No, that's what any experienced belayer would do. So, no "luck " is involved unless you're one of those who climbs above your rock knowledge level. Often seen when gym climbers don't bother to learn traditional techniques.
And about the helmet comments - helmets are primarily for protection from rock fall coming from above. If you want something for head blows - put on a football or motorcycle helmet.

True. Top shelf belaying there. But had the climber placed his pieces of protection gear correctly it would not have been such a close call. Quoted for emphasis.
I have to chuckle at all the people commenting like Espen came up with his whole move in a split second. He perceived in a split second. He executed in a split second. It was the magnificent save that it was, I'd bet good money, because he did *not* come up with it in a split second.
Back when Nikolai placed that protection, I'm guessing, is when Espen asked himself, "Now, what if it fails?" and started planning the move. He mentally rehearsed it. He asked when the danger would be greatest, and so he turned up his vigilance as the rope from Nikolai back to the anchor got as long as the anchor was high.
Smart *and well prepared,* as you said.
