    Thank you so much for making this video! My starter went out on me a week ago and have been looking at videos how to replace my starter (MK4 Jetta, 1.8t 5spd). My new one came in yesterday. I was going to bump start my car and drive it to my dad's shop but seeing that I can replace it from the top helps out a lot! I'm just going to replace it in my yard cause I have all the tools I need. I liked how you listed the tools needed and the torque specs. Great job on the video! Very informative.

      Glad you liked it! I'm sure you know that I've got a whole playlist of other videos for MK4's, and I've got a backlog of more that I'll be adding. Good luck with the starter replacement, and let me know if you have any questions!

      Update: starter replacement was a success. Your video gave me the confidence of doing this repair where my car is. It fires right up no problem. My back is killing me though lol
      I'll check out the playlist! Thanks again!

      Thanks for the sub and the comment! This is exactly what I'm going for with my videos - no unnecessary fluff. Comment back and let me know how you make out with the MK6. I don't have any experience with newer VWs, but it would be cool knowing if it's similar enough to help you out.

    Great video 👍🏼 . I have a 2005 VW golf GTI 5 speed. Is there a reference or part number for the starter you can give me. I looked online and I’m not sure which one to purchase thank you

      Glad you liked the video! I used BOS-SR0425N, but don't go off me for part numbers. I'd go to the FCP Euro website, type in your cars information, and see what they say is compatible.

    Hey man great video, I followed every step and even Re watched the video after RE INSTALLING the starter 2x, because it makes a screeching noise when I try to start my car :(
    Any idea as to what it could be ? Hope reinstalling it a 3rd time is the charm lol

      Hmmm. I haven't had this issue with starter replacements on any car I've owned. I'd pull it and check the flywheel teeth for damage. You don't want to create a bigger problem for yourself.
      Is the starter new or re-man?

      Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you found it helpful! It's not a hard job, just have to know where to to work. Anything I fix I make a video for, so check out the mk4 playlist, or let me know if there is something you want to see and I could look into making it.

    What kinda of indicators did the vehicle give you to show that the starter was out. Mine started drove it to work went to go start it a little while later, it will light up like it’s gonna start but nothing happens

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  8 місяців тому

      Mine wasn't disengaging until a few seconds after the car started. It sounds like the noise when you crank a car that's already running. Yours sounds like the starter could be locked up, or your battery is bad. If the battery is fine, it's probably time to replace the starter.

    Hey Steve! Got a quick question for ya, i have an 02 jetta 1.8t 5 speed, and the car ran fine, i shut it off to run inside work and grab my delivery, came back out maybe 5 min later and it wont start or crank, battery is a new interstate agm. Any ideas for what happened? Also am low on fuel, and not sure if i hear the fuel pump or not.

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  7 місяців тому

      A problem with your fuel pump would keep the car from starting, but it would still crank. When your car shut off did you lose all electrical, or was the cluster and other lights on and just the car not cranking over?

    I bought a 2002 beetle with the starter removed. I think I have it figured out except for the positive battery cable. Do you have a video for replacing the positive battery cable and tray?

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  Рік тому

      @Jerry Brogdon mr.fixxitt2021 I don't currently have a video, but I might be able to whip one up. When you say tray, do you mean the thing the battery sits on, or the fuse block on top of the battery that the positive cable runs to?

    • @JerryBrogdonmrfixxitt
      @JerryBrogdonmrfixxitt Рік тому

      @Steve's Garage I'm talking about the thing that the battery sits in. I may be being too much of a perfectionist wanting it to be now as it was when new. I bought it with the starter, battery and tray (the metal shelf thing that the battery sits on), the plastic piece that shields two sides of the battery, it being bent at 90° and having clips that the fuse box mounts with, all have been totally removed. The positive and negative battery cables, and fuse box disconnected and hanging - and I have to install all these things and never have seen them in place to know how it goes back together. I've almost decided to put it back on with the best fit and working properly will be good enough. Also, someone rung a stud off in the turbo. Can heat be used to help remove this?

    • @StevesGarage
      @StevesGarage  Рік тому

      @Jerry Brogdon mr.fixxitt2021 The battery tray is held down with 4 bolts to the metal platform piece. There should be little nuts welded on the back of the metal platform that you tighten down to. Sometimes if the car is really rusty that can all be in pretty rough shape or even nonexistent. As for the shields around the battery, those are dependent on the battery. I've had some batteries where the pieces didn't _really_ fit because it wasn't quite the right dimensions. As long as you can get the battery held down to the tray with the small metal plate, and the top fuse block piece held down properly that's all you really need.

      Maybe you can try some penetrating oil? I know using my impact helped because it shocked it loose instead of constant pressure from a ratchet/breaker bar.
