Oh, you missed the best part about the Snowgrave route. The game implies that Kris is just as manipulated as Noelle is and you, the player, are the one manipulating them

ya that kind of the point of deltarune when you think about it instead of being a game about how the creatures in the world react to the player it how the player character reacts to the player and seeing if there really ok with what there doing because it impossible to tell if kris is enjoying what the players doing or not because they rip the player out multiple times but they make a new nightmare fountain to have more adventure so ya compare to frisk there a painting with all the color instead of a blank one

Well the player doing this in all the cases not only on that rout . And that why you see kris acting weird when you choose something they don't like .

I also feel like there is another disturbing element of deltarune chapter two is the secret boss spamton. Spamton is a clearly unhinged and seems broken and desperate in his first fight he seems funny, but you can see the cracks form on how corrupted spamton is but this amps up in the spamton neo fight and his shop where he seems outright terrifying and creepy due to it being implied he doesn't have full control over his actions also not to mention he is the main antagonist of the snowgrave route as he gave you the thorn ring and intercepts Kris when they try to seal the fountain, then you realise why spamton is doing this not for a lust for power, or chaos but rather he is desperate and wants to be free by any means necessary as he has nothing to lose as his friends abandoned him because of a petty reason, which helped me empathise with spamton. This attitude is to the extent where even Kris themselves is terrified by spamton as implied in both his fights where Kris steps back from spamton in his first fight after he has a breakdown and forces out a no when you are given the option as Kris sees themselves in spamton trapped by a being beyond their control. this importance combined with how unimportant he is due to how little he is seen in deltarune chapter 2 compared to other characters which makes him such a compelling yet disturbing character, and why he is my favourite character in deltarune chapter 2.

@@valentinobisaccia1258 well similar thing happened to Jevil but the game didn't through the details like how it did with Spamton . I like them both and how the same person messed up with both of them . And i feel like when Spamton said to Kris that maybe they will be free from their strings he ment us who controling kris and we see how Kris don't like it .
Damn man we just in 2 chs from 7 and crazy thing already happens . I wonder who is the new secret boss and is they will be iconic like Spamton ?

@@ajdndbdjbdj well at the very least spamton feels like a step up from jevil, he's not a bad character by any means I still enjoy his character, it's just spamton does his job better and is more disturbing because Toby went all out with the character which makes him more memorable and an interesting note is that spamton almost foils jevil which makes him more interesting, with jevil he seems completely in control and contempt with his newfound "freedom" despite his nihilistic view on the world being a game, but despite that being bored and wanting to mingle with others in a game. With spamton he seems to actively resent his predicament and is not control of his actions despite his efforts and is desperate to gain any sort of freedom or even a friend, since everyone abandoned him, even if it means potentially destroying the world by absorbing the dark fountain and killing darkners indirectly thanks to Noelle and Kris. Like I said he has more depth than jevil which makes him more interesting and more disturbing.

No, Doki Doki Literature Club deserves its spot on this list. It was quite a long while before it went so viral that people knew what they were getting into. Even six months after release, there were still streamers on Twitch (and not small ones either) who had no idea what they were getting into because they didn't follow that genre. All they knew is it had horror elements and that was if they'd bothered to read the warning at all. The game takes so long to flip the switch and advertises itself as so cute that to this day - parents ask if it's a game their kids can play.
On top of that, it is the little things that are more disturbing because once you've started to see the horror.. you realize all along, the game was dropping hints in the first act and you missed them. Many people miss the "traceback.txt" in the background when things go wrong too. It's a very clever game that deserves all the praise it got.

AGREE! and honestly this game even makes me question games like FNAF because it only really depends on jumpscares to be classified as "horror". Like at first it's pretty nerve-racking, but that's the only part it really gets you to be scared. But DDLC over here with the 4th wall breaks, disturbing imagery, and pretty touchy subjects.

Udg felt like peak danganronpa to me. Dr2 missed some of its crazy psychopop style but udg delivered twofold.
I loved it. Also BECAUSE the kids involvement. I loved it as DR game, thats supposed to make you feel like witnessing a roadkill, painful to look at but unable to avert your eyes. By just skimming over topics so dark and real, by having them in but not playing main role in story, it reminds us how little attention we give to issues that are present in our world and very much real.
UDG wanted to make you scarred, feel this disturbing stuff branded in your brain, making you flinch when you think about it - not just when the game shows it, losing relevance when the credits roll.
      Thats whats danganronpa to me.

