared for doing so, is you do or you do... She can have fear or anything.
There were tons of examples they could have gone for there. They picked a great one, because it frames her mindset perfectly. The absurd level or thought that went into this film is a huge part of what makes it so good.
Hercules had to do "labors" that he probably didn't want to do, for the faults of another (Hera). Luisa has so much pressure from her abuela to do all these things she doesn't want to do too. Some from the movie being rerouting rivers, fixing leaning houses, rounding up donkeys and carrying them on her back, etc. She's the only one you see through the movie constantly working, even when she loses her gift. It isn't assumed, it's laid out clear as day.
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks, no mistakes" and "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under" both those lines and how they were delivered were simply phenomenal.
"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." And "Give it to your sister it doesn't hurt and see if she can handle every family burden." Hit me in the chest watching this. The pressure of always being the strong one and carrying the weight of everything is such a universal experience, but we all seem to have different pieces that specifically resonate with each of us. Another masterpiece by Lin Manual Miranda and what a phenomenal big screen debut for Jessica Farrow. Was shocked when she didn't have any other discography listed.
I agree it does hit, especially to me being the oldest cousin and siblings of both sides of the family... the kiddos look up to me to much and the adults have a lot of expectations on me as well... mate im only 15-
I like how further into the song she seems more confident or happier because all that worry she had,she was able to talk it out and feel relieved to get it out of her chest
I love how during the song, even though Luisa is letting out her insecurity and stress of being the strongest one in the family, she still keeps Mirabel safe. Its quite cute and its genuinely sweet to see. Despite her being tired and stressed and everything, she doesnt take it out on Mirabel. She saves her from danger with her strength, aka what shes stressed and what shes pressured about, which I find genuienly heart wrenching. Its bittersweet...and i love it Oh, not to mention how despite her brute strength, she's gentle to Mirabel, like how she carefully adjusts her glasses.
To me, the best part is that Mirabel isn’t ever afraid of Luisa. She shows confusion and concern when Luisa starts freaking out, but Luisa is never treated as a freak or monster. Instead, Mirabel clings to her sister for comfort and protection. I love it
at the beginning I think she was a little scared but as the song goes on she relates to her and stops being afraid. Luisa is probably the nicest to Mirabel in the family for example luisa said “watch out sis” instead of isabela’s “stop being in the way sis”
@sugarush magnolia 🌸 Sort of... being overly emotional is seen as a negative as far as the movie is concerned (The most emotional character in the movie is considered a total joke that isn't worth considering and the movie never stops relentlessly tormenting her), and a lot of the movie seems to deem controlling one's emotions as the positive, but not to the point of denial. . The main reason why the movie doesn't treat emotion as the enemy is because the movie is an "internal" battle, not an external one (not even an externalized battle). An external battle tends favor rising above your emotions. A internal battle tends to favor becoming one with your emotions.
Everyone is understandably in awe of her appearance, being feminine with big muscles, but what stood out to me was her voice. Having a character with a deep voice that is still celebrated in song and isn't at any point the butt of the joke is so rare, I love it so much.
Yeah me too! Her voice was the first that took my attention and that made me come back to listen the song again and again. I also love the glotal stop when she says moun'ains. Strong, buff, but still feminine. I love Luisa too. I loved the endscene where she's slung in a hammock and offered a drink, like "Here girl, you damn well deserved this. Enjoy."
As a deep voiced woman this stood out so much. Alto women are the villains or the old maids. Not the reliable, beloved sibling. My whole life I've had one Disney song that wasn't a guys part I could sing and it was Ursula who was based on a drag queen. That's what people think of my deep voice. There are a handful of songs by some of the mezzo-soprano princesses that I can sing, but those are few and far between and often have a high note that kills it. But here's a true alto song by a character who's not elderly and not evil.
Even moreso, when she sings about her confidence, her voice is deep. When she's singing about her dreams and fears, it's higher. So confidence is shown as deep, anxiety as high.
