In all my years of playing guitar, this is still one of the most satisfying riffs to play on an unfathomably loud setup. The open E interspersing the octave chords in a constant strum while dampening everything else just comes really naturally to this song. I love it.

By the way, the song is a critique of the music industry - which Billy is still doing to this day. They were kind of calling out the drive by record companies to create the next BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD, as well as the willingness of a lot of bands to just go along with it, regardless of the personal cost.
They were doing that in Golden Age of music....which changed into Pro Tools, Autotune, and artists being paid half-pennies for streams instead of just being underpaid on album royalties. Hilarious to think now about.

Yes! This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Lex nailed it again! She said the guitar riff is so “rumbly” and “fuzzy” … the rumble is because they’re droning the open low E string the entire time and playing over it. And it’s awesome that you said “fuzzy” because this particular type of distortion effect is literally called fuzz. Haha I don’t know if you already knew that or not but you’re right on, once again. He actually stacked a bunch of fuzz pedals together to get this sound, and it’s my favorite fuzz tone ever. Keep it up guys, I love listening to music with you!
"Siamese Twin" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" are some of the best the 90s managed to cook up, and that's say a lot because the 90s were a stupidly prolific time. It was a time when there was plenty of money floating around, and before people started just stealing everything. So labels were willing to throw lots of stuff at the wall to see what would stick. the 70s were a similar sort of situation in many ways, and both decades were incredibly diverse and productive musically.
Smashing Pumpkins is one of those bands that's perhaps one of the greatest of the 90s yet doesn't get nearly as much recognition as other 90s bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots. In my opinion, the best way to experience music is to just listen to it. No screen in your face. No imagery. Lyric subtitles are often incorrect, and music videos take away the aspect of interpretation. Usually, it's better to let the listener formulate their perception of what the song is on their own. I'm a songwriter. And sometimes people would ask me "what's that song about?". I used to give them the real answer. But I learned that wasn't what's best. Music can mean different things to different people, but the sentiment is usually the same. A shared memory of emotion- a connection.
Lex's comment about the riff is spot on. Sometimes the lyrics are too abstract/nonsense/personal to get any meaning from, so the riff is what carries the song. I've never understood what this song what about, but it didn't matter, I still love it. This is such a quality start to an iconic album. Siamese Dream is in my top 15. Something I listen to when I feel like I need to break out from what I'm doing. A change of perspective. A type of band that speaks to my soul when things are obscure and I'm unsure. Not depressed but seeking something from yesterday. Something I missed.

Smashing Pumpkins bassist D'arcy Wretzky briefly dated Richard Patrick, lead vocalist of the band Filter. His obsession and fixation on her is basically manifested in most of the songs on Filter's "Title of Record" album. The song "Miss Blue" is directly about her and she sang additional vocals on the song "Cancer". By the way, don't mind me, I know I'm late for the party. I'm just a new sub back tracking through all your previous reactions. I am SERIOUSLY impressed at the sheer amount of songs you've reacted to.
It's really cool to see Lex react to the music with this song. The song has a really long intro, and you can see her getting more and more into it as each little layer is added until she's completely hooked in. This is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song, and the only way to listen to it is if you're in the mood to blast it.
I really never count Smashing Pumpkins as one of my favorite bands, but I love this song and it would barely crack my Top 10 Smashing Pumpkins songs list. Truly a great and unique band and I can agree more with Lex on the guitar. I cranked this up as soon as I heard the intro.
Thid song sold me the first time I heard this song, never heard of them before, what really makes this music so good is the way corgan sings to the music he sings at times so soothing but knows when to intensify his vocals, never really heard a singer that has approached it like him, and completely compliments their sound, absolutely one of the greatest bands
@@mercurymachines4311 I really like the performance of Hummer they did on the Oceania live DVD too. Bit fuller-sounding than the album cut, and just kinda perfectly comes together at that point (oddly, quite far into the set where you'd expect a bit of a dip but instead it's the peak). Cherub Rock is of course the obvious choice. Never got the lyrics right until I saw this video, they're a bit more interesting than I'd not-really-thought-about.
In the beginning of the song, you have all the instruments coming together. And when they all fall in, It's like they're giving birth to something. It's like it has a heart beat. Granted, I was born in 85 so I grew up with this kind of music. But I would call it "The Echoes of Heaven." There's a reason they called it "Cherub Rock".

Same. Top Tier 👌🏻🖤🔥✌🏻
Some of the best guitar-driven rock ever recorded!!! So glad you guys did this one!
"LET ME OUT!!!"
💯😎
This was mescaline and liquid acid music back in the early 90's. Hydro shrooms were in play as well.
Whenever I get this song in the car I turn it up, and I don’t get out until it’s over.
Blast this whole album! It’s a no skip.
yeah siamese dream was my #1 album in 94 along with ill communication. oh & gang starr...
That smile on Lex's face says it all!!! You guys need to listen to the whole album Siamese Dream that this song is on. Still one of the best albums ever!!!
Wow, SUUUUUCH a good album.
On top of Cherub Rock, I recommend:
"Quiet"
"Today"
"Hummer"
"Rocket"
"Disarm"
"Soma"
"Geek U.S.A."
"Mayonaise"
"Spaceboy"
"Silverfuck"
"Sweet Sweet"
"Luna"
According to Billy Corgan it was about the indie rock scene in Chicago and bands selling out and going to major labels. Keep up the reviews! Cheers!
She was feeling it 😅
"Hipsters unite" Heh I did not know most of these lyrics. But this album Siamese Dream was BIG. Smashing Pumpkins had a great sound in concery and on record. Even tho I don't much like Billy and his voice. He played gnarly guitar. I think his other band(s) might be good too
Man... I heard this song for the first time GET THIS ☺️at the listening station at TOWER RECORDS on West End Ave Nashville Tennessee (RIP😞). It blew my head off my body. I swear I stood there and listened to it about ten more times in a row.
Now when I hear it all those feelings of the 90s coming flooding back. Taking road trips to nowhere with my friends. Eating awesome Asian food at the only Asian restaurant in Nashville at the time(International Market RIP) ...running into a buddy outside smoking a cigarette, who happens to have a J.
So we go to his house get smoked out. 5 hours come and go...lots of NBA JAM and TEKKEN 🕹Linda and Jodie swing by and they’re going to see NuNu perform at MultiBob so we tag along have a 1/2 dozen beers 🥴and stumble home humming “Cherub Rock”
I miss the 90s
You'd love the whole album I'm sure, it's an absolute masterpiece. Geek USA incredibly. Theres an official live version on UA-cam which is amazing.
That's my favourite off the album, the one I keep going back to. :)
@@Torthrodhel awesome. It’s an incredible track 🤘🏻
@@Torthrodhel yeah that is a great live version of Hummer. I love that the Pumpkins play around with the live versions of some of their songs.
I LOVE LEX!!!! She knows what's up. This is one of those songs that defined my youth.
Lex's first time wrapped in the blanket of "rumply fuzz" that is Siamese Dream. I love it.
Lex is the best reactor out there.
great live version on youtube, too. the pumpkins live, for the record release party. they are all young and just rock the hell out of this song
Epic is the word to use for this album, a epic masterpiece!
