I love that little moment. Where Lilo shows the other girls that Strange homemade doll. Only for the girls to leave. She throws the doll away, but almost immediately Retrieves it and hugs it. Its both adorable and sad at the same time.

Yes! Such a tender moment, especially with the sad little piano melody at the end. At that age, Lilo is probably taking the girls' rejection of the doll as a rejection of her - she *knows* they don't really like her, but she's so lonely that she continues to pretend they're her "friends" anyway, and by the same token, she can't abandon the doll because she sympathises with it. It's not like the other dolls, and she's not like the other girls.

And not only that, but Lilo is also bullied by her peers. I also believe that she has undiagnosed autism/Asperger's, which means it's more difficult for Lilo to understand things like social and learning aspects because her brain is made differently. The person who posted this clearly did not watch the movie at all, if they're saying such horrible things about Lilo.

how tf is lilo and stitch not racially accurate? that's my only damn question. seriously how? Aloha oi it's self was a song that was deep in Hawaii's culture long before this movie was made. Not to mention how realistically lilo as a native reacts to tourists being just a child.

    • @littlearies3862

Not to mention when Nani calls out her ex-boss for how fake the luau dinner-place was because, well, what we think of as a "luau" is just what they do for tourism. Its not the actual cultural is, if I remember correctly.
Not to mention, the voice actors for Nani and David (Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee) literally worked and rewrote their lines so they would be culturally appropriate.
And there is a theory that Lilo and Nani were named after the last queen of Hawaii, Lili'uokalani-- who wrote the song "Aloha Oe."

Jeiku Furame I don’t know why racebending came into the mix, but oh boy. I’d say on occasion maybe it’s justified (for example, Hetalia has a character representing the Seychelles. The thing is she doesn’t look black so much as she just looks kinda tan, and I support people coloring her so she actually looks black), but usually it’s just... Augh. I don’t even think meaningful redesign attempts are that bad per se (like maybe a character just has an unoriginal or unfitting design *coughSaberfacesintheFateseriescough* ), but racebending often has this air of haughty arrogance around it, plus it’s just so shallow and unoriginal. Actually make a person of color or at least draw a pre-existing one if you want to so much, people. Maybe draw more Black Panther instead of Iron Man, or make anime characters more Japanese-looking, it ain’t that hard.

Also, when Cobra was getting ready to take Lilo away from Nani, although it probably made Cobra sick to his stomach to be that guy, I think she finally understood Nani's fear of losing Lilo... I think Lilo finally understood what Nani was trying to say by singing, "Aloha Oi" to her the night before. Nani was trying to find out a way to say goodbye if it came down to that, without directly saying goodbye... but, I don't think Lilo caught it till that moment. If you wanna know why I think she couldn't tell Lilo "goodbye for now" directly, think of how much of a mental and emotional scar her parents' death left on Lilo; think of how deeply ingrained that pain is. Now, imagine if Nani just straight up said, "Lilo... people are coming to take you away from me." That would've done worse damage to the already fractured psyche, losing the only family she has left.

To expect Lilo to automatically understand what Nani sacrifices for her is to expect her not to be a real kid. Kids don't have the capacity to comprehend things like that. They don't know why their parents go to work every day, and it's kind of hard to explain it to them. That's something adults kind of try not to tell their kids, because they're incredibly sensitive. They might think that their parents suffer because it's they're fault. I find it funny how they don't complain that Nani doesn't explain this to her instead of lashing out at her, because at the end of the day we feel sorry for Nani, but whether the person who made that tweet likes it or not, she's the adult.
Also, be easy on kids everyone. You've been a kid once, too. You, too, were once a kid who didn't understand the world, and you probably had temper tantrums just like any of the kids on UA-cam did. Your episode just wasn't taped for all to see. This isn't the kid's best moment, so I don't think it's even fair to use this and say "Wow, this kid must be a spoiled brat!" This is their parents taping them at their worst.

I'm also convinced that at least some parents on the internet have a hard time distinguishing a baby from a dog. I'm over exaggerating, of course, but all these "test" videos where they ask their kids not to eat a giant bowl of candies right in front of them while they leave the room is a little too similar to a certain dog test that's going around.

