My Grandfather bought a JD G in 1949 which my father used from new until 1966 when he sold it. It changed ownership several times and was restored. 2 years ago my brother managed to buy it back. We live in New Zealand and John Deere has always been a respected quality tractor. The G has a sound all of it's own.
I had a neighbor that plowed all day with his G, it sounded so good. Nothing Runs Like A Deere
A bit of trivia, the "Nothing runs like a Deere" tagline was used for the snowmobile line!
Ther is something that runs even better than a deere it's a Lanz Bulldog greetings from Germany 😉
I have a 1938 G and I will never give it up. I use it for almost everything. It works especially well on my saw rig.
Glad to hear the good ole G is still earing its keep😎 Thanks for watching👍
My dad had an unstyled G. Like you said 4 speed and max of 6 mph. He had the hydraulics modified for a remote cylinder so we could pull a 10 ft wheel disc. It also used to run an Allis Chalmers model 90 combine. We had lots of mud one fall. The previous owner had steel wheels for the rear and spacers for the front wheels to give more clearance. It had cast rear centers and 36 inch rims. Those came off and the steel went on. I drove it 7 miles on steel pulling the model 90 with bomber tires on it. 6 mph was plenty fast for the steel. It was on gravel roads and every impact came right up through the seat
It was a horse of a tractor. It also ran a one row Gehl ensilage cutter. It didn't start real well if you killed it when hot. That was a workout.
We traded in JD AR for the G. The AR was so early it had the rod for oil pressure and was on steel when we got it somewhere around 1950.
Been nice to still have them. They were out of date when traded and money was tight.
Someday I'd like to get a G, but they do go for a pretty penny. Thanks for another great video!
I’ve wanted one too but I agree they are a pretty penny. Would be nice to find one in barn that hasn’t been going in a while and fix up. Thanks for watching👍🏻
My dad has a GM and he used it for a long time as a pulling tractor he also had a 730 that he pulled with a few times but mostly used it for work he saddly sold it after me and him took our last joy ride to an antique tractor show and he will not get rid of his g no matter what
Love your farm machinery history videos! They are the best on UA-cam!
I really appreciate that, Thanks for watching and supporting👍👍
Legionary that john Deere G still sought after machine😊
True👍🏻👍🏻
We have a John Deere G 1938 model I believe there was bought in 39 it had a two-row mounted corn picker dad bought the tractor in sunfield Michigan from Welch's hardware store it worked on the farm until the late 1960s still remains A1 family tractor
Back in the early 1960's our neighbor had 3 JD G's all stylized. Believe 2 had narrow front ends but the 3rd had a wide front with a narrow pedestal all incorporated together. I never saw it converted to the narrow configuration but would say the wide axles would have to be removed somehow. By your video I didn't see that as a model option. But it sure did look like a factory front end. Neighbor did put a Char-Lynn power-steering on it. Made it a lot easier to drive. Electric start with petcocks for each cylinder to help starting. I plowed with it pulling 3-14s" in black soil and clay hills. They were pullers.
Definitely where some pulling machines, Thanks for watching👍
We had 2 GW models when I was a kid back in the early60's. I was some where around 9 - 10 years old out driving one in the potato fields. I was on top of the world for a kid that age. That was back when everyone was expected to pitch in and help, no matter what it was. Had many fond memories of doing that!
Sounds like good memories, Thanks for watching!
Grew up on a 52 G . Had to overhaul it a few times. It was bored out to max. It had power to pull a 5 bottom plow tried it with a neighbors plow to see if it would do it. Was very strong pulling tractor but very thirsty on gas.
We had 3 over the years. They were really strong. We pulled a 8 ft offset disk pulled it well but it was the thirstiest tractor we ever ran.
👍👍
Its sister , the 730 gas had the same inherited problem. No way a tank of gas would last long , guess that why they didn't make many gas, got one , it loves gasoline !!!!
A friend's father had an old "General Purpose". Started on gas, then switched over to kerosene. His father-in-law worked at a refinery, and started bringing him Distillate [white gas] to run in it. Hand cranked, if you didn't get everything just right, it would wear you out cranking it. Friend and I drug many a flow line to various locations on that oil lease.