I think, historically, people have pigeonholed female vocal ranges . It took a long time to recognize the value of black gospel song styles that defy the "rules" of mainstream vocal training. This and Lego Movie 2's Not Evil (Tiffany Haddish) both push the limits, being great songs with female vocalists that don't have the "standard female vocal" delivery.
This is one of the most powerful songs to come out of a Disney film, to me. It chokes me up- there's so much to take in and ur given slight relief before made to essentially bottle it back up, and my heart goes out to the many people experiencing that same generational trauma.
1940s generational trauma: World War II and 50 million deaths worldwide 1950s generational trauma: Vietnam war 1960s generational trauma: race riots, segregation, Vietnam 1970s generational trauma: Rolling blackouts, high crime rate, Vietnam 1980s generational trauma: The worst inflation in the country's history and the financial death of the working class 1990s generational trauma: Race riots, terrorism, high crime rate 2000s generational trauma: 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq wars, recession 2010s generational trauma: COVID-19 2020s generational trauma: Helping little sister with math, being asked to do dishes, and "responsibility that cuts into Fortnite time"
When she looks at Mirabel, her face usually gets softer, and it hardens when she faces threats or things she needs to carry. I love how it adds to the song and how she makes herself look brave and tough towards everything, but can show how she feels to her sister.
I also love how as she's singing you HEAR where she's human, normal voice instead of the grough (gruff + rough) voice she normally uses. And when it cracks right before the song, showing where she's the person inside rather than this invincible persona she normally has
I love how in almost every shot pretty much she was protecting her little sister. Really pushing home how much she is there for her family "in service" to them as her only purpose, and that scene where she's holding her over the steep cliff and it cracks translates to me that doing that is breaking her, constantly dragging her down to save everyone, to hold them up. Pressure in other words. Its a really good song made better with good visuals.
Personally, I think the reason we see that Luisa is constantly protecting Mirabel in this song is because she never wants her to feel how Luisa thinks shed feel without her gift (worthless). The difference between Luisas relationship with Mirabel and Isas relationship with Mirabel is really cool to see. Luise clearly loves Mirabel so much and wants to her/protect her, whereas Isa sees Mirabel as "getting off easy". She doesnt have a gift, so Isa sees that as he not having to provide anything for the town or family. This movie is so good.
And just to add, you have to think for everything Luisa is going through (the idea she's only useful for what she can provide) she can relate to that "worthless" feeling; her strength isn't really "hers" but for the benefit of everyone around her. There's a kindred spirit there, and being the older sibling, a protective instinct (obviously.) So, so much depth. And as the younger siblings myself, I can see Luisa in my sister a bit: stronger than she ever should have had to be. ❤
@Ban this youtube YES! I feel much like that. I feel like I can never show my brother that I am weak, even though he already knows that, but I feel that he feels that double. Because though he is the "baby" of the family, he is the strongest (mentally, and emotionally) and he doesn't want us to see him in his weakness, and he is condoling us and giving therapy!
Now that you mention it, Isa didn't care if Mirabel got smacked around in the early part of her song lol. The more you think about this movie, the better it gets
Ya know it’s probably obvious but the visuals and idea of physical “pressure” are amazing representations of what mental pressure really feels like. This song and Luisa’s whole character profile is so relatable and I think that’s why everyone loves this song so much. It’s so common to feel this pressure and the physical representations of it really get the point across.
Yes! I also love how, even tho it's her song and we are seeing *her* internal struggles, she still puts Mirabel as a priority in every step and tries to keep her safe, for she's protecting her not only from physical harm but also from her mental burdens
"Give it to your sister and never Wonder, if the same pressure would pull you under???" This is my favorite line 🥺🥺🥺🥺 as a man I feel this way about my younger siblings I'd rather go through the pain so that they don't have to and they know that they can always give it to me and I'll help ❤
The moment at 2:43 absolutely wrenches my gut every single time. “Give it to your sister, it doesn’t hurt. And see if she can handle every family burden” as you can see the tears she’s holding back while the crushing weight of the boulders emphasize the crushing weight of expectation that she’s been holding back. It’s not only extremely gut-punching, but just purely an extremely relatable feeling and it just… wow
It's the ending for me 3:05 when she says "Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under". Abuela especially never allowed her to be vulnerable.