I mean, when I was lilo's age I hit my mom with a pair of used underpants because I didn't want my hair brushing because it hurts. I didn't understand that the tangled cloud on the back of my head would only get worse if I left it, all I knew was that getting it brushed hurt. I did that relatively often, with different things, such as refusing to put on my school uniform coz I didn't want to go, or refusing to get out of my favourite dress at bath time. I dont really get how people can have similar experiences all through their childhood then go, watch lilo and stitch and have a go at lilo, when all she does is act like a little kid. I never really cared for SquigglyDigg because of how unprofessional she comes across in some posts. Being silly and quirky is fine, but actively cussing out or sassing your fans because they said something you didn't like is not okay. She was ESPECIALLY unprofessional in a situation that involved one of my friends.
TL;DR, my friend drew some lewd art of a character in a style that looked *SLIGHTLY* similar to her portrayal of the same character, and she went mental. When they confronted her after some of her fans harassed them, she acted all aloof as if her making a vague-post about it and sending her band of fans after my friend was no problem at all. After that I decided I disliked her because of how badly she handled that situation.
It was after her horrible take on Lilo and Stitch, basically degrading a child for acting like a child, and saying that shit about "not properly representing Hawaiian culture"....that I had just about enough. That was the last straw, and "disliking" turned into "Wow I cannot stand her"...I know Lilo is fictional, but the situation Lilo is in is all too real, and SquigglyDigg had the *nerve* to call Lilo a brat for acting out after dealing with trauma.
You'd think someone with a professional animating job at Nickelodeon would act more professional online...but apparently not. It's fine if she doesn't like the movie, it's just a movie after all, but her takes on it were absolutely horrible, and kind of made her look like someone who hates children for acting like children.
    ---
    *EDIT, 12/5/2022*
I want to address that I am fully aware that a person cannot control the actions of their fanbase. When I wrote this comment two years ago, I phrased it as if she intentionally sent her fans after my friend, which is not the case. However, that being said, someone with a fanbase, no matter how big or small, should be aware that when they make a vague-post complaining about someone doing something they don't like, their fans will most likely try to harass the person they're complaining about. Dismissing it as "Not my fault, I can't control them!" isn't the way to act. Yes, she can't control them, but maybe you should have a little more sympathy for someone who is being harassed on YOUR behalf instead of dismissing it. No she didn't send them, but they harassed my friend to defend her, and she brushed it off when my friend tried to tell her how they were affected.
TLDR: I know she can't control her fanbase. I shouldn't have phrased it as if she sent people after my friend. However, she still acted irresponsibly and that's one of the reasons I don't like her. I have a LAUNDRY LIST of reasons why I don't like her.

This person who wrote that post that Lilo is abused and Lilo and Stitch is the "worst movie ever" DOES realize that Lilo is a CHILD, right? A child who has lost not one...but BOTH her parents. She's being raised by her sister and child services is threatening to remove her. The other children don't like her and think she's weird. But she's just a little girl. The fight that she's referring to where Lilo storms off to her room occurs just after she has a fight with the other girl in her dance class and then the other girls reject her offer to play with them and Mr. Bubbles comes to do a welfare check (which DOESN'T go well) and says Nani has 3 days to change his mind about removing her. So of course emotions would be running high and Nani would be frustrated. But notice two things....in the heat of the fight, there is a moment that focuses on Lilo's face and it looks like she has tears in her eyes. She really DOES love her sister and she doesn't want to be taken away and she obviously feels bad about what happened.. Secondly, when they both calm down, Nani comes to Lilo's room and comforts her and they make up. THAT'S WHAT SISTERS DO. They fight sometimes and 10 minutes later, they are best friends again. Nani is not Lilo's Mom. But she's doing her best to succeed in a very difficult and stressful situation. She had to make huge sacrifices after her parents died and she's having to raise her sister as a single parent. And aliens invading doesn't really help make things better. But again....she's trying.

I have actually been diagnosed with several sequels from childhood abuse, and one hugely important thing I learned is: It actually IS the parents's job to clean up after you when you are a child. It IS their job to take care of you, and deal with you, and your emotions, so they may help you learn how to handle them when you grow up. It IS their job to listen to you, and to ask you about your life, and to allow you to express yourself, even when you don't make sense, and handle your ups and downs. That doesn't mean you are being ungrateful, it means you are being a child. If you're not allowed to be a child when you are one, if you're expected to be an adult before you are ready to be one, then there's something wrong in this dynamic, and you will grow up and carry those unresolved issues into adulthood. Expecting a child to have the emotional maturity and thought processes of an adult is called neglect. And THAT is actual abuse, not a grieving child behaving like a grieving child.

