If you are really traveling on a budget, you could save a bunch of money by using the public transport system. The buses and subway are clean, reliable, frequent, very affordable and go everywhere. Also research the ubiquitous "hawker centers", where you can get a wide variety of food like you did in that Marina Bay Food Court, but at 1/3 the price.

The stuff that came with the French Toast and was inside the butter sandwich is actually called Kaya, which is a bread spread made from Sugar, Coconut Cream, the juice from Pandan Leaves and Eggs. 2 types of Kaya can be found locally at supermarkets, the most commonly consumed green coloured Nyonya Kaya and the less common brown coloured Hainanese Kaya, which contains honey. The perceived sweetness from the Butter Toast is actually from the Kaya, because the sliced butter found in the toast is actually salted butter.
I lived in Singapore for 2 years in 1987-89 and yes there were already a lot of trees and not a lot of high rise buildings. You guys have to go to the HAWKERS eating area. It use to be cheap, now it has a 5 star rating on one of the stalls. Go to Sentosa Island and you might like to go for a walk at the McRitchie park.

Lau Pa Sat is actually EXPENSIVE for us locals. You can actually get food as good at the hawker centres outside the city centre. More famous ones > Tiong Bahru, Old Airport Road, Geylang Serai, and Tekka (Little India).