Especially how gently she places her away from harm, regardless of how imminent the danger is. Without question, almost as if it were muscle memory, she puts herself in-between her sister and harm.
As the oldest sister, that had to deal with depression and the damage my parents inflicted to the Psyche of me and my sisters. This is the story of my life
As the oldest brother (30 yo) , I have a younger brother (25) and a pre teen sister. This song hit home, specially the “I’m pretty sure I’m worthless, if I can’t be of service.” with parents who do not speak English, and having to learn everything on my own. On a funny note… that eye twitch is so real 😂 specially when stress hits
Can we just talk about how emotional the part where everything falling on her is and how worried Maribel is but she knows it’s not something she could do. It just hits so hard 😩
Throughout the song, she is protecting Mirabel from everything still. She’s still smiling, still fighting, still protecting the whole time. Also, she says “a light wind blows,” but it is a tornado. Showing how much she withstands. I also like how they show “the weight of the world” on her, and how she catches everything to protect Mirabel and the donkeys (which is a good name for her family lol)
The fact that this movie isn't so shy about showing the problems of seemingly perfect characters since it's a kid's movie is the very reason why so many people love Encanto. I hope Disney keeps making more characters like this
As a trainee therapist I can approve from this movie, loiuse is always thinking she needs be strong for her family, but deep down underneath the surface she has a weak side that she scared to show her family or everyone. And bruno is someone wandering in theor negative mind
This whole song is nothing but bars. And great message of how many deal with struggles and keep going. two of my favorite bars is : "Diamonds and Platinum, I find'em and flatten'em. and Pressure's like a drip drip drip that'll never stop. Whoa! Pressure that'll tip tip tip til you ready to pop! Luissa killed this..man
the beautiful face expressions when shes taking on the rocks and then the house. the fear in her eyes as she looks at her sister, asking for help, but then she realizes she has to handle it herself- so she looks away. its fucking beautiful..
I don't think it's her asking for help. It's her realizing the fallout if she isn't strong enough, i.e. her sister's demise. She can't stop because her family depends on her. So she's able to find the strength to do what she's always done.
@@incaseofamnesia6380 Honestly, I tear up at this spot every time. Like the anxiety and weight she has to carry, and the fear of the fallout. Ugh! Such a real thing!
Everyone’s talking about “we don’t talk about Bruno” but I like this song it’s pretty good. Props to Jessica Darrow her vocals are insane. Was gonna skip this movie but I’m so glad I watched it. I hope they make a Disney+ series for the other characters. Also fun fact you might not have noticed the ship says madrigal.
"This growing pressure keeps growing, keep going." I love this sentence, both in its meaning, and Jessica's own voice. And the dance moves throughout the songs, are amazing. The fact that they were done by real dancers as a model.
I agree!! The body language is amazing as well! Facial expressions and body language are most important parts of communication so it's amazing to see it done so well in animation. Makes them seem way more realistic!
This movie is a masterclass on cloth simulation. The way all the dresses flow. The shirts rincle and stretch. I can not get over the fabrics in this movie.
I love the small details here, when Luisa is all alone, the house crushes her for a second, but when Mirabel is under, she manages to carry all of it. I would love to know more about the relationship Mirabel has with her sisters, and maybe even her cousins.
