As someone who has done this before, I'll admit it is very impressive how fast he removed the slack in the rope. It becomes muscle memory since it is the same movement over and over, but he still did it very fast, if he failed to remove enough slack his hand would been caught into the mechanism with the entire weight of the falling guy so that would have probably destroyed his hand 😅
And he did his once job poorly. Moving backwards kept slack in the system, and does nothing to negate the fall distance. Look at where he ends up once the rope is tight.
@@ricardocabeza6006no... he jumped back getting a lot of slack so he could tension it. If he had not done that he would have never been able to get enough tension in the rope and his friend would have fallen.
@@mrfancyshmancy So when the rope is at full tension, and neither are touching the ground, how does moving backwards magically make the rope shorter? In fact moving backwards prevented him from pulling more rope through his belay device, effectively shortening the rope. Moving forward, taking in slack through the device, and a hard catch (belay term)... the climber would have been the one a few feet in the air, not the belayer.
As much as it is trust , it’s expectation. When you are certified under something, wether it’s first aid, belaying , forklift, or many other certifications, you are expected to put your due diligence in to the best of your ability. Even if it’s someone who you have never met , or someone you hate. The guy in the video did a great job with the situation he was in.
This is just quick critical thinking more so than it being his friend. The climber is very fortunate he has someone spotting him that doesn’t panic in the moment. Absolutely a great thing to witness on how to handle pressure.
The belayer wasn’t thinking critically, he just did the normal lead belay technique as trained and certified. He did it quickly and impeccably, though, which is why his friend survived. A beautiful soft catch with high stakes!

Not a hero
Not heroic, just a guy doing his job, just a guy reacting to something happening. That's what he was suppose to do. He did not knowingly put his life at risk to save the other guy, he just did start he was suppose to do. Such a simple concept that people don't see to understand. The word hero gets misused so much. Doesn't take away or make what he did any less, hero is just not the correct term to use here. Bro made a 4 second clip into 1 minute
That’s absolutely insane, I can’t even comprehend how quickly he reacted and knew what to do. His friend owes him a beer for sure
A whole case of beer, every week for the rest of his life 🙄
As someone who has done this before, I'll admit it is very impressive how fast he removed the slack in the rope. It becomes muscle memory since it is the same movement over and over, but he still did it very fast, if he failed to remove enough slack his hand would been caught into the mechanism with the entire weight of the falling guy so that would have probably destroyed his hand 😅
Kinda obvious and almost instinctual thing to do though.
You need to make the rope taut so you jump back like that.
A beer < A life
You're comparing a beer with his life🥲
This guy pass the "you only had one job" test, mad respect bro
for real we dont give enough credit to the people who do their one job
and some
And he did his once job poorly.

Surrounding yourself with people you trust with your life is a good thing.
And not doing stupid things like this is also a great thing!
Surrounding yourself with people who DESERVE your trust is better.
If somebody was wondering, this happened in Norway, were I come from🇳🇴
This is just quick critical thinking more so than it being his friend.
