    A cautionary tale from a prior owner who is planning to buy another one after many years. It was a stormy night on a country road and I went through a deep puddle at 60mph (2005 - car was 2 years old). The force of the splash pushed a boot sealing around an aircon pipe through the floor and water flooded the ecu. Chaos resulted (wipers, lights, fan randomly switching on and off). No effect on engine so I slowly finished the journey looking like a disco light show. That car had given me the most smiles per mile I've ever had but at the time I could only afford one car so I sold it on after the dealer had fixed it under warranty. Now I'm planning getting a fun, convertible second car. I'm put off a Porsche Boxter by IMS bearing failure risk (recently happened to a relatives one), an MR2 roadster by pre-cat failure risk, and both the MGTF and MX5 by rust - I live in spray range of the sea. Watching this video reminded me of that waste gate noise - and just how enjoyable they are to drive. Decision made.

    Gordan Murray, the legend behind the Mclaren F1 and the Mercedes SLR owned one of these and drove it as his daily for 16 years!
    He kept his Roadster despite the fact that, under his employment with Mercedes, he could have chosen a new Merc' under the value of £150,000 each year.
    Who else would chose a Roadster over a brand new C63 or S Class!?

    I am 192cm and drive a Brabus Clupe version since 2010 under summer season here in sweden.ove this car. If you pissed of one day you just vet you "buttton" in this lill thing and a smile has born 😅.
    Its a lovely drive .You just have to learn how to handle the gearbox. Once you learnt that you will notice a dramatically change. It changes fast etc...
    Long live this ❤ beauty.

    I’ve had a Smart Roadster Coupe from new from 2005 - it’s been an absolute joy but I got very lucky. A very nice young salesmen from Cardiff Mercedes told me the first thing I should do if I bought one was to get all the seals done under warranty. I bought one and took his great advice - it was a big job as the car was basically stripped completely apart but it meant that in almost 20 years I’ve had absolutely no issues with water leaks - I got very lucky🤞🙏🤞😀

    the face you made when you first heard the BOV flutter. Classic

    • @Xenstein
      @Xenstein 5 років тому

      It is not a BOV who is making that noise. The air wave from compressor to intake is blocked by acceleration butterfly when is closed and it rushes back to escape. When is meeting the compressor blades it makes that noise on his way back to escape the pressure. I have made a slightly bigger intake in compressor housing and that noise is disappeared 😊

    Pure is accurate, it is a shame about the gearbox, but it's perfectly usable. Such a shame it wasnt developed further, a very relevant car these days offering 55+mpg and fun. Not for those with a fragile ego. Brabus is the one to go for, just loose the ridiculous 17" alloys, better ride, acceleration and cheaper tyres/refurb costs, I saved 5kg a corner. Modern day British roadster in the vein of the classic lotus/Triumph/Austin of yesteryear. Quirks and all

    • @matthewdon9565
      @matthewdon9565 3 роки тому

      @Rusticle 2.0 not sure why you would hate a manual transmission or think automatic's are better, but each to their own. The smart roadster gearbox wasn't actually automatic it's a automated manual transmission. 👍

    • @matthewdon9565
      @matthewdon9565 3 роки тому

      @Rusticle 2.0 manuals don't stall unless operated incorrectly and they offer far more versatility that an auto, but if your not used to them an auto is much easier. But as I said the smart isn't an automatic, some came with paddles but others changed on the gearstick like a semi automatic, but you could also have them in full auto which was terrible in the roadster, as it never seemed to know which gear to be in, very different from the more modern lightening fast gearboxes.

      @davidbrettell3696 5 років тому +6

      You're jjust embarrassing yourself now. Because if you *actually* see the NCAP reports you will see that the Roadster has never been tested, but the Fortwo on which it is based is probably THE toughest car on the road.
      And in 15 years of working with these cars I have NEVER seen s single gearbox failure yet.
      As for "nippy" - listen to the review - they're not about outright speed, they're about fine balance and handling - hence why on the NC500 route myself and a number of other roadster owners were overtaking Focus STs, Nismos, Ferraris - they're pretty much on a par with the Lotus Elise in twisty stuff - they're a car you can drive at 10/10ths all the time.
      Suggest you *actually* drive one and do some research before you go spouting nonsense in future.

      At the top of my head it was around £1200-2000 for the year?
      We’re going back 6-7 years ago now so at the top of my head I’m not really sure but honestly, you won’t regret it, after the first year it goes down a lot so don’t let it knock you down, if you can get it, get it! :)
      I’m sure if you ring the insurance company themselves they’ll knock some price down as well! :)

      Actually they are very good first cars, lots of safety features, but you need to be handy with tools or have a decent back up budget as things can get expensive if they go wrong. Go for the light version if your on a budget. And don't he conned into paying more because it's a special edition, it was a stripped down cheap edition. Just bare in mind it's mid engined rear wheel drive, so if you drive like an idiot it will spin soon rather than understeer. I'd suggest taking it somewhere safe to learn how to drive it.

    The camera angle on your head makes me feel sick. Spins round too much & you can’t get a sense of depth. Very difficult to gauge

    Quite fun. But for 2 grand I'd look for an mx5 na.

    Good review but the roof is the least of your worries. Buy one cheap and it will empty your wallet. A lot of crap posted by people who have probably never driven one. A lot of owners have had all sorts of other higher powered cars and rate these highly, they are great fun.

      Love mine. I've got mates with 300+hp Audi's and the Roadster scares them. You can put it round twisty roads at speeds you wouldn't dare in a bigger car. I've already brought another for £600 as a hobby/fixer upper.
      Most Roadster fans love the tinkering part.

      ive only had mine for a few months so cant say much on reliability but i wouldnt dare to not maintain it really well because i know its fragile. and yes i love it, its a car with character for sure.

      @@yiggawhat had my Brabus a couple of years now and I've only put 5k miles on it. I love the car but I don't have 100% confidence in it even though it's never actually broken down. They have a reputation for being temperamental, especially if neglected.

      Have you driven one? They are not shit but I recently sold my brabus and kept my 27 year mk1 Mazda eunos. The roadster is too complicated for its own good and has the potential to throw up some eye watering repair costs.