You could kinda see it in the film: Isabella thinks Mirabel is always in the way but allows her to be herself Luisa doesn't wanna be a burden on her Antonio is like the brother she never had Dolores is the one who knows ALL the tea Camilo is more of a jokester
Technically Mirabel wasn't given a gift but she was like the carrier of the Encanto because of her family values. She made the house come back to life, she basically predicted Antonio's gift, she wanted to make her grandma proud, as she learned more about all her family members she no longer only worked to fix the magic but promised them all a better life once it was all solved, making Bruno come back, Luisa take a break, Isabella be herself and not marry who she doesn't want, hook up Dolores with who she thought she'd never end up with
I genuinely loved that so many of the things asked of Luisa were so trivial, but since her strength comes from magic she is under the family pressure to “earn” her miracle.
She's tough and strong but she loves her family and protects them. She always nice to her sisters and when someone asks her something to do she replies so sweet. I want more of her!!

While I was never in this kind of “situation” with so much active watchful pressure on everything I do, I had an abusive step-mom when I was about 5-6 years old who completely ruined my sense of self-worth and confidence and I can still relate to some parts of the song, especially “I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service”. 2:43 might be my favorite part though.
I love how, even though Luisa is struggling with all of her pressure, she still, through the song, cares for Mirabel. Always catching the rocks before they fall, standing in front of the boulders, stopping to adjust her glasses, etc. It just shows her character and how good of a sister she is.
Luisa’s face is just so impeccable throughout this song, it moves so seamlessly from brimming confidence to harrowing anxiety and back again - just watch her face, it’s sooo good!
I think its sad she says, "I glow cause I know what my worth is", just shows how bad things are in the encanto that her abuela tells her the worth of her gift
Let's be honest, this song hits hard for every older sibling but there's a very crucial part of the animation that needs to be talked about. When the final chorus starts, you can see Luisa afraid while holding the falling rocks. It's such a powerful and scary thing that perfectly enhances the weight of the lyrics. Edit: so I'm seeing a lot of people talking about middle siblings and stuff. I'd like to clarify. "Older sibling" does not mean OLDEST sibling. I'm not the oldest, I'm the second of four. I was the middle child for 8 years. For those of you who would like attention for middle or even youngest children.
I'm not the older sibling but my sister left the house because my mom just gives everything to another person and blames them for everything. I always get blamed I'm never off duty she tells me one thing I do it but she claims she said something else or I messed up. To her I am never good enough. She does things that she says I'm never allowed to do
For me it hits for the message of wanting to carry my family under my shoulders even though I am the youngest sibling in my family at age 17 that will be going to college soon. I am always watching over my older siblings and helping them out with their task for I am the tallest member of my family so I can naturally help reach places that they cant reach naturally, as well my family is putting all their fate in me to accomplish my goal of becoming a RN and the first member of the family to get a job in the medical field and hopefully later on a anesthesiologist. All of these of mind are to help people but to also help my family by getting a good job to help make a brighter future for our family.
I love that this song isn't just about her being physically strong, but apparently the family has been placing every burden and problem directly on her shoulder to the point that she feels obligated to handle all of it, not just physically but emotionally too.
@@TrueWizardry Abuela isn't being intentionally malicious. She does genuinely care for her family, but like many older people in the real world who grew up during tough times, that fear of losing everything you built and returning to those "dark days" can cloud your judgement and perspective. A simple but common example being how a grandmother who lived off of very little food growing up having the tendency to fatten up her grand children whenever they visit. Their deep rooted fear of not having enough food to go around can spur them to keep overfeeding their grand kids as an understandable, but unhealthy expression of love.
That’s exactly how it is for me I pushed myself too far I tried to take in all of my loved ones problems because I’m a man… I’m supposed to do that, right? Well I guess not because now I’m a complete wreck… lol I remember when I was an extreme nationalist I used to compare it to France vs the US mentality of “NEVER SURRENDER” and “I SURRENDER” well, I guess I’m the French because I surrender.
