Autumn Arrives At Our 1840s Cottage on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, Scotland - Ep37

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the 'Skye-Lifers' see the first signs of autumn appearing, despite the heatwave taking place across the country!
Sarah is back out foraging for some immune system boosting ingredients in the hedgerow, to keep away the cold in the winter months ahead and in the process, we invent a new cocktail...
Plus, we visit a local pottery and possibly the best decorated cafe on the island - recently refurbished by Banjo Beale on the BBC show 'Designing The Hebrides'. Maybe we can get some tips for decor inside our cottage!

Good luck to the potters! Did anyone else know rosehips as ""itchy coos"? NO idea about the 'coos' bit....
I remember calling them itchy coos ha ha
Happy Sunday everyone 😊 best day of the week when LTSL uploads ❤
I can’t belive this is episode 37!!! It’s been such a wonderful journey!
Can't beat home made syrup, the pottery shop view was beautiful. Enjoy your visit to Willie's mum x
Thank you for taking us along on your visit to the Skio pottery studio. Daisy, our mini dachshund, who currently resides in Far North Queensland, will be eating and drinking from their beautifully crafted pet bowls soon 💕 we’ll be matching her bowls with coffee mugs in the not too distant future. Hello to Willie, Sarah and Jack Spaniel from 🇦🇺 xx
P.S. Happy birthday to Willie’s Mum 🎊 🎉😊
Yet another truly superb video. Each week there is a noticeable uplift in quality. The filming, editing and most importantly the content is wonderful. I’m sure I’ll be leaving a similar comment next week. Thank you.
Aww thanks so much!! That means the world to us to hear 😊
Showing us around on Skye is a great way to promote your wonderfull island!
Jack Spaniels is a gorgeous boy!!!!😊
Skye is such a beautiful island. Kudos to both of you for promoting the local cuisine and crafts. I was on the island several years ago and would love to go back there.
Can just picture sarah as a bronze age maiden (celt or pict?) gathering the elderberries and rosehips for the family! That pottery looks amazing. Your obviously both creative, imaginative people by nature. Sarah and her art, willie and his music and now wanting to branch out into pottery. 🙂x
Tho they didn't have access to sugar back then - or lemons - to preserve it. Must've been pretty sour!
Love the pottery work that couple does. Fantastic view they have. Neat to see the sea eagles from your house. Great that you can create this berry syrup, sounds good. I enjoyed the video. 👍
Hello Willie and Sarah and Jack! Waving from the Isle of Wight. Can you see me? 😆
Small communities that like to help each other are such rare gems these days. Happy belated birthday to Willies Mum!
Great footage as always, loved the visit to the pottery shop. Could you please 🙏 mark all the wonderful places you frequent on Skye onto a map. I have every confidence that Sarah could create a spectacular colourful map 😊. Thank you for another joyful blog. ❤
Ah great idea! We are currently working on getting our own website, so we will definitely try and make that a part of it 👍
Loved the visit to Skio Pottery with its amazing views and cool pottery design work. I'm getting a (hopeful) feeling Sarahs next painting will be a Sea Eagle. 😊👍
What a cute calm pottery shop! ❤
I love the vibe I feel when I drink coffee from a beloved handmade mug. Skye is an awesome place❣Working with clay is a practice makes perfect thing & if you like the feel of the clay it is a great way to ground your energy. Who knows? It could be a benefit to your music & Sarah might enjoy painting or etching the pottery. oh, maybe a longer distance camera lens is in order? The eagle's roost isn't going to get any closer, after all. 🥰 The weather is jacking around with us globally we really need each other to survive❣
When you mentioned that jack would soon be lying down on the carpet, he turned in the direction of the red Persian rug as if to say - you mean that carpet Dad? Hmmm, yeah, it looks ok I guess.

Comedy Gold!
This spaniel has amazing comedic timing.
Mr Spaniels incredible sense of timing, although not immediately apparent given his usual on-screen persona of “boisterous pup”.
Is clearly and cleverly demonstrated here, for all the world to see (well, not ALL the world, but at least a few thousand people from each of the continents)
This is the true genius, skill and acting range that we have come to expect from Mr Jack Spaniels (RADDA)
The future is bright for this up and coming canine star.
Rumours abound that a spinoff show featuring the young actor may be in the works.
Watch this space.

Ahaha BEST REVIEW EVER 🙌
@@livingtheskyelife I’m glad you enjoyed it. I had such fun writing it.
