  • Let's go back in time to 2009 when the Totally Home homemaker shoping centre (mall) existed at Bella Vista in Norwest business park. Now it's a Sydney Metro train station.
I like Abandoned Mall videos, so this is probably the closest we have to that in Sydney.

I *strongly* encourage everyone to take their camera out and capture your general area. You never know when it might be gone.
I live(d) on Fort Myers Beach, Florida. In late 2022, Hurricane Ian came to town, with a 15'-20' storm surge and scraped most buildings off the map. Those which were still standing were badly damaged. Even on the mainland, many buildings were damaged and destroyed.
Much of my childhood is gone. Parks, restaurants, piers, etc., all destroyed. In some cases things survived, only to have developers and city planners decide they wanted all new everything rather than refurbish.

I strongly recommend this as well. My motto is, if the thought of taking a picture crosses my mind, then I absolutely need to take a picture. Before this realization I had a decent amount of photos but interestingly they're all of major events, none of the mundane things that I would see every day until they didn't exist which interesting are the things I find more interesting and nostalgic. Also just super useful for a lot of practical stuff like 'wait, was this always like this?'.

Yep. Where I used to live we used to shop at a strip mall near sort of end of town and then it would sort of open up into rural again. Just as this transition went through there was a beautiful old barn made of terra-cotta tiles? Beautiful smooth brick. Right before we left they tore it down it’s empty for a few years and then they’ve built some thing on it and I think it burned down or something. Don’t think we ever got pictures of it although there’s at least 20 rolls of film in our refrigerator that need to get developed.
Where we moved to we used to drive by this corner with an old wood barn on it it got knocked down fencing got put up and it turned into a used car lot where they just parked the used cars on the grass or sometimes heavy equipment auction.

Google maps have so far kept their archive history for 15 years. Something like that will be kept until that exact area that they have mapped is redeveloped, and google needs to re-map. You can actually choose when to go back, but how long they will keep it isn't set in stone. For now you can go as far back as 15 years. @@EEVblog2 This may not answer the question that was asked, but here in the UK such a place would be a retail park/outlet, with the distinction being that the goods being sold in outlets are primarily clothes. It would appear that the distinction made in Australia, a "homemaker centre" is exclusive to your neck of the woods! Congratulations. No retail park that I am familiar with is contains solely "homemaker" shops, but even those where it is the primary focus make no further distinction and likely contain some other service; be it food, a cinema, some card shop that has no other home, and so on.

For some reason Google Maps makes it incredibly easy to view historical streetview imagery (the "See more dates" in the top left) but to my knowledge completely impossible to view historical satellite imagery, while Google Earth Pro desktop app is the other way round. I regularly have to open both of them when I want to look at old stuff like this.

If you download the desktop version of Google earth you can also get a historic satellite picture of a lot of areas. Not as good as street view or as high resolution of maps updated in the last few years, but it is a great resource for seeing how the world has changed. Some major European cities even have archival 1940s/50s photos taken after the war.

Its funny how for Cherrybrook its all green areas and medium density, yet no clear indication of any local shops permitted... I presume everyone is expected to take the Metro to Castle Hill for some milk or the morning paper... I don't think the handful of small commercial units at the station will cut it. Plus the bus service North from Castle Hill and Cherrybrook is next to useless, last bus our way is like around 8.30pm!
Its also funny its in the most 'greened' area. What a lot of people don't realise is quite a few trees can be removed with the stroke of a pen. The planners know this well.