@@TrueWizardry From my perspective the issue with Abuela is that she's so obsessed with this positive opinion people have of her perfect and superpowered family that she puts the needs of the people above the needs of any individual. She doesn't even see her family as people anymore, but as powers and services that they can provide. If you notice their powers have very little to do with what they're expected to do for the town, at least with Luisa and her sisters. The oldest daughter can make plants at will. She can solve world hunger with a flick of her finger and all Abuela sees her as is a flower maker and someone pretty to marry off so that she can have great grandkids at some point. Luisa is super strong and super durable so she literally functions as a work horse for everyone in town even stuff that they could be doing for themselves. And because the main character is powerless she's seen as a burden and not even part of the family. Abuela didn't even bother having a room for her made the hard way because her powers didn't manifest in a way that gave her one magically. The way the village views her family is so important to her that when a door opening happens she invites the entire village and has this massive speech about using their gifts to benefit the the people of the village. Abuela is just horrible and that horrible-ness eventually destroys the the house which is used symbolically to represent the family. As you can see in Luisa's song the heaviest thing that nearly crushes her is the house specifically which as I stated is symbolic of the family.
@@J-manli Intentionally or unintentionally malicious she's still despicable as a person. We can view this by looking at the powers themselves and how they function. On Luisa's side of the family her mother and sisters all have powers based on servicing people. the mother heals people with her cooking, the older sister can grow plants for beautification (though her major contribution to the family according to Abuela is that she's beautiful and easy to marry off, not her power). Luisa is a literal work horse for everyone else in the town (which is why they place her alonside donkeys which are also "beasts of burden"). And of course the main character has no power and is therefore seen as useless. Then you have Antonio's side of the family. All of which are specifically dedicated to gathering information which allows Abuela to remain in control over the village. Shapeshifting, super hearing, talking to animals, and of course the mother's near random weather powers based on emotions. Then you have Bruno. His power was to tell the future, but he usually foresees disasters or negative events, he doesn't change the future or control anything, he just sees what's going to happen and even that's usually just a possibility. This isn't something that Abuela can market off of so she ends up shunning him and treating him badly because he doesn't benefit her directly. That makes Abuela a straight up villain, she might not be as obvious as other Disney villains, but she's manipulative and horrible.
One of the most telling things is that even while she’s singing about struggling to be good enough, in the clip she’s still only focused on protecting Mirabel (from falling things and such) I know it isn’t a part of what actually happens in the story, but it shows just how dedicated she is to her family.
I love how every scenario shows Luisa still protecting Maribel, pulling her out of harms way or getting rid of the threat entirely, but as soon as Maribel isn’t in danger (when the house falls on top of her) does she let the pressure crush her but only for a moment, and as soon as Maribel is in harms way again (when the whole town falls on her shoulders) even though it’s clearly crushing her she doesn’t let anything happen to her baby sister. The visuals to this song are absolutely stunning
exactly i noticed that too- like even as she's singing about the huge pressure of being the older sister and protecting Mirabel, it's still clear that she's fiercely protective and will keep Mirabel out of danger no matter what. it's so beautiful
"Give her all the heavy things, we can't shoulder" "Give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would have pulled you under"...you can really see in this song, and also especially these lines, that she has the most pressure to carry than the family, but she needs to stay strong because everybody expects that from her....This is my favorite disney song, because it really shows the flaws of being the oldest of the family and still needs to be perfect, or the family would break
not to be rude, but not all older children have all the responsibilities and stuff. the oldest isnt the care holder of the family, ur only saying that bc ur the oldest..my brother is the oldest and all he has to do is game all day, and the family wont break because of you u arent the boss the parents are 💀
I get that's it's not true for you, but that comment was a bit rude. It's true for them and a lot of other people and generally the oldest does end up with a lot more responsibility, even if you don't always see it. And there are a lot of people with absent parents or who have to take on more pressure even if their parents are there just because of personal things
@@luvemrie LMM said he wrote this song with his older sister in mind, because she had to take on the burden of being a third parent for him when his parents were busy or unable to be around. So, you know, it is specifically speaking from the perspective of an older sibling.
i like how at 2:23 luisa says how the pressure grows larger and larger, while she’s smiling. it feels like she know how much stress and hard work, plus the heavy things she carries, while trying to pretend she’s totally fine, put on a fake smile and do your work. while all this ‘paradise’ in the next lyric, the background is all red, and yet she is lifting boulders again. she is basically singing about how she pretends nothing is wrong and everything is okay, while she is scared something might hurt the family, she’s anxious, she feels worthless if she can’t fix everything, and about how even though her power can make her lift things people can’t, it’s not what she calls a ‘miracle’.