The movie changed my life in so many positive ways I still cannot fathom somebody would act this disrespectful about it. SquigglyDigg has no concept of what the term 'child' actually means because with this take she clearly has never been around children or she's never experienced trauma for herself let alone the underlying damage it does. Lilo has her quirks because it's her way of coping. Lilo and Stitch did well because it was a realistic story that people can relate to and if you look into the deleted scenes, you can see why. Especially Lilo's bedtime story as her way of apologising to Nani for misbehaving.
In Stitch has a Glitch it's similar, with Lilo later realising the error of her ways.

Bullied by both. By SquigglyDigg's logic, that I lashed out makes me a horrible person. As if a child, especially an AUTISTIC one, has the capacity to understand at that age, without being taught in a manner they can learn from.

Sorry but as far as I'm concerned maybe the reason people see us this way is because this behaviour is encouraged by rewarding temper tantrums (Yes I am calling it a tantrum, meltdowns occur because of sensory overload there's a difference between too much of everything happening at once with no small release that your brain crashes and not getting your way, he was in a calm quiet environment with people speaking to him in the same tone you use on a frightened pet) and now because of these spoiled little brats near everyone says autism is just an excuse, even to the truly well meaning ones in a moment of weakness.

Lilo acting like she does with Nani is also very sibling like, I mean, Nani is not her mom, she's her sister. Pretty sure everyone can tell you that your relationship with your mom is not the same as with a sibling. Among all the other things Nani and Lilo are going through there's also this sudden shift in dynamics where Nani is not only Lilo's sister but also guardian now, is something they both have to navigate through but is obviously harder for Lilo as she's only 6.

Lilo is a little girl, just starting school. Think back to your first day of school. Now picture coming home and being told that your parents are dead. That you will NEVER SEE YOUR MOMMY AND DADDY AGAIN.
Now, keeping that in mind, imagine that you had a good luck charm, something that made you feel safe. And now picture someone seeing it, and saying that you were an idiot for feeling safe, implying that it didn’t keep you safe, and that any moment, anyone in your family could die, leaving you all alone.
Would you - at six years of age - just accept it? Would you push them over? Would you yell at them?
Now, picture having no friends. How lonely you would be. And the only people your age hate you. Picture trying to apologise, because you are ONLY SIX, and lost your temper. And the only kids your age basically saying they didn’t forgive you. That they all thought you were a weirdo.
You have no friends except a single doll. You’re bullied by the only other people your age, and you can’t even talk to your parents because they’re both gone forever.
That’s what Lilo is going through.
    =====
    =====
Also... (and keep in mind that not all autistic people are the same)
Honestly, as an autistic person growing up, I had a lot of the behavioural issues Lilo does, even long after most kids grow out of it; even now, as an adult, I still struggle sometimes.
And I can assure you that - from my own experience at least - we (and by extension Lilo) aren’t stupid. We know that it’s wrong to act up, and we feel terrible after losing our temper. But here’s the thing: it’s not something we can control.
At that age, a child’s impulse control isn’t fully developed. They struggle to see other people’s points of view, and if they’re wronged (in their eyes at least), then - at the time - all they can see is that they’re upset, and the person they’re angry at is the cause of it. So they act out.
In an autistic person, your pre-frontal cortex (that’s the part in your brain that controls things like impulse control, and understanding consequences, among other things. That’s the part that gets messed up when you drink alcohol, and why people do stupid stuff when they’re drunk) never fully forms. Knowing what is and isn’t okay doesn’t come as second nature to me, it’s learned.
Of course I know that hitting is wrong, and I could get in a lot of trouble for it, not to mention that it’ll hurt the other person (which I don’t wanna do), and they’ll be less likely to want to spend time with me; they may even be scared for their own safety. But - just like anyone else - if I get stressed, I don’t think. All I’ll know at the time is “I feel unsafe, and I must either leave in any way possible, or fight to protect myself”. And if the person in front of me is the cause of feeling my strong emotions, all I’ll know is that I need to stop that person from making me feel that way.
So I guess in a long roundabout way, that’s my way of saying I do understand Lilo.
(Just to add - I don’t like upsetting others. Just like Lilo. I don’t like being different; I want to be normal. But it’s hard to do that when my brain isn’t fully formed like most people’s are)
I hope my rambling makes sense.