22:25 You just had to mention Humphrey didn't you.... What if I told you Humphrey was terrifying for a reason. He was trying to keep you from that last hour of the game, but you powered on anyway and you have no one but yourself for the trauma it gave you.
    (Massive explanation/spoilers below)
It's explained that Headspace is a looping "cycle of blissful ignorance" designed to keep Sunny from reaching the Truth. And in Humphrey's boss fight he even references this saying "I'm afraid this cycle will never end", and that, "ignorance is bliss. How many times must we do this?" As one of the three great creatures of Headspace, Humphrey serves as a self-aware final boss that's trying to stop you from discovering the Truth. "Final boss" isn't quite the right word for it. He's closer to the final level of Pacman. A unbeatable barrier that Sunny is supposed to die against. That's what happened to all the skeletons lining his stomach, all that remains from the previous defeated loops.
But Humphrey doesn't win. Not this time. Not when Sunny's about to move away the next day. You see, Humphrey is a metaphor for Headspace and Sunny himself. Like Sunny, Humphrey spends all his time inside of himself, talking with other versions of himself. All the characters in Headspace are just parts of Sunny's dream, and Sunny has retreated inside himself just like Humphrey.
This fact is also referenced in the nature of Humphrey's level. Its a laboratory. While all the other areas in game are based on things in the real world, (Sweetheart's castle is based on Sweetheart movies; Last Resort on Sunny's blackjack computer game, etc) Humphrey's lab is never fully explained. While Humphrey himself is based on a baby book "Hungry Humphrey" implying that Humphrey is Sunny's oldest imaginary friend. But the laboratory is different. Its not based on anywhere in the real world, its based on an area in the Truth sequence. Shown at 23:36. The Humphrey laboratory is based on this hospital room, where patients watch cartoon programs of Sunny's adventures in Headspace as escapism, so they don't have to think about the medical reality of death, Mari's death.
Humphrey is the last obstacle between Sunny and Blackspace. He literally gives the last key as a enemy drop, almost like he swallowed the key to keep Black Space locked away forever. He's described in the foe facts as "Absolute, raw terror." He represents the part of Sunny's mind thats screaming at him not to face the truth, to just run away and repeat the cycle again. But Sunny can't do it anymore. Sunny chooses to defeat Humphrey, striking him down in one blow, in a battle that should have been insurmountable.
In the video, you said you want to unplay the game, so that you can be blissfully ignorant again.
I'm sorry that you reached the end. I'm sorry that Humphrey couldn't stop you.

Yes, when Noelle freezes an enemy, they are dead. If she uses Snowgrave on a normal enemy, they disappear into dust. Just like in Undertale when a monster dies.
Also, she doesn't kill at Kris's command, she kill at the player's command, (or maybe, Kris forces Noelle to kill because the player is controlling them, so Kris is forced to do that too), which is different

Also in regards to Deltarune Chapter 2, let's not forget how creepy Spamton can be, especially after you go through the Snowgrave route. In the base game, you hear his dark backstory, see someone or something trying to break free from him, and there's also the entirety of Spamton NEO as a boss and as a character. No matter if Spamton dies or is left behind, he's not going to remove those puppet strings. The Snowgrave route, on the other hand, doesn't give you any real insight into who Spamton is, as he only appears inside of his dumpster to sell you items and keep track of the remaining enemies. When you get through the route, however, Queen's castle is barren except for Spamtonized portraits, Pipis on the floor, and only a few select enemies, and let's not forget how he comes out of nowhere after the Queen fight is skipped. These two things combined, in the Snowgrave route at least, give us no reason to sympathize with Spmaton and makes him seem all the more sociopathic and deranged. Plus, it makes his death all the more satisfying than it would be if you fought him in the non-Snowgrave route.