Honestly, I think that EVERY older sibling feels this way xD So much pressure to keep the family together, pressure to protect the siblings, etc. Take your pick
I love how this song not only talks about physical strength, but mental strength as well and constantly having to feel like you need to be strong on both ends of the spectrum.
From a composer’s perspective, the way all the family members have different genres/vibes to their songs is absolutely genius, especially the way they play with it in we don’t talk about Bruno
I love how this shows how hard family pressure is I hope mothers and fathers will see this song and think what there kinds are going through because they care
Love this song, as the young sibling it makes a person realise some things about your oldest sister. I also loved how the donkey were afraid then were dancing along near the end. 😂
I like how donkeys are everywhere in the song. Donkey do a lot of carrying and heavy lifting. They carry and carry and carry without getting tired for a long time. They are a literal symbolism of how louisa is being used as a pack mule by her family and the entire village. When the relaxation scene came on the donkeys have horns on them to portray that they are pretending to be unicorns. The donkeys want to be carefree and happy like unicorns because to the donkeys the unicorns don't have the trouble that they do. Louisa wants to relax and be like the 'unicorns'. She needs a break but doesn't want to lose her value and bonds by not being there to do things for others. So instead she begins taking on the weight of the world out of love for others and a feeling of obligation towards the encanto y la familia. She puts on a facade of being unbreakable (the three ringed circus) and always ok but the pressure and stress is slowly building up until she feels like she is going to pop (the guesser feild)
Unicorns could also represent how he doesnt see it as possible, like that kind of freedom would be fairytale levels of unachieveable for her on the position she is in
the whole song is meaningful and deeply touches the heart, the pain and everything thats under our mask. Luisa's face at the end. Seriously, broke my heart.
for me, it wasn't the ending face but the one at 2:36 that gets me- where she's looking at her sister as she's slowly losing her grip on the rocks piling on her. It's like her little moment of weakness before snapping out of it and putting on her strong face again as the friggin house falls on her.
Crazy id relate so hard but this is my sister after our mom died. I watched her take on everything until she basically broke Also unrelated but the animation on her shoulders and arms when she’s holding them out is so good, someone on the animation team really knew their anatomy
Although the song was about her power I still can relate to her, I’m the older sister. I move invisible mountains, churches, they give it to me because I’m the strongest. Who am I if I can’t carry my family burden?
I USED to fell like that, but them I realized nobody really cared, my siblings were even more independent than me, then I decided to live selfishly: I decide what I want to do and I measure my own worth, as the saying goes: “before you take care of others you have to be able to take care of yourself”
Same. I'm also an only child, and I constantly put others above myself and do everything I can to help other people because I think it's what I should do, and I only feel satisfied with myself and my actions if it's benefiting someone else and helping or making them happy.
as an only child I feel you. I make one tiny mistake my dad goes beserk and I get damaged emotionally. I wish they would inflict the pain physically cause that would heal. These things made me develop depression and sometimes I just dont eat. One day I got hurt really bad emotionally and i didnt eat. Skipped breakfast, skipped snack, skipped lunch and ate like a tiny portion when it was dinner. I just wish my parents would be happier and proud of me.
Dude that's when I completely lose it with tears! It just hits so hard, me being being the oldest and having Latin American roots.. Specially being first generation, the family expects so much..

Yeah I'm The oldest sibling in my family and I relate to most of the things she's singing
Me too except I am an only child and I still can relate
i’m the youngest and have 2 older brothers so in a way i can somewhat relate to all 3 sisters
Same I relate so much I cried the whole time.