I don’t know whether I’m over thinking as I haven’t really seen the movie in a while. With Lilo talking about the fish that controls the weather and that she has to feed him, maybe her parents got into a weather related accident? Her way of coping is to try to work (keep the fish fed) so that it doesn’t happen again and hurt someone else - whether that be someone she knows or doesn’t. I think she may be trying to prevent anyone else going through the pain she is.
Edit: so I watched the movie and I was correct, her parents went out driving when it was raining which means they most likely slipped off the road. So it would make sense that she would try to appease the weather fish to cope :)

Can we talk about the realism in this movie? Yes, there are literal aliens but Nani has the most natural yet thick body I think I've ever seen Disney make. That goes for Lilo to. Which now implies that everyone else is 'normal weight' and that Polynesians are fat.

I relate to lilo and stitch and it’s honestly one of my favorite movies. When I was in the age range of 5-7 (somewhere there. It’s repressed stuff for a reason) I had to call the cops on my dad and hide with my little brother in my room. I spent a year or two just begging god to give me my family back, save my father from his sins, and begging for forgiveness and protection. My father was a Latino catholic and my family on moms side was Christian/Lutheran. To my childish mind that god was punishing us and putting us through a trial, so it made sense to try and appease that god. Just like Lilo with Pudge. Disney did such an amazing job writing Lilo and Stitch and showing a child dealing with trauma.
Like, I really wish they had more children like this.

When I was a little kid, a ton of adults like Squiggly were in my life. I had experienced a traumatic experience (that of which I will not mention) and it caused me to have a lot of mood swings. My teachers (who are supposed to be supportive and caring figures) constantly told me to "stop being a crybaby" and to "grow up." It was the same thing with my parents. Reminder: I was a *child* who was trying to process what the hell just happened. It's because of said adults that I grew up way too fast, and I didn't get to be a kid like most others did. I adored Lilo because of the way I could connect to her, and saying that she was an ungrateful brat was honestly pretty damaging. Not just to me, but plenty of other people who could project themselves onto Lilo.

Nani deserves respect just for the fact that she puts on a brave face and tries to meet the expectations of other people despite denying herself her own life. She knows she’s not emotionally available for a relationship with David despite both of them knowing she’s attracted to him. She’s trying to be the mother and sister Lilo needs, and desperately wants to show Cobra she can be a reliable guardian for Lilo, despite Lilo’s eccentricities and the alien interference in their lives. She shows incredible patience in trying to help Lilo and get Lilo to help her back, trying to stay the sister and avoid playing the Mom card. So many things about growing up she has to deal with in the worst of circumstances, finishing school, starting a relationship, getting a job, raising a kid, keeping house etc, and she keeps up that brave face until she hits breaking point.

ANOTHER THING, when Lilo and Nani were reconciling after their fight, Lilo told her "I like you better as a sister than a mom." Lilo at the beginning of the movie, not only lost both her parents in one night but in some way also her older sister. Nani, had to suddenly be the caretaker of Lilo and grow up so faster, holding down a job and raising her sister. She couldn't just be Lilo's older sister but also had to be her guardian. Nani is struggling and trying to make this new situation work and Lilo being a young kid, only sees her big sister acting so different than before and it doesn't feel normal to her. So that can also lead to some of Lilo's tantrums or struggles with Nani at the beginning.

Another thing to consider is that Lilo is on a different end of the spectrum. She’s autistic. I think the film took a beautifully realistic approach to it. Some people might see stitch as just comic relief, but his story arc involves coming from a family that had no family values. Stitch acts on instinct and relishes in chaos as a result from not being properly worked with growing up. He yearns for a strong connection/love. Where Lilo is very introverted, holding in her stress until she explodes, Stitch is very extroverted and felt very lost. Lilo touches upon this in a heartfelt way when she tells him she sees him cry at night, knowing why he is so destructive. Stitch’s body language immediately showed his true emotional/state and desire.

