    Great comparison! It's neat to see the exact comparison between Student and Pro ranges. I wish I had had the Akademie paints when I started painting, instead of the Cotman...
    And I don't regret enabling you to buy that set, if only for the tin. It's worth it ;)

    hi Denise, I am so glad you did this comparison. I have the 12 akademie set and a dozen random horidam colors so I could not to a direct comparion. I think the reasom akademie is hard to get here us becayse a long time ago grumbacher bought rights to manufacture the schminke line of oaints in the usa and they developed the grumbacher academy line of paints still sold widely in the US. grumbacher and schminke are still distributed by the same company today (chartpak) so I reckon thesy might just be the same formula (one tube and the other in pans) to appeal to different markets as the grumbacher academy is excellent too.

    I live in Denmark and I found this akademie set yesterday for about 37$ for me that’s an ok price. It also came with a no 6 round da Vinci nova synthetic brush. I really wanted to try schmincke and the box is something that will make me happy every time I see it. I loved your review and your explanation on the colors. I do have some prima sets too and an old travel set from Van Gogh but with this new set I can fill up with extra pans from other brands and lines and get a nice set I think...I might watch more reviews to see what I wanna look for when I get to the capital next time.

    i recently got the 12 full pan set of akademie paints as a present from my mom (which i was SO excited about when i opened that amazon package aahh schmincke pans are just so beautiful) and of course immediately wanted to swatch them. since they come with a little swatch card ready to be painted on already, i thought id just use that to swatch. holy shit, schmincke do not do themselves favours by their included swatch cards lmao, the paper somehow managed to create backruns even with a tiny swatch, and layering is basically impossible on that paper. i was like "?????" when i tried it first, bc since im german, im no stranger to schmincke horadam colours and how beautiful and high quality they are, and i was confused. then i tried them on the cheap/affordable canson xl watercolor paper and they of course had no problem layering (some colors obv are more liftable than others but i mean i know the difference) and i of course got no backruns either. so yeah - whatever paper theyre using there, they should use something else cause if someone who has no clue abt watercolors uses them first time on that piece of paper, theyll think the colours are hard to work with or something.

    I just ordered a 2018 Schmincke Advent Calendar from SAA for about $27 usd with 23 Akademie and 1 Horadam, no tin. I own a 24 set of Horadam already and love them but I cherish them and feel like when I get the Akademie I can use them more. Thank you for this review, I am so excited! For anyone seeing this who want the deal it was cheaper for me to buy in GDP and let my bank convert. They also have awesome Hahnemuhle 100% cotton Expression blocks for about $14usd. Schminke Akademie is their Student line but color beautifully. Not available in the US because Akademie is a copyrighted word by Grumbacher, and they block any imports. Look for them in Japan, and you can find them with free shipping. Don't balk at buying these, they have a great price, and like the Video, it's hard to find any differance between both paint sets.

    This examination reminds me of my experience with Prismacolor Scholar (student grade) and Prismacolor Premiere (artist grade). I was annoyed to find out their are essentially the same pencils and I got the same results from each. It seems the Scholars are marketed to students with less fancy packaging. It makes me wonder if that's a similar case with the Schmincke paints, as well? It's hard to say without using them and getting the tactile feel, but based on watching you lay down the paint and the color representation, there is only a slight difference, that to many, I'm sure, wouldn't be severely noticeable. In a blind taste-test, I would know which was which! lol! Wonderful presentation and the camera angle was helpful! Cheers! :)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому +5

      Thanks Mark! it is super disappointing to hear about all the cases of student grade materials being the same product but rebranded. In this case, I think the Christmas tin was even better than the black one haha, but overall Akadamie do feel less pigmented, thought the difference is definitely slightly. I had fun with the puffin for patrons, and look forward to painting with them more!

      I use Horadam and Akademie regularly and the main difference I notice is how the Horadam rewet much more easily and I also have the impression that I am using up the Akademie ones much faster because Schmincke has this fancy way of filling up their artist's grade pans which they don't use for the student line... Akademie are definitely very good paints but not the same as Schmincke's artist grade paints.

      M.D. Campbell The difference will also be lightfast ratings - more fillers in student grade paints affects lightfast ratings so while colours may look similar, in reality they are less pigmented. I have the both prismacolour and the scholar, they are not the same imho, the scholar have more filler and are not as pigmented or creamy.

