- For years, fans have been asking to join Les on a Survivorman shoot. Finally, Les has agreed. From over 200 applicants, Joe McConnell was selected to join Les on what proves to be a very difficult and challenging survival expedition. Blind-sided by poor survival skills, Joe struggles to keep up as he and Les trek through thick forest terrain burdened by heavy camera gear, but with no food, no water and no shelter. Joe quickly learns that real life survival isn’t as easy as Les makes it look on TV.
Directed by: Les Stroud
Starring: Les Stroud, Joe McConnell
This has to be your next full season. Picking inexperienced people to come out and try to do what you do. I loved this episode because it showed how hard it actually is to survive
thats a great idea, maybe add a few precautions for the persons safety
The thing is though they had to intentionally pick someone completely clueless to make it. The guy didn't even know how to use a ferro rod for crying out loud. All that really does is give all the people with even a little practice a sense that actualy it isn't all that difficult with a little knowledge and practice.
Well so long as you gave someone your plan beforehand so that they would know something was wrong and to call for rescue is you didn't show up anyway given how short these tend to be.
@@TheAkashicTraveller that's actually what you should do any time you're going out like this. Tell people hey I'm gonna be hiking over here I should be back by this time or so. Then if you don't come back someone will know something isn't right, and where to tell rescuers to look.
I love these
I agree why does the survival man not have TV show in the midst of all this fake reality TV les was and is the real deal I miss it

Yeah baby!!! It's good!
Thank you Les for releasing the Survivorman series on UA-cam
THIS IS SO GOOD! I can tell why you picked Joe. It could have been anybody who was more prepared, but it wouldn't teach us the same, as watching a guy get completely thrown of his game and experiencing TRUE survival with no prep. Thank you Les and Joe for such great content!
Genius
So true
All things considered Joe is a damn champ. He stuck it out better than I wager most could, and he had the chemistry to be on camera and fit in with the show, even in the low low places he went to. It's hard to keep up with a world-class professional, and I think Joe performed absolutely admirably.
Agreed!
Definitely ! When he was sleeping next to the fire,he was so exhausted!he was snoring and out like a light lol he earned that rest!
well he got to cheat when he was given the giant bag of beef jerkey and then got to take 2 extra items than he was suppose to have. he already has a survival expert with him yet he has to have a huge bag of food and 4 times as many tools as people on naked and afraid are given just to make it a couple of nights. I really think most people could do better than that lol
@@Teh0nlyMessiaH I'm sure les would be willing to let you try it out 😉
Ok Joe in disguise, you did pretty well no need to defend yourself
The cable networks are all such idiots and pieces of crap for not bringing Survivorman back. Everyone that I’ve ever known that has actually watched Survivorman either thoroughly enjoyed the show, or, like myself, loved and obsessed over it. Les, I’m sure you’ll probably never see this, but please know that you have saved more lives than you will ever know; not just with your survival expertise, but also with the spectacular entertainment you’ve provided to some of us who are going through our darkest times. Truly, thank you for everything you do and have done, you are a TRUE legend... and whether it be on TV, UA-cam, or elsewhere, we will continue to watch and support you.
People don’t want real they want dramatized bologna.
