    Bring back Zia! Bring back Zia! That was a blast. I was rolling on the floor laughing my head off when Zia remarked"The robots are on drugs!"

    Great to be able to see into the thinking of these expert players.

    Great to experience these giants (of the game) humourously and informatively taking through these big hands.

    You are so lucky to have Robson here, who even screwed again and again by the robots goes to next board and tries to be as didactic as possible.

    I was a serious tournament player 30+ years ago until I married a non-player, and I'm of the same generation as these two. Zia was well known as a dashing bidder, so I can say that he hasn't changed. Playing with robots tends to make aggression much more profitable than against good opponents. I never played against Robson as he was a UK player.

    Sue, would be fun if we could play the hands in advance of the next round. Funny to see the great Robson look almost like a beginner opposite Zia!

      I’m afraid we don’t have any sight of the hands before the players play them so I don’t think that would be possible. To be fair to Andrew, he was completely stitched up by Zia’s robots, who seemed to want to shower Zia with tricks at every opportunity. Weirdly, the robots have been much better in the last few challenges ( not yet on UA-cam) see what you think when they appear - or, of course, head over to patroon.com/ntbridge and see them all way ahead of the regular audience 😀

      @@mailsuejohnson Seems like you could create a nice little revenue stream if you figured that out, ie letting players play the challenge beforehand.

      We have now found a way to do this, folks. See the short video on importing and using LIN files in BBO and the links to the LIN files will be in the description below each video

    Notice how on hand #7 that for all the talk about how Robson uses the Law (sic) of Total Tricks to make his bidding decision, no one mentions the fact that it's off by TWO tricks on this deal for no apparent reason. E/W have 9 trumps, N/S have 8, so according to the LoTT the trick total should be 17. But N/S can make 11 tricks in Diamonds while E/W make 8 in hearts. That's 19. Everyone, even the narrator, glosses over that fact. Nobody confronts it or even begins to question the LoTT's accuracy or usefulness.
    To all those students watching this video: Do NOT rely on the LoTT to make your decisions. It is only an evaluation tool that is accurate only about 40% of the time. It is not the panacea that its adherents claim it to be.

      In my team of mostly experts nobody uses these laws as they aren't really very useful.

    I wonder if they are playing against the basic robots or the advanced robots ?

      Advanced!

      So sorry - I just went back and checked the original footage because robots have been so much better in all challenges since and these guys were actually playing with basic robots.

    • @timpreece945
      @timpreece945 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for checking. I think the BBO robots are not too bad - all things considered.
      I was thinking it would also be interesting to see how an advanced robot would perform on these hands.
      Would an advanced BBO robot actually do better that even Zia or Andrew ?

    • @mailsuejohnson
      @mailsuejohnson 3 роки тому

      @@timpreece945 It's a bit of a faff but one way to check is to import the hands into BBO (see our short video on importing LIN files and try it with the hands from Sally Brock vs Barry Myers - link to the LIN files in the description below the video). Instead of sitting South and taking the place of the experts, you could put a robot in all four seats and see what happens :) I don't think you can put advanced robots in though. The way things work when you sit South is that if the robot is declarer by virtue of the auction it does actually play it, (unlike in the original challenge when it swaps the human into its seat). Thus the first hand in the Sally vs Barry challenge is declared by the robot North in 3NT. I won't give away the outcome :)

    I would forewarn your players in future that the robots don't play any signalling - their small pips seem to be played close to randomly.

      The insight of their thinking is unvaluable regardless of the strenght of the opponents. But I agree some trained robots for specific hands ( I could provide that with my software) could be even better.

    • @mailsuejohnson
      @mailsuejohnson 3 роки тому +1

      @@gonzalogoded2089 I completely agree Gonzalo - it's a privilege to sit over the shoulders of players of this standard and hear how they think. Not to mention the entertainment value that comes from some of the robot antics and the fine example of utterly gracious behaviour from Andrew under the circs :) The man is a hero
