When jets at the time looked like the Mig-21 and the English Electric Lightning, Saab came up with this double delta winged beauty that wouldn't look out of place alongside today's fighters. The Berkhut would stand a chance at being produced if a practical approach to an articulating wing could be devised. It is a striking presence in the air to say the least. With respect to the Sukhoi line of thrust vector capable aircraft, while there is an inherent problem with severe energy bleed off during radical maneuvers, a highly focused program aimed toward using the 360 degree vectoring capability in specific scenarios coupled with extensive training could yield remarkable results. The real MiG-31 'Foxhound' is a Mach 2.8 capable heavy interceptor that when developed was SUPER advanced - it pioneered target-data sharing where one plane could 'paint' a target and another launch the missile. It was developed in the Soviet era to cover the northern airspace - a flight of 4 could control an almost 1000km wide area of airspace. Today it has been further developed to allow its use as the launch platform for the Kinzhal (dagger) Hypersonic missile.

Since you've knocked out a lot of the 4th gen what-could-have-been airframes, perhaps you could explore the myriad designs that emerged immediately post WWII and the beginning of the Cold War Era.
This period saw rapid adaptation of jet technology, as well as the ensuing slew of design challenges designers had to overcome and many aviators paid a high price for that knowledge to mature. For example, outside of raw velocity, many early jets would be danced around by the mature prop designs. There were some crazy shapes and designs on those early jets. 50s aesthetics taken to the extreme.
Keeping to more modern 4th/5th gen birds, perhaps an overview of how essentially, the Chinese air fleets adapted soviet designs (by hook or by crook), and innovated upon those base platforms to develop their own native designs, such as that J20.
India, Israel, and Japan likewise went through their processes of native vs. purhased tech developing their air forces, and came up with their own native products or interesting variants/derivatives.
Another interesting branch could be how the OPEC nations essentially purchase any bit of leading edge tech as soon as its available on the market; case in point, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates' air fleets.
I'm seeing a lot of Ace Combat comments on here... and yeah, it's interesting to see the proliferation of essentially one-off or theoretical Russian birds vs the in-production US counters in the video game industry. If we are talking experimental birds, then dammit I want to see the Tigershark, F16XL, and F15 Active more. When Eurofighter and J-20 are arguably the most modern competitors in bulk numbers, its crazy how far ahead F-22 and F-35 are.
Sorry, Su-57 lovers... 10 developmental airframes and ONE serial production airframe ain't enough to constitute much of a production run; if you lump all of them together, you get one squadron, and I bet half of those wouldn't have all the avionics installed to make them combat ready, being test birds and demonstrators. The backbone of the Russian Bloc air forces are still the venerable Mig-29 & Su-27/35 (and its derivatives). Even then, expect India to be the main operator of any future Sukhoi innovations.
Its been pointed out in other comments, but yes, it is interesting how worldwide, the design evolution of 4.5 gen fighters have leaned towards twin-engined, canard-featuring, delta (blended tailplane) designs with the Rafale, Typhoon, the aborted 1.44, etc. Europe, Russia, and USA have all discarded variable wing geometry, at least, on a large scale that featured so heavily in the Tornado, Flogger, Fencer, Tomcat, Aardvark, etc. That 1.44 had a really streamlined, lifting body, style of fuselage, and yeah, you can directly overlay its planform over the J20 and see the similarities. Kinda funny how Kfir and Viggen unlocked the key way back in the day, and those concepts are now the apogee of conventional (non-stealth) fighter design.

    A few corrections.
Su-37, by the time of its crash, was no longer Su-37, but became Su-35 once again. Originally it was a standard Su-27M/Su-35 and had been upgraded to interest Russian Air Force and foreign militaries. At the time noone bought it for different reasons. As a result Tail 711 had been returned to original specification with the whole mission avionic suite and TVC engines replaced with older originals. Later on Su-35BM program started which was going to completely rebuild the whole set of Su-35 fighters built to date. Airframe was going to be extensively upgraded with composites and zero-timed, engines replaced, electrical systems replaced wholesale together with avionic suite. Essentially bringing them into 21st century and surpassing everything apart from F-22 it was a much more ambitious program. Russian Air Force went a whole step further and ordered not an upgrade of existing Su-35s, but full-rate production of brand-new Su-35BM-spec fighters, today known as Su-35S.
Su-30MK that became Su-30MKI was made at the similar time to Su-35. It took time to modify, integrate and fix avionic teething problems thanks to the Indian demand for western and Israeli systems. So it did exist even prior to Indian interest, just in a slightly different spec.
Su47, AKA S-37 started life not based on Su-27, but as a whole separate project, built as a carrier fighter project. Entire airframe is different, while there is use of some parts to speed up the development. It was not going to even be a gen-5 as it is known today. When USSR was dissolved, the need for the new carrier fighter (the role of which was adopted by Su-33) was gone, but there was a need for PR, and the S-37 prototype became it. Media and some figures called it a gen-5 prototype, hype caught on and the rest is history.