Pops had a G (m), used mostly to belt drive silo blower, probably some disc work too. He loved the super low resting idle sound. The G loved gasoline when working hard on the blower;). Under heavy load on the belt the whole tractor would hop up and down.
I recall way back in the day I was probably 4-5 yo Dad had a 1950 G JohnDeere, he had gone to the Tractor Supply Co. and bought a “Power Block” and his Nephew installed it. But later he had to have a water pump installed to keep it from overheating!
Granddad owned a 1951 G that had been bored .090 oversized and it had no problem pulling 3-16’s in any soil but in clay it would overheat. Wish I had it today. That tractor would really bark under a load. After dark the exhaust pipe would glow cherry red when plowing.
I bet that was a fun tractor to plow with! Thanks for watching👍🏻👍🏻
I own a 720 diesel. G is on my bucket list
On my bucket list too👍🏻 thanks for watching
1950 G we use with a logging trailer for mostly for firewood and logs, log spilter and have fun at the tractor pulls at the lease, on the 2nd or 3th place!
Awesome tractors!😎
I have a 1947 GM that runs good although i don’t use it that much. The shift lever won’t go into the 5-6 slot and I haven’t taken the transmission cover off yet to see why. I enjoy your videos!
Thanks for watching!👍👍
I didn't know an early G had single stick shift 4 speed,i used to have a 70 diesel with kick over transmission and 2 reverses nice video
Thanks for watching👍🏻 that’s how my 70 is too with the high low shifter, can’t decide if I like it better than like a 60 with the 6 individual shift spots
The first tractor I ever rebuild was serial 4240, low radiator G. Didn't even know how rare it was, till after it was gone.
Dad had a '51 G, in 1959 he traded it in with a two-row pull type JD corn picker for a leftover 720D electric start with a 227 mounted picker. I've owned it & another 720D ES. I've also owned a B, 70D, 520, 40S , LA & now a 1944 "H".
Sounds like a good collection of JDs, Thanks for watching
Great vid
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching👍🏻
I have a 1949 G I restored and a 1952 GW that was converted over to propane! The G propane is a fun tractor to run!!!
That's a unique tractor, cant say I've ever seen or heard of a propane conversion on one. Did the valves have to get changed for propane?
I got a 51 running on E85 at 90 HP. I love that thing!!!
Thats a powerful G! Do you pull with it?
A friend of mine had a Farmall M that he used to pull it had M and W pistons in it. He said did good until he came up agaist a G he said they in class by themself.
I’ve always wondered how the M compared to the G. Thanks for watching👍🏻
I farmed with a 1959 G with a flathead I dearly loved it.
There was no 1959 G made that I ever heard of. If it is, it's worth quite a bit of money, it would have to be the only one made in 1959.
JD didn't make a G in 1959.
Your correct I have big fingers Anda small keyboRd
I owned and used a 720D pony start co and a 730D electric start, have casually looked for a G, but have never owned one. Can do a lot of farm work on one (pto bailer and pull my NH 1040 harrowbed)
I’ve always wanted one. 😊
I own a GM and like the last guy said the sound is so awesome love plowing with her only thing is she can be cranky starting sometimes being she’s a flywheel start and the steering is hard
man i absolutely love your videos
We have a 1945 GM and 1949 G. The 49 is my nephews pulling tractor. Its 6.5 bore 10 inch stroke. 13:1 compression. It made 143 horsepower on the pto dyno when we let off afraid to blow up the pto gears
These tractors is what would become the 720s. And the 720s are my favorite tractors from the 50s
I wore the seat out of a couple pairs of pants farming on a John Deere 720 diesel in the early 1970’s. I was helping my uncle and he had two pony motor 720s. Still my favorite JD tractor.
That was a great tractor.
Yes l do own a 1951 G
👍🏻👍🏻
Definitely a cool tractor 🚜 😎
Yes they are! Thank you for watching
Currently have a 1940 G torn down for restoration
Sounds like a fun project! Thanks for watching👍🏻
they were the best sounding deere along with d
Got a friend with an old G...he pulls it locally but they wont let him register it....had some things done to it...i really love your channel!!
I saw in reading there was a model P for potato. Was this a model of its own or a variant of another?
I own a 1948 GW
nice machine👍🏻
I inherited my grandpa's 1952 G with single front wheel don't know if factory or later added.
Definitely could be factory, thanks for watching