I really like the teaching style of letting Joe make his own mistakes the first night, giving some tips and seeing how he implemented them the second night, and then setting up a camp with him on the third night to really drive home the lessons.
We can all chuckle at joe from our couch but, we all know we'd be just as lost. This was a great lesson and one I'm sure Joe won't ever forget.
The first scene with the striker was difficult to watch, but I have to give Joe credit: I think most people would've totally given up on it after breaking the rod, and slept in the cold & dark, but he kept trying, and eventually got it to work! He definitely has the right mental aptitude for success out there.
He got it to work AFTER Les told him to use the axe, and the he STILL did it wrong !
He's bald and yet he didn't even bring a hat ! lol
His fire is tiny and he can't even think to make it bigger to keep it going longer.
@@edwardfletcher7790 It's easy to criticize when you're not in his position.
Yeah, he didn't figure out he was doing something wrong and try to change what he was doing. The point of this episode is demonstrating the fact that it's not easy. You don't necessarily know what you're doing. If you make a mistake you don't necessarily know how to correct it. Surviving in the wild isn't a walk through the park.
@@DanteTorn The Guy doesn't have a survival mindset. His brain doesn't have the adversity or problem solver flexibility.
@@edwardfletcher7790 "He didn't even bring a hat ! lol" Yes he did? You can see him wearing it at 19:38. This is all easy for you to say, but the reality it you wouldn't last an hour by yourself in the woods. That camping trip you went on that one time with your dad when you were 7 doesn't count as real survival. You can drop the internet expert, tough guy routine.
@@jimbeam8338 I grew up in the woods you cretin. Our property backed on the edge of a national Park. Why else would I be so appalled by such a display of idiocy as in this video ?
Every new person could be a whole season worth of material. Bring a newbie into it, and shape em into being a survivor. I love the whole: Batman waiting in the wings to help his apprentice when they need it, but also lets them make their own mistakes theme. I already want another episode to see if he gets better.
Love that idea tbh
I like this idea of bringing out folks who don't know how to survive. We can truly see what the difference looks like between Les and the common person.
@@chronicawareness9986 There are plenty of stories where people have lost their packs and are left with mininal gear. Sure choosing two items isn't realistic, but losing your pack is.
Most people would say in a apocalyptic situation they would feel most safe in a bunker, in a military base, maybe even their own home. But for me if I could have the guidance of Les in a apocalypse, I’d be confident I would outlast the people that choose those safer options
Going in with no wilderness experience at all, he probably was expecting a chill camping trip with Les. He thought he was prepared for it... until Les took all his gear lmao This guy for sure didn't watch enough surviverman to be doing this
lmao I was surprised as the episode went on! That's hardcore.
To be honest they probably chose someone with seemingly little to no experience in order to create more teachable moments.
@@TheLastOldOne To be fair though, Les really didn't teach much lol He probably was in the mind set of spectating the guy surviving
I don't think any amount of watching anything will prepare you for something like this. This kind of stuff takes practice.
@@MajorNutsack If you are hardcore fan you will pretty much know that Les is pretty harsh when it comes to bringing guest on the show, it is a survival show after all.