    I have a mix of artist and student grade watercolor paints in my palette, most of them are Van Gogh, but some artist-grade paints are worthy on their own, and I think Van Gogh's student quality to be mostly sufficient to be mixed with the artist grade ones, I have few colors from Rembrandt, Daniel Smith, and Holbein, and I don't think I need any more artist-grade colors that I'm satisfied having the Van Gogh version of. In the case of manufacturers selling high quality student paints, I think they're just 'great' manufacturing companies, sans few special colors. 😂

    • @InLiquidColor

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому +1

      Quality, I don't think so. There are a few general differences though. The one I mentioned in the video about the orientation of the clips, the smaller wells on the Meeden are larger and more useful for me, and the side with the smaller wells sits parallel to the surface on the Meeden without drooping. Overall, I actually prefer the functionality of the Meeden for those reasons, but I couldn't resist such a cute tin :D

    The only thing i can say is that if your looking at vegan watercolor, schmincke is a line to avoid. While I prefer them I do always let people know. Not just due to ivory black but also the oxgall.
    A second quick note. You can fix the drooping flap by using a pin to push the wire out grab the end take it out and fully separate the flap from the box. Take the wire and gently bend it 10 or 15 degrees then push it back in lining the flaps back up. That will add the tension back and push the flap up.

    Camera Shake: Is there a nearby table you could clamp the microphone and camera to and then cantilever the camera over to your work area so you don't have to purchase a separate wall mount? This would obviously depend on how far the camera and microphone boom reach for you.

      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому +1

      @kvr8286 6 років тому

      Oh bummer. Don't suppose the edge of your window sill is large enough to clamp it to then either. Oh well. I'm sure you'll work something out. (if you're a DIY sort then I feel like that this would be a project for the PVC tubing aisle at Home Depot, or maybe that's just my desire to make something out of all the bits and bobs in that aisle talking...) :-P

      Clueless Morgan my window is really odd here and goes down to a few inches from the floor and lacks a window sill at all. Oh the joys of apartment life. My tentative plan was to get a piece of wood and drill a wall mount camera holder (like for security cameras) into that, then attach it to the wall somehow. I do remember seeing the pvc stands a while back though. I'll see if I can find a video on that again.

      It no longer available unless you can find it on eBay or similar sites.

      You can purchase it on this Swedish site: www.penstore.com/schmincke/akademie-aquarelle-limited-edition-12-set , but the shipping can be really expensive, depending on which country you want it delivered.

      Oh awesome! It does look like there are several sets over there! Though sadly it does look like they don't ship to the US for the US viewers wondering.

    I would buy less colors just the basic sorta primary colors in the professional artists colors. You will be more happy than having 25+ tubes of cheap colors. In order to sell academic sets for students beginners, obviously it has less pigment. They can’t do it any other way.
    They probably have less because they don’t want to “discredit” the name rep. which is for high pigment colors for professionals. That said, their student grades are probably better than many off brand what they call their top shelf paints period.
    I just think it’s better to start with the primaries, look to mix colors and then begin to add in the special colors that you can’t make up or colors you use a lot and don’t want to keep making up and trying to match. For sure whites would be like that but also the mineral types, the granulating or some of the other delicious colors.
    Anyone who has a grandma with lots of deviled egg plates, ask if she like to give up the one she really doesn’t care for, or go to the goodwill store where you will find them, if not other thrift, consignment, or antique shops. They are never expensive unless you pick a really nice one. But they have the big open area in the middle where pickles etc go and then the egg half sections to put your paint. They are perfect for watercolors.

    As much as I love Schmincke paints, their sets don’t do them justice. The selection of colors is bad in every way. In the Horadam line have a more interesting strongly granulating ultramarine, a prettier ochre with a redder undertone, more interesting neutral yellows, there is no burnt umber, useless sepia and blacks, no true magenta. It’s just a very limiting color selection, while with 12 colors you can combine something much more versatile.

      I totally agree that the selection does a disservice to their gorgeous offerings!

      I think they want you to add the colors you like more to fill the whole tin up tu 24 colors. Good marketing trick... Buying a cute tin like this half full you sure be tempted to add more!

      @@esinfa I don’t think it’s a bout marketing, this set is supposed to be “traditional” and kind of cater to everyone. But as it usually is, trying to please everybody you please no one.
