      Rachel, that's so cool that you watched my videos, and your students will too. I also assign videos to my students. They need to see and hear LOTS of different violinists!

    Thank you so much for this great tips!
    While trying the mini wishes I found it useful to place my elbow upon my left knee (while sitting of course 😀 ) in order to stabilize the arm so the wrist can move more freely. Being peculiar about how the mini wishes look from the side (they still didn't come out nicely), I then turned the violin away from my neck so I could see violin and awkward wrist motion from the left side of the violin. In the very moment I turned the violin around the wrist motion became less awkward. Turning the violin back to my neck and away from it plenty of times helped me to finally master the mini wishes.

      JENS! That is so exciting that you solved the mystery using your own powers of observation and ingenuity! That puts you in a category of students who are able to self-diagnose! Keep it up! (but don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck....we all need help...lots of it!)

    Excellant! I am adressing the thumb choke problem which Ive had for.many years. Have your student sit on a piano bench outside next to a mountain bike. Place neck on right handlebar grip just below cats tongue of scroll. Violin now is supported on collar.bone and neck. Have student do the siren exercise with 2nd and 3rd finger. The thumb should stick out to the side not engaged with the neck. I found this by accident a few.days.ago and hope it benefits you or your students. I am not a prfessional musician. Ive only had two years of grammar school violin technique. I play by ear and fish. Hope this helps you and gives the sensation of not grabbing with the.thumb. by c.e. usa 7 18 24😅

    You are one of my favourite UA-cam violin teachers. I decided to teach myself to play violin at 43, and after 9 months am still a beginner, but would have gotten nowhere without online tutorials. Just wanted to say that I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skill in such an easy to understand, fun and “unpretentious” way. You make me feel like I can really do this!
    Big thanks from Australia!🤗

      Hi! She has online violin courses on her website. It is pre-recorded and you can go at your own pace and you can ask her questions and she responds and help you personally. It is cheap but VERY structured and jam-packed. It really helped me a lot!

    Somewhat off topic but did you know you can do a vibrato on an 'open string'? :) I say on an open string but its actually on an adjacent string of identical pitch

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  3 роки тому

      YES YES! YOu are correct! YOu can cause an open string to vibrate by vibrating your 3rd finger on the next string up. Cool that you knew that.

    • @TheStarlitfuse
      @TheStarlitfuse 3 роки тому

      @@RedDesertViolin I didn't have a teacher at the time (still don't) I was trying to find a way to 'unharshen' / disguise the sound of the open string. Especially long notes. I think I tried it 4th finger down, I remember different string thicknesses had different responsiveness to the vibrating open.

      @@RedDesertViolin I started playing violin again after a 21 year hiatus to help my son learn (he's 9 now). One day while we were practicing he said "mom, why are you SHAKING the violin? that doesn't look good AT ALL" I said "don't yell at me, I'm trying to VIBRATO here" >.< That being said, I'm so glad to have your videos to refer to. He is playing some songs out of The Waltz Book vol. 1 because of your videos. Thank you!