Honestly, I think Drawn To Life 2 should've at least been mentioned. It's a sweet little game where you play as the Creator, whom draws a little hero that lives with these cute little creatures called Raposa, and the hero sails from island to island in an attempt to defeat Wilfre, a little gremlin who's stealing all the colors in the world. You make friends along the way, save the friends you already had that Wilfre captured, and soon enough, color is restored to the world!
Oh wait, whoops, I accidentally wrote the cutesy, written-on-the-tin description for this game. Allow me to start over!
The game is *actually* about you, who is *actually God,* creating *Jesus,* who lives with creatures called Raposa that are *figments of an injured child's imagination,* and *Jesus* sails from island to island in an attempt to stop *Satan* from completing his plan of keeping as much color out of the world as he can, so the world won't disappear. Why would the Raposa world disappear? Oh I dunno, maybe because *THE GAME LITERALLY, NOT EVEN KIDDING, TAKES PLACE IN THE DREAM OF A CHILD THAT BARELY SURVIVED A CAR CRASH, LOST BOTH OF HIS PARENTS, AND WENT INTO A COMA THAT INITIATED THE EVENTS OF THE FIRST TWO DRAWN TO LIFE GAMES. JUST A HUNCH THOUGH!* I also forgot to mention, all of that seriously happens in this game! I'm not making parallels that aren't there! That is literally the in-game explanation for everything that happens in this game! Drawn To Life 3 even thoroughly explains to the player, yes, that seriously happened!
Tl;Dr: Drawn To Life 2 is a cute game, until the last three minutes at least.

The most shockingly dark game I've probably ever played so far is Disco Elysium.
While not a kids game, a lot of the games advertising makes it out to be a fun 70s detective game with unique table-top RPG mechanics. When you actually play the game though, you quickly discover how depressing and bleak it is.
You pretty much play as a self-loathing, hoplessly depressed and suicidal detective who has lost all his memory and now has to try and solve a murder while piecing together who he once was in a war-torn poverty strucken place Revachol. I don't think I can do the game much justice by just describing all the other reasons why it's dark, so all I'm going to say is that you should play the game and experience it for yourself. It is a must play, an easy 10/10

I'm surprised there are still people who knows this game. I have to say this. I remember playing it nearly when it first came out, while I was around 5 (yes i was playing video games at those ages on my father's pc), and to the little me it was some goofy game with unusual level mechanics and random stuff happening. It then honestly became like a classic piece where even years passed, you still go back and see it again from time to time for me. But as I played it again and again, grown up more and more every time, I realized different details, understood the story, found some lore behind it, and then the dark even though not too deep themes it actually went along with. I was honestly surprised each time. Even though it might seem like some simple and unimportant game, it's one of those rare things I could say I grew up with, which even if I never really mention, makes the game special for me. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time deserves a mention at least. Y'know, the RPG where the bros travel through time, teaming up with their baby selves to stop the Shroobs from destroying the Mushroom Kingdom and everything else? Often regarded as one of the darkest Mario games ever? Moments that really stand out are when you get a first taste of what the Shroobs are bringing in HolliJolli village. They bomb a village at Christmas time! And then there's Toadwood Forest where we find them strapping the Toads to trees and draining them of either their blood or lifeforce to convert it into fuel for their flying saucers and by the time the bros make it to the factory, the toads are dried up husks fusing with the trees begging for help! Y'know! For kids!

I know that you couldn't decide on what Kirby game was the darkest, but I do have one that I think takes the cake.
Planet Robobot: with the main antagonist, President Haltmann, spending his whole life on trying to reactivate a wish-granting machine to save his daughter he lost in an accident years ago. His memory begins to fade due to multiple uses of the machine, and eventually the machine takes over Haltmann's body and soul. You begin to destroy the machine, and as you destroy it's core you can hear the screams of agony and misery of Haltmann's soul as you destroy what is left of it until the machine is left as nothing but a metallic husk with no motive left. The saddest part about his story? A secretary began to work for him that looked oddly familiar to him. However, he knew not who she was due to his memory being wiped. He continued to use the machine more to find his daughter, but it would never work. It turns out that his secretary as a true identity, Susie's full name is "Suzanna Haltmann," President Haltmann's own daughter.

I always thought that Omori had more inspiration from Yuume Nikki than from Earthbound, the concept of dreams, a shut in, damn, there's even a secuence (the name of the area it's a spoiler by itself) that resembles the main hub from Yuume Nikki, mostly because of the doors and background. (also, spoilers)
And actually, most of the dream secuences are like that for a reason.
It's supposed to distract Sunny, make him forget everything, the fact that the dream version of his friends were searching for Basil (that was always the one that discovered the first leaks from Black Space in every cycle), and slowly forgot what they were doing while being distracted with all of the objectives, Space Boyfriend's tape, escaping from Sweetheart's castle, the Last Resort, Humphrey.