A serious bucket list item of mine would be to do this exact thing with Les!
Very much the same for me :)

You and the rest of the world.
I know! He should let people pay a certain number of times per year to do this!
Just remember to always pack for Fire, Water, Shelter and warmth.
i was crying when he was hitting the steel with a stone and my heart was breaking
Just like the striker... 😔
Same! How can he not know how to use a ferro rod??? I thought he was watching Survivorman? He still did it wrong after Les told him to use the blade!
i dunno how dude didnt know how to use that if he's been watching any type of survival shows lol
@@pupperjackcheese Just like your comment, it cracks me up 🤣🥁
You would think after several minutes of seeing 0 spark, he would figure out that something isn't quite right... oh well 😂

Good effort and well done Joe!
You have learnt from the best!!!
Survivorman has to be the best show ever made. Man vs wild doesn’t even come close !
Les is the gold standard for survivor shows. Watched him growing up, mad respect for him. A legend
Laughing every time les breaks out his kit while joe struggles
I almost couldn't watch it with him trying to strike that ferro rod like it was a match.

So many people on here are criticizing Joe. Instead, I think this is a great reminder that no matter how many episodes of Survivorman you have watched, once you are in a true survival situation it's not as simple as immediately recalling (and then implementing) the things you've seen Les do in his episodes.
I screamed when he chose that water filtration bottle. Noooo! Any fan of Les knows to not worry so much about giardia, and there are a ton of good looking streams in this forest.
I would have chose a good knife and a firestarter. What would you choose?
@@CookedOnions the hatchet had a built in flint stick, so taking the hatchet is really a two for one. I live in the boreal forest of northern Canada and I’m a hunting guide, from my experience a nice sharp hatchet is more valuable than the knife, if you have a sharp hatchet you can do almost anything you can with the knife just with a bit more difficulty. But if you have a knife you can’t use it for things you would use a hatchet for.
@@CookedOnions That is what I carry with me at all times, I live in Northern BC and play in the bush frequently, those two are a must. I have a flint n steel an opinel knife and a large pocket knife plus my mini leatherman in my purse.
I usually carry a hatchet, sharpening rod and a well designed machete along with a small magnesium bar and such. Id hate not to have them even for a night alone in the cold.
I had a long wait for my pizza delivery today so I can relate.
Please make this a series, Les! 🙏 I enjoyed this as much as the original SurvivorMan series. It's really interesting to see how untrained members of the public would react and learn from your teachings 😊
I know this has been said but what a good episode. I'm sure its hard to get a good guest for a episode like this but you should 100% do this again!
Keep it up les!
You don't learn anything unless you make mistakes. Best way to teach. Didn't think Mr. Stroud could gain any more of my respect but he did
Really can't imagine that Les Stroud is doing this again on youtube, it was years ago that I've been watching them in discovery channel! 👍
Smart of him to keep all the rights to the survivorman series.
Wait is this a recent episode or a rerun if a old episode put on to UA-cam
@@jcman-lp6lg upload of an older episode. This aired in 2015.
@@TheLastOldOne thanks
Again? These episodes are all years old.
Survivorman was the first survival show I have seen that put the idea of “you sweat, you die” in freezing climates into my head. That simple bit of survival education is so vital and so lacking in most tv shows that it goes to show Les’ attention to the audience’s benefit
Great video Les,, I can't believe when he set up his camp the second night he didn't at least try to make his camp as close to how he saw Les's set up. If I was with Les I would be watching everything he did like a hawk :)
I am 53 years old. been doing stuff like this well before I ever heard of Less Stroud.
I have to say now though, I can't tell if he and I are like minded, or if I have watched so much of his stuff that I absorbed his mentality on everything.
I love it when shows let viewers come on the show, I wish Joe choose a fire-starter
He had one! A flint rod atleast, he just didn't know how to use it properly at first.
Congrats, Les! You were obviously the king in the past, and just like that you now have the best current wilderness/survival show on the planet (again!). Les 2.0. Well done, sir, and please, for all of our benefit, keep going!
I love that you can see a clearly visible change in Joe's appearance over just a few days
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I may only be 23, and I may be young, but everything I know about lone survival and love of the outdoors I can thank Les for. As far back I can remember, I can still recall watching Survivorman on the TV with my old man "wanting to do what the man on the TV was doing."
You just made a lot of us feel very old!
Cheers from Highdelberg, Germany! I hope that Les does his thing for another few decades, with or without fans!
Bin aus der Nähe von Bruchsal! Grüße nach Heidelberg!
me too, seems his fan base is far and wide. I for one never tire of it.

@Matthew Foran most definitely! He IS the real deal.
Doing my first solo kayak/camp 50 miles down a river in Central FL. Been watching a few kayak youtubers just for that part of it, and the survival is definitely why I watch you. #1 thing..never forget its all mental.
Would be interesting to see a "behind the scenes" episode of Les going through the pool of "contestants", a few short clips about each, and the weeding out process, and why he chose who he chose. I think it would be interesting to see amount of people that truly think they could survive with Les on a serious survival trip.
Not like the one night episodes he does with celebrities.
.
I would enjoy the challenge but man that would be tough.
I am sure they did not register to get roasted for the public...
@@agnidas5816 very true haha