What a lovely episode! I immediately went to Skio’s website and sadly they don’t ship to the US. Just have to visit one day! Thank you for the delightful Sunday 😊
Yay, I love Sundays when you post and I can see more of Jack! You're my favourite UA-camrs by far! ❤❤
This is the absolute perfect series for my Sundays. Lovely Sarah foraging, Jack Spaniel helping, Willie’s beautiful music, and the amazing video footage. It sure brings back memories of our once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Isle of Skye several years ago.
Loved to see the vintage tableware in the cafe, I buy and sell vintage goods and ceramics are my favourite so this episode was fantastic
Ah yeah we love it too! Such a good match to the decor
I love how excited you get about the local wildlife. How cool to be so close to such a majestic bird! Sadly i missed the elderberries this year, and then found last year's syrup had gone off! Bah!
Ah no! That was how we felt about the elderflowers - we just kept missing opportunities to pick them
@livingtheskyelife you've got us picking mushrooms for the first time ever today Thing is we're too scared to eat them, I checked using photos on an app and they're supposedly horse mushrooms and fairy ring mushrooms. Wish you were nearby to get your opinion.😊
@@jtre5387 don't eat them unless you are 100% sure, especially if you are a newbie. Best get an experienced forager with you next time! Honestly my friend who is experienced at foraging poisoned me last year! The only ones I pick are Penny Buns and Oyster mushrooms because I know for definite what they are, and where they grow annually!
That’s great that you’re interested in mushrooms, but we agree with what the other commenter said - never ever eat any wild mushrooms without being 100% certain of ID.
Willie is a very experienced forager and even he doesn’t go near about 90% of the mushrooms we see when we’re out. Please don’t take any risks with wild mushrooms - it could be the last mistake you ever make.
@@livingtheskyelifeunderstood, I'll try and find a local experienced forager to check against. We took photos and used an app but its not enough😊
Sarah,
You might consider putting a hook on the top of the Foraging Stick, to hook branches or whatever
closer to you.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Wow, morning coffee and Sea Eagles……I’m getting on the road! X
Oh my gosh, you guys are so close to 50,000 subs already! How amazing is that! Love that pottery, the black set in particular. 🤩🦅
Such amazing talented people on skye, skio pottery was awesome, loved to see you make your cordial, looks lovely.... Almost as good as Willie's can of Irn Bru lol, great video as always, enjoy your evening guys 👍♥️
Cullin Royal, the life blood of Skye, that looks fantastic.
Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
Merry of soul, she sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye…❤
Loved the pottery and very excited to see they ship to Europe! It is going to be a Skye Christmas this year!
Hi guys and woof 😁👋, it simply gets better and better.. Content is so well balanced and flows perfectly, I must add as your both walking and filming it's seamless it's just great TV. 10/10..was great having a stroll with Sarah bones and Mr jack.. The views are amazing everywhere.. It's like being in another world!!?.. 03,49 here and the rains battering down here in Dunfermline. Sea Eagles, pottery lessons, picture perfect views.. I could go on and on.. I was singing the wee skye life tune at work other day.. You have now got more viewers.. Well so much to say but thanks your all great people. Till next instalment.
Cheers, Rab 🍺😊🥂😁🥃🍷🍻🍻!
Ps. That cullian sauce is a winner.. Amaz. 👍👍🍹🍹
Aww thanks so much!! We really appreciate your kind words 😊
Just lovely pottery, what a view. Think you should arrange a summer exhibition, you on guitar, the pottery and Sara’s paintings. And coffee!
So, Willie. Give some thought to the idea that working with clay might be grounding. You don't have to give up being hyperactive early. You just might be able to focus when you want to and unleash that hyperactivity when you want to. Also, I believe you are right about it taking time to get experience in pottery and develop your own style. Maybe you could "apprentice" with the lovely folks at Skio to see if it really does call you. I really think your view could give theirs a run for the money! So, just some thoughts - you do you.
Elderberry wine! Divine. Lovely
A Cuillin Royale with champagne in the Highlands. HEAVEN.
What I love is the fact you can’t hear traffic or planes when in the woods. We live in the south east and are under the Gatwick flight path and our ancient woodland is bisected by roads.
An absolute highlight of the week. Skio Pottery is as cool as can be. Good on them for what they've built up. Good on you for highlighting these excellent places. I had seen the cafe on that programme a while ago. Good to see it doing well.
