There is absolutely nothing cooler than the isle of man tt sidecar race. The trust they have in each other is insane. When you see a dude take a corner and the passenger just sticks his head out and they are 1mm away from the wall at 120 mph is crazy.
Here in The Philippines, we called it Tricycle. It is a public transport mainstay. It is usually a 100-175cc motorcycle attached to a roofed sidecar with artwork designs or just a plain shiny stainless steel.
In india, car manufacturing was artificially limited to 30-40 k cars a year by government restrictions,so people attached side cars to Enfields and lambretta scooters so that the whole family could travel together
Having owned a motorcycle sidecar outfit, I can recommend them for transporting children. This is because: (1) You cannot hear the children, in the sidecar, whinging. (2) If, for some reason, you can somehow hear the child whinging, simply remove the muffler from the motorcycle, which will drown out the annoying noise.
In the 1970s i had a stock 1950 Harley-Davidson Panhead with sidecar (plus reverse gear) that i used going to college during our snowy Wisconsin winters. It was a BLAST. But every spring i was always ready to remove the sidecar and ride solo again. Both are fun and have their place. 😂
I'm sorry you had to ride a Harley. No one should be subjected to that kind of torture. I know you had to convince yourself that it was enjoyable like some twisted form of Harley stockhome syndrome, but you're safe now. You dont have to endure that abuse anymore
Do you remember how high reverse gear was. I tried fully engaging the clutch in reverse on a 48 Pan with sidecar, my suggestion is don’t try it. I had the sidecar in the air in reverse and not on purpose. Scared the H out of me but managed to stop. Other than that “flying the chair” is fun!
@@oldamericaniron5767 Yes, reverse was geared rather high. You couldn't reverse fast backwards with much control. I only used it when necessary. No trick riding. But it was useful, even when the sidecar was off if you got stuck in the mud.
Another probably little known fact. In early America the rural roads being dirt would be quite difficult to navigate and although a Model T was cheaper to buy than a Harley with sidecar the Harley with sidecar was easier to get unstuck on muddy roads gaining them favor. Also early Harley sidecars had an adjustable sidecar wheel so you could move wheel out to match existing ruts in the road. I have ridden on dirt where width doesn’t match ruts in road and it is very difficult.
I have seen side car races on the Nürburgring and an offroad sidecar race. Im really Impressed by this style because its so much different to a normal motocycle race
In 1979, I took my wife and two kids on a 4 week camping trip covering the western U.S. and western Canada. Our vehicle was a BMW R75/5 with a Ural M66 sidecar. Two tents, four sleeping bags, ice chest, Coleman stove, clothes, fishing gear, etc. In 1997, I became the first person to complete the Iron Butt rally with a sidecar. Still piloting hacks to this day. Too bad more aren't on the roads in the country.
I had a 1970 Dnepr and sidecar built in a Ukranien factory in the former Soviet Union,it was heavy to ride and steer,I never had a passenger so cornering was gymnastic to say the least giving me a full upper body workout, you knew you'd been out riding by the way the arms ached afterwards.

I thought sidecars became popular because a young man could have a motorbike as his personal transport and then quickly add the sidecar when he got a wife. I suppose that's an over-simplification. Incidentally, the '90s S symbol' is very much older than the 1990s; Lemmino has a video on its history if anyone wants to know
That's right, especially in the UK, where it was a lot cheaper to keep the bike and add a sidecar than buy and insure a car, which would also require a car driving licence. This also led to the popularity, in the 50s and 60s, of 3-wheel cars, which were classed as motorcycles for licensing and taxation purposes, so could be driven without taking a car test, and had lower running costs, even if they did handle like a giraffe on roller skates.
They exist mainly to make a motorbike more car like in capability without costing as much as a car. Thats the reason for them in asia as well. Just a wheel, some steel and welding and boom now you can transport wife AND the kids.
Anyone else notice the American made trucks at 8:08? We sent a lot of supplies over there. I think these were Studebakers, made in South Bend, Indiana.
they exist because they allow you to carry a passenger while still being fast and light, in consideration of other oprions and you can use a machine gun
I can scarcely believe those sidecar racing passengers. The level of strength and fitness to hold those positions is up there with Olympic gymnasts, except they're doing it at 100 mph through bumps and vibrations and buffeting. And if they screw up instead of falling over and twisting an ankle they flip the bike.
i ride a late 80s dnepr 650, two wheel drive, reverse gear and all. i own and ride a few bikes but the dnepr is the most fun. constantly fighting to stay rubber-side down with a machine that wants to rattle itself to pieces is just something special.
As an owner of an Ural 750 with similar setup, I completely agree! I have spent weeks on end on every one of my bikes on the TET and I have to say that, even though much slower than my GS, Himalayan or KTM 1200, the sidecar has been the must fun offroad (especially due to 2WD and reverse)... being able to plow thtough mud when the others are stuck or drift at every turn on icy roads is magical!
Unless in Philippines or other countries that having side car is part of the public transportation (tricycle) motorcycle with sidecar is a hit or miss.
He did not mention the Bat-cycle from the original 1966 Batman TV series. In the first episodes, it was a 1959 Harley Davidson, and in later episodes a Yamaha Catalina.
Not all that elusive for me, every time I leave home under my own power it's on motorcycle with a sidecar. If anyone is considering getting one be prepared for numerous conversations with random passers by who want to look at the hack and rig discuss the vehicle or occasionally request a lift
I Agree, if you have to stop ANYWHERE, especially in urban areas, add at least 10-15 min of conversation, answering questions, taking pictures, ... with strangers that are just fascinated by your deathtrap on 3 wheels!
Sidecars are a very lucrative form of public transportation in many south east Asian countries. They transport hundreds of people on an 8-hour work day and is a very cheap way to go around places within a 30km radius.
Sidecars exist because motorcycles used to be cheaper than cars.. Also it's really fun to ride a sidecar. I prefer bikes to cars and my sidecar bike allows me to carry all kinds of shit with me if I need to..
Harley made a copy of the BMW for the American military to use in Africa during WW2 since the V twins had a hard time keeping the rear cyl cool and the shaft drive was more suited to operating in the sand. It seemed everyone was using the same bike.

Nowadays we can say that sidecars were just a jank stop gap to cars being too expensive, because if we look at it objectively, it's an idea that had no businesses becoming an actual thing.
Clearly never taken a British Car License training....I could be useful for a full bike license only that just wants a carry bike. British car training is hideously expensive.
my great uncle mick use to race sidecar at isle of man. He passed a few years ago and I missed the oprottunitty to buy his old race bike and have it shipped to the us from the uk. I was too poor :/ I do have one of his old racing helmets tho so thats pretty cool
You left out sidewinder sidecars which lent over with the motorcycle. Back in the 80s when I started riding it was a way of riding a large motorcycle with out taking a test
I liked side car or side hack on dirt bikes at motocross races in western WA in 1970s & 1980s. The guy on side hack balanced around & leaning to keep the bike from rolling. There was an old tv program from 1969, the Sidehackers dirt bikes with side hacks on a flat track it was about racing on flat tracks.

G'day Yammie, I have an old mate and his wife with a vast motorbike collection and they have 2 Royal Endfields with sidecars and take their grand kids out. Not for me, but I can see a time where they would been useful.