This was such a good idea Les! Glad to see you still doing what you love

Never thought it was easy..... Sometimes while the series was in production I wondered how much mental fortitude it took to say OK lets film the next episode.
What’s awesome about these shows is I bought a ferro rod and file as a teenager and started working with them now as an adult I use this every morning to start my prayer fire.. always take it with me on hikes and camping as well
Man, big face palm when he was trying to start that first fire lol. At least Les picked someone with alot to learn, I do respect him for do it and making it through. This would be an amazing experience. Take me next time Les, Pleeease! Lol
I love how its a person who thinks they know enough. Yet uses a rock with a ferro rod. Teaches anyone including Les that no one knows enough and can continue to improve. This can be used for everyday life about reality of the outdoors and its harshness. Including time management, concentration, toughness, item preparation and knowledge on all items that you take with you. Best advice of them all is...to improvise!
do more fan challenges.. this is awesome to show what reality tv is vs actual survival to those who do not understand the difference
Witnessing the dichotomy of the experienced/inexperienced person was marvelous. It was cathartic to view how a person may theoretically understand the importance of fire and shelter but make decisions contrary to those needs. Creation of the bed, for example, and making time to gather wood to burn. You can tell Les' compatriot knows he needs those things but only achieves them piecemeal.
I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and would love to see further episodes along this paradigm.
Please and thank you!
This was great. I'd love to see a whole season of this. Taking the inexperienced out to learn, first hand. Great job Joe! Hope this inspired you to get out there and practice you're survival skills.
Well done guys.
Les is the Real Deal Folks! The Education he offers is Golden and a very necessary. Thank you very much Les for the time and effort you pour into this very Important Subject "Surviving" Not Camping.
Big difference between survival and a weekend hike.
@@chronicawareness9986 it's realistic because he was bringing that stuff to survive not to hike, this is supposed to be a last case scenario
@@chronicawareness9986 Yeah I think it's more of like: imagine if your thrown into a situation like this with no real equipment. I think this is what Les was trying to do when he took all the gear. Because at any point, what if something happened that forced you into a survival situation. Maybe you were hiking with some buddies and you strayed too far off course and since it was supposed to be a day trip, you didnt have any equipment and now you gotta tough it out through the night in the middle of a forest. Most people just wouldn't be ready for that situation so I think it was kinda realistic in that regard.
@@guthetanuki256 I don't understand. Even on day hikes which is all I've done in years, I take minimum a jacket, first aid kid, 2 lighters, multitool, knife, and 1 liter water bottle. Compass, flint and striker, headlamp or flashlight. Yeah my pack is heavy but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I guess military experience helps a great deal too.
His 1st step should have been viewing your Survivorman series, then he would have had a fighting chance. Les you do a remarkable job teaching folks what they need to know. Hopefully, this was a lesson for anyone who prepares to go out with you. Thanks for what you do..Matt

This was actually great. Failing in a setting like this, is the absolute best way to learn and remember what to do the next time.
This episode taught us beginners more than any other episode. Preparation, priorities, kit familiarity, location selection, shelter making, fire making, fire lay.
“Trust me, but don’t rely on me.” Man! I wish I’d heard those words before going on a week long camping trip with my buddy a couple years ago. I literally relied on him for EVERYTHING. Had something happened to him we would have both been in trouble, because I was clueless.

Yeah but unless you have a HSS striker or paid over $200 for it (high cerium and magnesium content) those flimsy strikers will leave you cold😂....and if you don't know the difference between "rock and steel" and a Ferro rod, you'll break your widdle 1/2 by 6 inch "giant eBay Ferro rod".
You can get 1 X 10 inch Ferro rods now, but they're hard. Need a serious striking tool.

That's what I was thinking. I was hoping Joe would have at very least heated some rocks to place near his body. I've watched Les and learned a lot but I don't think I'd be a great survivalist. If or when the shit hits the fan, I have my farm with lots of resources. There are no woods around here but there's a creek a stones throw away. There are thousands of cattle and hogs to trade for in a 10 mile radius of my home. City dwellers would survive for a little while but that's it.

Really like this fan survival format. I'd love to do survival training but lLes Stroud is the pinnacle of survival teachers. Learn your stuff before doing this, but love it good job to both of you.
Just keep taking random people out, just like this. We all love it.