Lovely video as always thank you. Happy Sunday everyone have a wonderful week
Thank you, and you, too 😊
Wonderful! Here (Denmark) we use a fork for getting the elderberries off the stalks. :)
Cheers Sarah and willie Love this new content your mums must be so proud of you both and they must be you biggest viewers.
Your Cuillan Royale looks amazing, Sarah! Gorgeous colour. I envy you being able to forage for your ingredients. There are too many bear around here, particularity at this time of year, which makes it far too dangerous. Unfortunately, I have to resort to store bought remedies. I Love pottery! Your mugs are lovely, and what a joy being able to sea the sea eagles! Once again, thank you for sharing your beautiful island!
Oh gosh - yes please don’t put yourself in danger of bears!! We are lucky to not have any large predators like that here
Lovely. As always, your production value is aces. Have you done a drawing a blackberry bunch, Sarah? And seriously, how does potter Katie get anything done with that view?!
Yes! I have painted brambles 😊
Love that you feature local businesses and artisans. Everything feels and looks simply magical through your videos. It's like my little escape. 💙✨️
That view has to be the best working view in Britain , that said been a lorry driver I see some awesome views myself, I also see some real bad ones too . Autumn has arrived here in Staffordshire, never stopped raining all weekend, but I absolutely love it definitely my favourite time of year .
Hi Guys! We love your stuff and have been watching since a long time ago on your individual channels! We miss the "She Walks, She Paints" content a bit! I purchased one of your pieces of art, Sarah, for my husband a while back! And we love Jack Spaniels as well. (We have 3 dogs and a kitty.) It's funny; on Sunday's my husband will announce "Skye Life dropped!" and we'll gather in the living room and watch! Have a wonderful fall!
Aww thanks so much!! We do miss the SWSP stuff a bit too, but hopefully we will have more time for walking and painting now, after our hectic first year 😅
Yikes! Today is literally "Elderberry Jam Making Day" in our house in Northern Illinois in the US! [Old school idea: put the Elderberries in the freezer to make raking them off easier.] Love sharing the adventures with y'all and finding the common yet amazing things folks all 'round do this time of year. Harvests and beautiful leaves making my smile this morning. Thanks for sharing.
We have more elderberries in the freezer waiting to be made into another batch of syrup 😊
Rose hips are such an amazing source of vitamin C that here in NY, it's darn near impossible to grow them because deer munch them.
Fell in love with Skye and Scotland last June when we were there 😍Such an amazing place 🙌Hope to be back someday 🤞🤞
A really great video, what a gorgeous view at Skio pottery - and speaking of pottery, am I the only ancient viewer who recognised a piece of vintage “Hornsea”? Your soup bowl Sarah, some time back in the 60s I thought that as cool as Willie’s new espresso mug!
No you were not the only one to notice the Hornsea pottery bowl. I think the design is called Bronte. We had a full set many years ago collected from the pottery which was only 7miles away from where we live. Sadly no longer there but the museum in the town has some pieces in it's collection and a local artist has created some work based upon it.
@@judithtate3387 I had the tea and coffee storage “jars” and so wanted the whole set, I had forgotten the pattern name. I visited the town once with my grandparents many, many years ago. Thank you for your message.
4:16 it’s nice to see that Jack Spaniels acquired his own foraging stick! 🤣
The foraging was quite the success! I’m so glad you’re adding in visits to other islander artisans; I think any promotion of local craft persons can only be a benefit to the island as a whole.
Looking forward to seeing all the changes the incoming seasons bring to your corner of the world. Cheers and ATB.
This JamesWilliams592 that replied to my comment (if it is , in fact, still here.) has joined three days ago, and all his comments are hitting on female comments. We need to shut down creeps like this.
Sorry, we just picked up on this. Blocking him now. Thanks for flagging this.
Willy needs to add on a crook of some sort to the foraging pole.. we have one on ours and its great to pull down high branches without harming the trees... keep the videos coming. Greetings from Portugal
What a lovely cafe and Jack was very well behaved. He is a real cutieee!!
Another great video! I loved seeing Sarah foraging for berries and making her delicious concoction. I’ve seen elderberry syrup used to cure colds, but I’ve never seen anyone make it. It looks like a really yummy all purpose syrup. You should stay bright-eyed and bushy-tailed all winter long now! 😉 I was so excited to see your calendar.. I had to preorder it right away… can’t wait to get it! Have a great week! Give Jack Spaniels some pets from me! ❤
Loving the videos. A must watch for our household. Love the She Walks, She Paints content too.