Just a reminder here that Luisa is the middle child lol
I genuinely loved that so many of the things asked of Luisa were so trivial, but since her strength comes from magic she is under the family pressure to “earn” her miracle. The townspeople should have easily been able to round up all their own donkeys, but nope, have the strong girl do it. It made the ending so much more powerful when the rest of the town came to rebuild - magic made their lives easier, but the Madrigals are more than the sim of their gifts and don’t need them to find fulfillment.
Its like...the entire theme of the movie. They even spell it out in the end. Everyone is more than their abilities.

Mirabel's gift is to turn people's inner thoughts and emotions into fully choreographed music videos

I totally thought that was going to be the big reveal in the movie haha. I thought the grandma interrupting the opening song with a confused expression was a hint in that direction and then how no one sings or dances unless Mirabell is in the scene with them.

"Under the surface, was Hercules ever like 'yo I don't wanna fight Cerberus'"
This line has a major effect in my opinion cause its an entertaining and deep metaphor about having huge things expected of you with no regard over whether its what you want
It's a little clunky, but it works.
And still pick up the sword and shield and still be able defeating the Cerberus
And the thing is? Hercules almost certainly didn’t want to fight Cerberus. The only reason he set out to do the Herculean Tasks he became so famous for is cuz the Greek gods had Hercules suffer years of servitude at the hands of some dipshit king who wanted Hercules to fail.

For real I relate to her strugle my dad had multiple heart attacks when I was a kid and being the only boy I kinda got all the responsibility
as an eldest sibling here, I remember trying not to cry here since my sister and brother are watching Encanto with me so I don't want to show them that I'm being affected by this song since I don't want to put guilt on them, I especially relate to the lyrics "give it to your sister, your sister's stronger" we're always expected to be the strong one, I remember how my aunt told me in the hospital that I can't cry or breakdown infront of my dad or my siblings even tho I'm literally dying inside when my mom died. it hurts how my mom was already buried but I still couldn't cry and only brokedown when I no longer can't hold it, I cried on my friend's shoulder in a school toilet when I returned after missing months of class because I got told that I might need to repeat my whole school year (fortunately my History teacher helped me reaching out to my other subject teachers)
Hope you are hanging in there, I'm sorry you have gone through so much and just hope you are feeling like you can cry / talk when you want and need to.
I’m sorry for your loss, you are incredibly strong and I don’t think it’s wrong to show weakness you aunt isnt right and shouldn’t say that
a know it’s probably obvious but the visuals and idea of physical “pressure” are amazing representations of what mental pressure really feels like. @@fizzysooda4772 thx. Much appreciated! 😊
I truly believe that the house didn’t give Mirabel a gift because she didn’t need one: her innate empathy is the greatest gift to her family.

I don’t now if anyone’s said this, but I LOVE the animation during the musical numbers. It’s just buttery smooth, and I love the visual language that shows how she’s buckling under the pressure on the inside, while the lyrics are mostly her trying to keep things together on the outside.

Shut up
Hercules had to do "labors" that he probably didn't want to do, for the faults of another (Hera).
Its bittersweet...and i love it
Oh, not to mention how despite her brute strength, she's gentle to Mirabel, like how she carefully adjusts her glasses.

@@murrfeeling i mean over the years deeper male voices have been pushed out of the industry too, at least in terms of standalone music.
2:20 ''This growing pressure, keeps growing keep going, Cause all we know is'' Im so obsessed with that part😋
This is one of the most powerful songs to come out of a Disney film, to me. It chokes me up- there's so much to take in and ur given slight relief before made to essentially bottle it back up, and my heart goes out to the many people experiencing that same generational trauma.