Lilo always felt like a genuine real kid from a cartoon. She was written as what kids really act like in the real world and that’s what made her character very relatable to a lot of people from my generation and for later generations too who grew up with Lilo & Stitch. Lilo is a great character. She’s funny, smart and she helped Stitch understand empathy, the importance of family and caring for others.

As somebody who was a child who got traumatized at a young age and saw Lilo as an amazing kid to kind of project onto and look up to, it kind of hurts to hear people insult Lilo and call her a little brat.
It was amazing seeing somebody close to my age also struggling with making friends and empathizing, with odd rituals and behavioral issues - and she was a main character - it made me so happy. And she had a happy ending with a mixture of biological and found family. It brought me so much hope that got me through some tough times because I could relate so well to her.
I think what I liked was that Lilo wasn't the traditional sad, broken trauma survivor. She _was_ sad of course, but she was also confused and angry. She acted out and got in fights and called her own family "broken". She wanted answers and got a magical fish that controls the rain. She acted the way a traumatized child does and the outside world reacted to her the way that they act to any angry child. And I loved seeing that onscreen.

If we are gonna discuss kids and their behaviors, I have to (as much as I agree to dislike her) come in Mertle's defense. She's definitely a brat, but I sympathize with her cuz she and Lilo are both victims of dramatic change in a family dynamic, but the main difference is the presence of positive adult guidance. Mertle's parents were divorced and she is dealing with the absence of her father while her mother tries to make her happy by pampering her with gifts and spoils her but that's not the best approach as the girl isn't properly disciplined and it doesn't help her come to terms with her parents' divorce. Whereas, Lilo lost her parents but has Nani who is a good parental figure that cares for her but doesn't hesitate to discipline her when she's wrong. She also has Stitch, David, Jumba, Pleakley, and even Agent Bubbles who are all part of their family.
That goes to show how essential emotional support is to just material pleasure. Mertle may have one parent who gives her all the toys and material comfort, but she's lacking emotional support to help her get cope with her difficult circumstance, while Lilo lost both parents but has so much emotional support from her family and is able to cope properly while being happy, which is why Mertle is jealous of her and lashes out at her

Thank you! I've been saying Lilo is one of the greatest characters ever written! I have never seen a child so accurately depicted before or since. One more interesting fact about Nani to show how amazing she is, it's hinted that she was going to be a professional surfer and she gave that all up for Lilo. In her room, you can see trophies, medals, and surfing posters. This implies that she was very good at surfing and was well on her way to accomplishing her dream. This is further proven by the fact that she's able to surf with a kid and "dog" on her board. She is that good. I doubt an average surfer could handle that wave as well as she did with a kid on board, literally. It's little details like this that make Lilo and Stitch a masterpiece of cinema.

Bruh. I don't even like kids but Lilo is such a complex character that I can't help but love her. When I first saw this movie at 11, I didn't like it that much because I thought Lilo was a brat but watching it again a year later, I chose to empathize with her character more and understood all she was going through. The kid went through a lot of shit and you expect her to just bear through it stoically? You have to put yourself in her shoes, she is not acting like a brat just to be a brat and that's what makes her such a deep character. She has emotions like a real human being. She doesn't understand how hard it is for Nani to raise her, she's only 6 years old for God's sake! Where in this movie was there abuse? Every sibling fights, every parent fights with their kid.
The girl was getting bullied, what were you expecting her to do? Just sit there and cry? Bruh, I hate characters that sit there crying and whining for someone to come rescue them, it makes them a boring, passive, damsel in distress. This makes Lilo a strong, compelling character.
Also if you choose to believe it, she may be autistic, which also adds to her behavior problems. I'm autistic and I don't always have control over my emotions and impulsivity.