We used to collect rosehips as children in the 1950s. We were paid 3d a pound. I'm confessing now that we used to sneak up on our friends and put the seeds down their tops😆. Sunday isn't complete until I've watched the three of you. Thank you.
Really nice video, I was on vacation and could not get on Facebook- loved coming home to this! Thank you! 🐑
Fantastic video Love the Jack spaniels.👍
Always look forward to your videos. loved watching the scenery go by as you drove to Firth. The walk i n the forest (even though no mushrooms )was almost magical. The carpet of green moss almost looks like a real carpet.
Also - i love the way Jack Spaniels turns his head when you talk to him.
We love your contents and cannot wait to see more...
Thanks so much!
Shepherds crook would be good for that job of collecting 🙂
“Elder Hip Spice” 😊
Hi guys absolutely loved this video, so much of things l love. Skio pottery is right up my street, their work is stunning, another place on my list to do for my visit. Another cafe too. Jeez not sure if l will get time to visit them all. Im lucky to see Sea Eagles quite often here, but not grazing as you saw them, what a treat. Just love wee Jack, thanks for sharing the Skye life........Alioban
The pottery was so beautiful. I have five Elderberry plants in my garden, and I make syrup as well. I use honey instead of sugar, its really good. Thank you for sharing your journey. I enjoy watching.
Thanks Lisa!
The best channel on youtube....by far. Thanks so much. ❤
Aww thanks so much!!
Oh to live on the Isle of Skye! I am blessed with having been there.
Everything about this video was amazing, cannot get enough from you 3 💕💙🧡
Love to see your gathering walk Sarah, the cordial/syrup looks wonderful! Lovely new mugs, what a great pottery place and agreed about the view, WOW!! Sure love the warm weather this time of year, Autumn is my favourite 🍂🌞
Sundays are complete when we watch your great video. Loved the pottery! Agree that the view is amazing. I can't imagine the feeling of being there all the time. Jack is his adorable self as per usual. ❤
Hi guys, Pats for Jack spaniel.
Cool, little pottery shop! Loved the view How cool to do your own cordial. Looks like it came out terrific. What a gorgeous color.
That was a great Vlog I really really enjoyed it Sending love, Sarah, Willie & and Mr. Jack spaniels.
From LIZ out in California 💜🤟🏻😎🐬🇺🇸
Thanks Liz! So glad you liked it 😊
Loved the pottery visit & yes agree fabulous view the mugs you chose are very nice
The foraging berry syrup looked amazing 👍
Great video. Made me want to go back to Skye. Used to holiday around there as a child and when our kids were wee…
I just read they cut down that old Sycamore tree by Hadrians wall. Nuts. Never knew I could eat those berries, gottah get a book on this stuff.🇬🇧🇺🇸
It’s awful about the tree - it was such an iconic place 😢 Definitely read up about foraging - it’s amazing the things you can find. Elderberries shouldn’t be eaten raw though - they are quite bitter by themselves and can cause stomach upsets.
The syrup looks amazing! Good for you for finding all the berries and rosehips outside your doorstep. Lovely episode!
The term for removing berries or currants from the stem is "strigging" 🙃 Great video again, thanks x
Ooh love it!
It's always a treat to watch your videos with our evening meal on a Sunday. Very hot and humid here, too. 27C today and 28C is in the forecast for tomorrow. It's a bit of a shock after 3 weeks in Scotland and Ireland. On another topic, I had no idea elderberries were so tiny. Sara's Syrup...if it keeps you both healthy all winter...could become Sara's Super Syrup. BTW, we're getting our Highland Coo print framed and ready for display in our home. We love your work, Sara! Hi to Willie, happy birthday to his Mum, and pats/woof/meow to Jack from the 2 and 4 legged crew here in Canada.
Aww amazing! So glad you enjoyed your trip over here 😊
I just love the 3 of you. Thank you so much for your videos ❤❤
Such a fantastic video. I don’t think your syrup will last the winter as it’s so amazing and can be used in so many of your concoctions. Guess you will have to forage again! The pottery interview was wonderful and what a delightful couple AND the view - WOW! See you next time.
Thanks so much!! We have already gathered some more berries to make more 😋
Sarah your skin is looking incredible! Have you switched something up? This exhausted mum needs to know… 😅
Aww thanks so much! Maybe it’s the Skye climate agreeing with me 😅
I'm adopting y'all as honorary grand kids. Im of Socts heritage and I'm pretty good a understanding the accents.