While I got to know about Omori thanks to Yume Nikki after being a hardcore Yume Nikki addict for years, I actually feel like Omori inspired from a lot of things together with Yume Nikki and Earthbound.
Yes it had definitely a lot of stuff from Yume Nikki, say the hikikomori protagonists with a game that takes place in dreams, _cough_ the Oyasumi ending _cough_, and the literal Black Space itself which I'd absolutely consider a Yume Nikki fangame if it was a separate game. Though, the Headspace in general reminded me of Earthbound a lot too, both of them are odd adventures you go through with your friends afterall, while also covering dark themes. But other than that it had also slight inspirations from other games too, hell even other kinds of media. Sweetheart's castle part with sbf was kinda anime-ish for an example, not to mention there were some little cultural themes in a few corners here and there, like japanese culture.
Man, especially after looking around Omocat's tumblr, she really is a man of culture huh.

Omori has more in between "dark" parts in headspace thanks to the leaks from the deepest part of Sunny's mind, to me it was like a mix of Yuume Nikki and what would happen if there was something between earthbound's pace and, idk, mother 3's pace ? But yeah, it's kind of a good mix between those, it even began it's developement at that moment where there was a boom thanks to games based on earthbound (Undertale, a game about hope and... Lisa the painful, that one)
At the end, Omocat got an odd combination about the core of the game, but still a good one.

I’m not gonna lie. I think Undertale’s Dark aspects are weak sauce in comparison to the Existential Dread of Deltarune (so far), from knowing that your player character is actively trying to resist your will by removing your soul from their body, to the act of Snowgrave Genocide being more than just wonton slaughter, but (literally)Cold calculated manipulation of a fragile girl who needed confidence more than raw power, and just the non-existence of The Dark Worlds, knowing that these worlds can be made and snapped out of existence with something as easy as sealing a fountain, and in the end some characters suspiciously knowing way too much. Plus let’s be frank, Undertale is dishonest. A good portion of the plot is easy to see as fabricated lies from a group of monsters salty about losing a war that they probably had more to do with then they’d let you believe. So honestly, I agree with the placement of Deltarune. I think it’s Existenial Horror far outstrips any obvious “horror” that Undertale has.

THEN imagine having to live the rest of your life fused together with multiple other people and presumably your brains have also fused so you're not even the same person anymore.
The cherry on top is being kept hidden in a underground grungy lab being fed dog kibble of all things for who knows how long.
I could also go on about the horror of getting killed and having your soul being trapped inside a glass tube just having to watch the world go by for, once again, who knows how long.
And then the whole thing with Flowey, dying and then suddenly you're awake but in a fucking flower. And then the realisation that flowers can't feel and you're now trapped in a unfeeling husk which eventually drives you crazy.

Kirby is a being of pure goodness (depending on how you see it) so it only makes sense that the arch-nemesis of the series is an embodiment of pure evil, the exact opposite of Kirby and by extension dreamland. Dreamland is a happy, cute and charming place, doesn’t it make sense for the creatures that wish to destroy it to be eldritch horrors that are anything but that? It really drives home that these creatures ARE NOT from dreamland, and ARE. NOT. GOOD. and that makes the player want to defeat them. I’m also believing in what the next Kirby game will be, with Star Allies and Forgotten Land we had two final bosses that are gods and are the source of the Ancients’ power, so I guess the lore is going to be more centered about them.

Ok chisel 2 by nitrome is a pretty dark game. The premise is you're a drilling robot in space that cuts planets down to size while avoiding or destroying violent robots. However, in chisel 2, Chisel's supervisor loses control of chisel and she destroys a bunch of planets and robots. For a flash game it made me think a lot as a kid. Those planets were people's homes. The robots do have families and I'm certain one planet was a nature preserve. Nitrome had a bunch of games that were dark, like Canary, AKA deadspace flash edition.

But the villains are really the disturbing part, there is Cyrus who is a depressed man who wants to destroy earth, ghetsis who manipulated people into thinking Pokémon are sad with there trainers and want to be let free. Then Volo who starts out as a kind person helping you throughout your journey in hisui but turns out to be evil and uses giritina to try to get to arceas to create a new world and let this one rot. I thought Specimen 11 in Spooky's was horrific. The monster itself wasn't scary… it was more about the backstory and its implications; I feel like it appeals to a somewhat niche vibe of horror for those who are more deeply impacted by the horror-stories of fast food joints and meat and whatnot, it has a more disgusting/lose-your-appetite approach. And to put the cherry on top, if someone's face being pressed into a grill (or was it an oil fryer?) doesn't make your stomach churn idk what will
