I love my 83 calypso red Lotus Esprit, I named her Penelope It she is well sorted. After 6 years of ownership it has never let me down. It has never broke down and like any exotic car you need to maintain them. Problem with people is one thing breaks and they don't fix it and before long the car is need of lots of TLC. It is common with most any exotic. More cars in the stable to choose from and I will get to that later. Handling is excellent, turbo boost is awesome and for the money it is a great buy. Most people that pick on them never owned one.
They can be reliable, Harry Metcalf of Harry's Garage had an identical one for a long while and it was fine, he even did a drive to where the sking location for the James Bond film where filmed with no issues at all. Like all old exotics they need a lot of maintenance and driving regularly.

I have a 1986 lotus esprit turbo hc , I maintain it an it never gives me problems that shows people if you keep them maintained they don't break down period it's my 8th year with this car it's never let me down not once so all this loads of trouble usually serious crap is nonsense.
The thing that would most discourage me from Lotus ownership is enduring the endless litany of "Lots of trouble, usually serious" jokes from people who think they're the first ones to share that joke.
As an Elise owner, I can relate. So. Many. Idiots. Not only do they think they’re the first ones to share that joke, their ignorance reaches new heights as they don’t realize that modern Lotus have Toyota drivetrains. My Elise has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned as well as the least expensive to maintain. I couldn’t create serious trouble with that car if I tried.
I can’t believe how fast the prices shit up. Wish I had purchased one I drove 10 years ago. I was too picky then. Now I would have nearly doubled my investment and had a good time.

As a kid watching For Your Eyes Only, I absolutely fell in love with that gen and spec Lotus Espirit. I totally agree with Casey that it was a total waste and bummer to see them just blow it up. But then he shows up in the mountains with another Espirit in reverse spec. Beauty.👍 I guess Q always has another one in the garage.
I got to ride in a '70s model Lotus Esprit in the late '80s. I was amazed at the performance and handling of that little car with four cylinders and quad carburetors. Even then I remember thinking how primitive the car seemed but was still amazed by the performance.
I had a 1978 S1 in the very early 90’s. It’s the only car I always took the long way home in via the twisty lanes. It always broke down and over heated and I loved it!

If the Esprit is unreliable then someone have worked on the car with no experience or it needs maintenance because the car is simple too work on and doo not break…that is my experience from owning one for 14 years…
Had a White 1982 Esprit S2 with Red interior and the normally asperated 2.2 engine. It had been my dream to own one since I could drive (second only to the Black and Gold JPS version) and my first drive in it was in the rain from London to Leeds on the motorway avoiding the trucks as you are so low they can't see you. Amazing quirky car, the handbrake is on the doorside and used to fall out the car having caught my trouser leg on it. All that is separating you from the engine is a plywood bulkhead so conversation isn't really an option. Drove it to the garage to sell it many times but just driving her made me turn round and take her home. Eventually had to sell as moving away and regret not having kept her in better shape - like all supercars you need deep pockets and lots of time ....
In the 80s I remember seeing my first one. Driving down the Interstate in my CJ 5 a white one come flying by me. I didn't know what it was at the time but it looked and sounded pretty cool. Congratulations sir, I am very happy for you. I seriously enjoy when someone finally gets a car that has been their dream. Dosen't matter if it is a super rare high dollar piece or a eyebrow raiser, if it is something that you have always wanted then that is all that matters. Enjoy your new family member brother she is going to bring you many happy memories.
Have owned my 87 Esprit NA HC for over a year now and only issue I had was from a dirty earth. 2 second fix. besides that, incredible fun to drive, reliable (may be due to the non turbo) and really turns heads.

If you need parts for things like that oil system Casey, I think they might have shared parts with Rolls Royce at this point, as Rolls Royce owned them atleast when the S1 came out, also I gotta admit one of the ideas I've always had in the back of my mind is what would an S1 do if you went the Lotus Elise way with it, like how good would it be if you fitted a Modern Toyota 4 Cylinder to it like they do with the modern ones. which if you can find an S1 with a blown motor, might make for a fun project car, although given how bad these cars are on space, that maybe a complete improbability also Ed, you need to change the thumbnail, Shockingy RELIABLE, especially given one of the rule of thumbs you need to do with an esprit turbo, is to actually wait a moment and let the engine run for a little longer after going somewhere and parking to let the gasses out of the turbo so it doesnt backfire on the next start up
Reminds me of the time I found a black and gold Essex Turbo Esprit. Super excited raced to the dealer, money ready. Last thing was a test drive. Then found out I did not fit in it at all. Too tall. 💔

Once someone dives that deep mechanically at presale then most times you are determined to convince yourself to buy it. I enjoyed the Esprit content - but then I am biased. 😀

@Grifa Harry is a multi millionaire with an extensive list of cars that are all kept in top top condition. Most lotus cars are not, the only good thing about them is that they handle really well but on a whole they’re pretty crap

An S3/4 Esprit V8 is my dream Lotus. I'm a bit larger than you (more than a bit side-to-side) and I don't think I would fit in a series 1-2 car.