I hate autocorrect 😢
What I was getting at as I think it might be racial memory. I just so look forward to seeing y'all every Sunday. From Alabama, USA.
Another wonderful week on Skye.
I got ahold of Skye Skyns to order a skin for my chair and a vest for my son if they have one in Harris tweed that will fit him. He’s a big guy.
In spite of the big dinner my neighbour cooked my mouth was watering seeing your cordial making.
Have a safe journey to Fife.
The sea eagle was great to watch. They have such sharp vision.
I had a meeting with a giant golden eagle on the west side of Cape Breton years ago that I swear was at least four feet tall.
Her head beak to nape of her neck was as long as a German Shepherd.
At first spotting I thought it was a person sitting on the cliff I was walking towards.
Then it took off and landed about ten feet from me.
It was huge!
I was stumbling over big rocks and didn’t want to trip.
It eventually took off and spiraled up into the sky until it disappeared.
Its’ wingspan was 8 to 10 feet.
I’ve never found an exact match in any bird book.
If only I had a cell phone.
Wow amazing encounter!! Sometimes it’s better not to have a camera so you can just enjoy the special moment 😊
We had elderberries in PA where I grew up.... bushes, not trees. And yes, great for sore throat.
I live in PA and I was just asking my husband if we had elderberries around here…. I thought I’d seen them but they weren’t trees, they were bushes…. Thanks for the confirmation! 😉
I hope you are ready for the winter with all the plants ☺I don't know if in Isle of Skye this flower grows, but as a great medicine is also plantain - syrup or even tea.
Sweet vlog! Always interesting! Yesterday I made some Fire Cider which is great for cold and flu season! We use elderberry here too. I used to have elderberries at our cottage, but we’ve sold it! Luckily there is a health food store nearby to buy some elderberry syrup! Enjoy autumn in your part of our world! Hugs from Canada!
Delightful! I really enjoy the foraging and home brewing.
same regarding the weather here in southern Ontario ...as a autumn-person, I'm rather disappointment, lol!
Cordial looks delicious…I make cordials too with fruit from my garden….various combinations of rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, brambles, loganberries, honey berries, redcurrants and blackcurrants…along with lemon and ginger…….sounds a lot but we only have a few of each plant …lovely with gin too as well as Prosecco…
Ask Willie to put a hook on the end of your stick it could be very handy when foraging. Lovely walk. The pottery is beautiful. I did pottery years ago., not as good as this. I think Jack Spaniels has the death stare done to perfection until you hand over some food.
You guys seem to be settling in well to life on Skye. Beard is coming along well Willie.
So much wonderful content today. I must visit Skip pottery next time we’re up there.
Loved the vlog! Beautifully done. The syrup looks amazing!
Simply gorgeous 😊
Dear LTSL couple.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! Literally everything in this episode looks really, really great (maybe excluding the grandfather beard 😁👅😘). Having seen the stained glass window in the unbelievably wonderful café, I definitely go with your taste/opinion. So when will you put in a door with stained glass in your studios? 😁 ;-) The back room could really win with a little bit more natural light. You can even try to make your own stained glass. Would definitely make a good DIY episode.
I wish you a nice journey and your mom a nice birthday party.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards, luck and especially health to all involved people, animals and plants.
Aww thanks so much!! We will have to visit some antique shops and keep an eye out for anything that would work. We would love to make changes to the byre studios as we go along 😊
Love the sea eagles 🦅 thanks
You guys are so brave and adventurous! If I were young I’d love to move to the north of Scots…just gudonya!
Loved the pottery - what a great view! And Sarah’s syrup needs a good looking Victorian cure label!
Ahaha yes! A Skye Life quack cure label 🤣
Blackberry syrup is lovely on vanilla ice cream or pancakes! 😋 We would enjoy rose hip tea in the winter. Never really thought of adding them to a syrup. Do let us know how it tastes. Beautiful place you live in. TFS
It tastes really good! Quite ribena-y with a festive kick from the ginger and cinnamon. We might try some plain rosehip syrup later in autumn
Hi , another lovely relaxing time watching you both , loved the pottery shop, talented people .
I love birds of prey , & my dream would be to see an Eagle , maybe one day .
🙏.
I love the fact you champion other craftspeople on Skye .thank you once again for taking us on your journey
lovely relaxing sunday watch......thanks all xx
