  • 82-year-old jazz pianist Max Rose [Jerry Lewis] has lost his beloved wife of 65 years, Eva Rose. Attempting to settle into his new reality as widower with the support of his loving granddaughter, Annie Rose, he makes a troubling discovery in the form of an intimate inscription on a gift Eva received from another man.
With the help of new friends, he sets out on a quest to uncover the identity of this mysterious other man that walks him backwards through the timeline of his life, until he comes face to face with a surprising truth that deepens his understanding of his marriage and his life.
Max Rose is Jerry Lewis' last major starring role as an actor. It was also the final credit for Mort Sahl, and because it wasn't released in the U.S. until 2016, the last filmed role released in the U.S. for Dean Stockwell (he had an animated voiceover credit late in life).
    Stars:
    Jerry Lewis
    Dean Stockwell
    Kerry Bishe
    Kevin Pollak
    Fred Willard
    Illeana Douglas
    Claire Bloom
    Mort Sahl
    Edited for UA-cam ad standards
Played at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 as part of a salute to the work of Jerry Lewis. Didn't premiere in the US until 2016 at New York's Museum of Modern Art, on the occasion of Lewis' 90th birthday.

Tk you for posting my favourite kind of movie: “a nice pedestrian film”. A story of ordinary people living ordinary lives. No war, no car chases, no stock markets, no rape, no zombies, no aliens: Perfect ❣️❗️

Most wouldn’t agree but I thought this was one of Jerry Lewis best movies at age 90.

Thanks for the upload, it was very interesting seeing Jerry Lewis' final movie, made when he was around 89/90 years old. He acquitted himself well, especially considering his great age. It was a promising premise and a terrific cast too, so hugely disappointing that Daniel Noah's script and plot let it down. Alas it was thin, cliched stuff, and instantly forgettable.
Kevin Pollak is a great actor, but his talents were wasted in a badly under-written role. The father/son dynamic between him and Jerry Lewis didn't come over authentically as intended, because of the weak script. The scenes with Lewis and the other jazz-loving old timers in the retirement home, which were supposed to be so funny/moving, fell horribly, embarrassingly flat. And the final reveal when it came, was decidedly underwhelming - contrived, sentimental, and sadly all too predictable.
The comments here show some confusion about Jerry Lewis' age when he made 'Max Rose', his last film. It was released in the US on September 2nd 2016. Jerry Lewis died on August 20th 2017 aged 91, so he would have been 89/90 years old, when he filmed this.
'Max Rose' was also the final movie of two other cast members - Dean Stockwell who played Ben Tracey (Stockwell died on November 7th 2017, aged 85), and comedian and actor Mort Sahl who played Jack Murphy (Sahl died October 26th 2021, aged 94).
Incidentally, the late wife's name is spelled in the credits as 'Eva' - so why did everyone pronounce it 'Ava', as in Ava Gardner? That is not how 'Eva' is pronounced - it's an entirely different name!
I suspect when the famously curmudgeonly Jerry Lewis first mispronounced 'Eva' as 'Ava', no one on the crew had the balls to correct him, and instead other cast members were forced to say it the same way for consistency - just as no one asked Lewis to re-take the line he fluffed @ 39:30.
In response to the retirement home boss's question "How are you feeling Mr Rose?" he responds: "Wonderful - I'm in 'One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'".
The line as written, was of course: "Wonderful - I'm in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'". If someone had only mustered the courage to ask Jerry to re-take that line, without the superfluous word 'who', it might even have got a laugh!

You're welcome for the upload. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Your comment prompted us to research a little bit of the background so that we could update our movie description! Very good bit of info that this was indeed Mort Sahl's last role. For Jerry himself, the timeline seems a little more murky. While the movie premiered in the US on the occasion of Lewis' 90th birthday, it seems that the worldwide premiere had been in ever-Jerry-loving France at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 2013, which would have made him 86/87 when he filmed it. He also has a credit or two after this movie - but none of them lead roles - so i think we can safely say it was his last 'leading' role. This earlier production date also means it wouldn't be Stockwell's final role (we're seeing on the internet that he died in 2021, btw) as he had a slew of credits in 2014. However, outside of a voiceover role in 2021 - Max Rose would still be the final project of Stockwell's (and Lewis') to be released in the U.S.