Very nice - Iike how I see some of my suggestions :-). There are some very good books out there about cancelled soviet projects; fascinating ideas and designs that never were alas.
The Su-35S and Su-30SM would be considered the 'successors' to the Su-37 - they both use the concepts pioneered and have 3D TVC engines to name a few (SM means Serial, Modernised - the suffices of Soviet/Russian equipment matter a lot as, for example, a T-80U is a very different machine with advanced characteristics compared to the original T-80). To that end, quite a few technologies from the 1.44 were put into the MiG-35 series, although with the nature of Russian aerospace companies all under UAC, concepts are shared where mandated (so Sukhoi research could be given to MiG).
We moving onto bombers and/or other nations now? I know Britain has a plethora of designs that never were but alas I don't know that much about them.

I’d add another aircraft to the list that, while not designed as a fighter, definitely could’ve been converted into something like one: the Sukhoi T-4. Basically, this was the Soviets’ belated response to the XB-70, and like the XB-70 was a mach 3-capable bomber. The project was cancelled under unknown circumstances before testing was completed, but had it been completed...
Seeing as it was supposed to be capable of reaching Mach 3 with a 9-ton payload, I could see this being loaded up with as many air-to-air missiles as it could carry and being deployed as an interceptor of sorts, flying combat air patrols at the edges of Soviet airspace waiting for NATO bombers to be detected, then letting loose a salvo of dozens of missiles into the incoming formation.
Coincidentally, the T-4 does have a passing resemblance to the fictional MiG-31 “Firefox” from the film adaptation of the book “Firefox” (not to be confused with the ACTUAL MiG-31, codenamed “Foxhound”)

SORRY. you shorten stuff here a bit too much. so... planes with 2 nozzle and 2-dimensional thrust vectoring also have "asymmetrical(as you call it)" thrust vectoring and can mannouvre in two dimensions(roll and pitch). So most importantly only russian aircraft have the ability to controll jaw by vectoring aswell. Maybe you got axisymmetrical nozzles(wich meand round nozzle) and 2D nozzles (wich mean anything bot a perfectly round circle as nozzle) mixed up with the possible dimensions of movement you gain by applying TV to a plane (wich can reach from 1 up to 3 Pitch/Roll/Jaw)?

    • @PilotPhotog
      @PilotPhotog  4 роки тому

Thanks for commenting - the SU-37's exhaust nozzles were capable of rotating 360 degrees and moving independent of each other, hence the term asymmetrical thrust vectoring. By comparison the F-22's exhaust nozzles pivot in two dimensions up and down only, so the reference is to the range of motion for both systems.

You can say whatever you want about the russians, but you have to admit that they really take huge risks, Sukhoi managed to develop two very expensive prototype aircrafts (Su-37 and Su-47) with an economical crisis over the 90's. Despite never been build on mass production, it's thanks to those models that now we have the Su-35S, Su-30 SM and the Su-57.

Well, there is this aircraft which went by the name of MiG-33, known as the MiG-29M before that. It's a little complicated, but, in the late '80s, MiG-29 went under serious modernization program, giving it FBW, much more capable multi mode radar as well as fire control system which altogether gave it much better capabilities as multirole fighter, using A-A as well as guided A-G weapons. It was designated as MiG-29M, and soon after, the MiG-33. However, the collapse of the USSR and we all know how that story goes, it all grinded to a halt. About a decade later, technology from that aircraft was incorporated in the MiG-29 and redesignated as the MiG-29SM or SMT. Interestingly enough, further development gave creation of another plane designated as MiG-29M and it's two seater version MiG-29M2, only this MiG-29M by now was much more advanced than the original MiG-29M or as they called it a little bit later - MiG-33. Anyhow, that was also further modernized only much more than before, and it gave us the ultimate MiG-35.