1940s generational trauma: World War II and 50 million deaths worldwide
1950s generational trauma: Vietnam war
1960s generational trauma: race riots, segregation, Vietnam
1970s generational trauma: Rolling blackouts, high crime rate, Vietnam
1980s generational trauma: The worst inflation in the country's history and the financial death of the working class
1990s generational trauma: Race riots, terrorism, high crime rate
2000s generational trauma: 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq wars, recession
2010s generational trauma: COVID-19
2020s generational trauma: Helping little sister with math, being asked to do dishes, and "responsibility that cuts into Fortnite time"
When she looks at Mirabel, her face usually gets softer, and it hardens when she faces threats or things she needs to carry. I love how it adds to the song and how she makes herself look brave and tough towards everything, but can show how she feels to her sister.
Luisa may have incredible strength but she's still a human with emotions.
I also love how as she's singing you HEAR where she's human, normal voice instead of the grough (gruff + rough) voice she normally uses. And when it cracks right before the song, showing where she's the person inside rather than this invincible persona she normally has
Fr she’s probably one of the best big sisters in Disney history she really tries to be the best sister she can
Ll
The “No Pressure” at the end always brings me to tears disney is truly marvelous musically😢
That hit home
And just to add, you have to think for everything Luisa is going through (the idea she's only useful for what she can provide) she can relate to that "worthless" feeling; her strength isn't really "hers" but for the benefit of everyone around her. There's a kindred spirit there, and being the older sibling, a protective instinct (obviously.)
So, so much depth. And as the younger siblings myself, I can see Luisa in my sister a bit: stronger than she ever should have had to be. ❤
like Luisa, Isa is pressured to be perfect. And she sees Mirabel being free and easy to mess around because she has no gift and responsibility.

I don't think it's her asking for help. It's her realizing the fallout if she isn't strong enough, i.e. her sister's demise. She can't stop because her family depends on her. So she's able to find the strength to do what she's always done.

I love the small details here, when Luisa is all alone, the house crushes her for a second, but when Mirabel is under, she manages to carry all of it. I would love to know more about the relationship Mirabel has with her sisters, and maybe even her cousins.
You could kinda see it in the film:
Isabella thinks Mirabel is always in the way but allows her to be herself
Luisa doesn't wanna be a burden on her
Antonio is like the brother she never had
Dolores is the one who knows ALL the tea
Camilo is more of a jokester
@@ItIsOnlyJonathan Dolores isn’t really a gossip girl she has to keep EVERY secret to herself and she slipped one one that was very important
@@ItIsOnlyJonathan
Also Luisa is mostly civil with her. Not resentful or standoffish like Isabella. Camillo I'd also civil.
Technically Mirabel wasn't given a gift but she was like the carrier of the Encanto because of her family values. She made the house come back to life, she basically predicted Antonio's gift, she wanted to make her grandma proud, as she learned more about all her family members she no longer only worked to fix the magic but promised them all a better life once it was all solved, making Bruno come back, Luisa take a break, Isabella be herself and not marry who she doesn't want, hook up Dolores with who she thought she'd never end up with
I'm hoping Encanto gets a stage version or a TV show spinoff, so we can see more of everybody.
It's not only a really good beat. its deep meaning and the emotions too that makes it perfect. A lot of people can relat to it easily

Sometimes her voice even sounds like it’s going to crack with tears from the stress. So well done.
Yes!
I think its sad she says, "I glow cause I know what my worth is", just shows how bad things are in the encanto that her abuela tells her the worth of her gift
the way this is one of the thematically best songs Disney has ever made
Let's be honest, this song hits hard for every older sibling but there's a very crucial part of the animation that needs to be talked about.
>_>
2:33
Weight of the lyrics! It's heavy indeed. Good pun.
I love that this song isn't just about her being physically strong, but apparently the family has been placing every burden and problem directly on her shoulder to the point that she feels obligated to handle all of it, not just physically but emotionally too.
Dude... the Grandma is a terrible person, and realistically, these girls would grow up with an IMMENSE amount of trauma.
@@TrueWizardry
Abuela isn't being intentionally malicious.