Lilo’s behavior reminds me of a friend of mine. She told me about this, I didn’t meet her until high school, may I add. Now she is a well rounded and absolutely wonderful person, full of love for nearly everyone and everything.
When she was younger she acted much like Lilo did, got into lots of trouble, believed in imagery things to give her hope, was angry and all around an in depth character with many troubles, learning to get over grief. She was just a kid when her mother died of cancer, I wasn’t sure where her father was, but I know he wasn’t in the picture. And with no one else to be there for her, no family, she was thrown into the system. (She has a loving adoptive family now, who stuck with her through her issues) When watching this video, it reminded me greatly of her, the explanation for Lilos actions and struggles to deal with such a big loss, something she doesn’t quite understand. Just like my friend, she acted out, fought people, yelled, bit people and was scared. She didn’t understand what was going on. All she knew was she was alone. Which of course, greatly differs from Lilo having her sister, sure. But if someone who had no one but herself was able to become someone so kindhearted and full of smiles and hope. I can surely believe the same for Lilo. At a young age grief is hard to handle, it can result in so many things, but that doesn’t mean the inability to grow from it.
When my friend told me how she had anger issues when I was younger, any friends listening in and myself were absolutely dumbfounded. She didn’t seem the type. But when she explained why, it was easy to make sense of things. Sure we didn’t have the same experience as her, but we could understand the pain in different ways, certainly not that of losing a parent in the same way. But we listened, and made sure she wasn’t alone as she told her tale. One she trusted us enough to voice.
That’s how I’m sure Lilo would turn out to be a wonderful person. She has someone to listen and understand her pain, and she will never be alone. Family truly is everything, and so is love, whether it be that of friendship or family. Things can always change for the better if you believe.

When Lilo and Stitch came out in 2002 I was 10 and I saw it with my mom in theaters and I absolutely adored Lilo, and her social outcast and being socially awkward and her liking weird things and her fun personality of all the Disney kids that came before and after she is the one I relate to the most a lot of people on autism and Asperger spectrum including myself relate to Lilo and headcanon her being an aspie too not saying she's canonically on the spectrum if she is it's "high function" and if she is or not it wouldn't change her character or my love for her

I don't think that Lilo's personality can really be attributed to her parents' death. Her quirks to cover her pain of losing her parents notwithstanding, I think she may have a mental disorder. I know girls with some of her traits, but they weren't nearly as temperamental and socially malajusted as Lilo.

Great video. Although at first I thought you were going to bring up the scene that Disney+ censored. You know-replacing the dryer with a table with a pizza pictured on it.

Are you telling me that the scene where Lilo hides in the dryer was censored???

If I'm not mistaken, the Pizza box was from the UK release of the movie.

Funny thing is I used to hide in the dryer as a kid whenever my brother and I would play hide and seek. And I never saw this movie until I was in my teens....so yeah I don’t think censoring something like that works

@marianne mccrank I don't think parents would think to point out that specific part to tell their kids not to do it.

You tell him that, man. I adore the movie and the characters. One request. Do you think you could review The Big Trip and Khumba in the future? Just think about it. Great topic there ☺

Lilo and Stitch is one of my all time favourite Disney films. It helped me learn to appreciae my family, even in my moments where I resented them, I still held on to a little appreciation for them.

I agree with how you said this person has probably never interacted with a real child. I'm training to be a teacher and have worked with children aged 3-7 and with a lot of children can be very selfish (generally through no fault of their own). They think about themselves it's not until their older they begin to really think about others.
In school, once I was reading to a child and had another little boy come up to me a shove a book he wanted me to read right in my face. I had to explain I had to finish the book then I could read with him. He doesn't comprehend or realise that I was busy and need to finish with the other child first. And that's just how kids are.
Young children don't have to think about difficult adult things, they often aren't even aware of the things adults have to do and sacrifice. So Lilo, as a 6-year-old, doesn't fully comprehend the things Nani has to think about or what she's had to sacrifice. BECAUSE SHE'S 6.
Most children aren't little angels all the time they have their moments, especially if they've been through the trauma of losing parents and could even be removed from the only family member they have left. Children's brains aren't developed enough where they can process the thought of death and coping with death. They'll act out and while the behaviour shouldn't be encouraged you can't just put it down to them just being a spoiled brat because, like with Lilo, it can run deeper than that.

This will probably get lost in the comments, but thank you for making this video! I love Lilo as a character, and can heavily relate to her. My mom always says that she connects Nani and Lilo with us. She really had to work hard to help me after my initial family died, and my father (the only one left alive) gave me up. I was young, I didn’t understand, and it hurt. I acted out, screamed, threw tantrums, cried. I can say I was a nightmare, but I can also say I was hurting a lot. My mom had to put a lot into helping me, otherwise she could’ve lost me too, like Nani almost did. I know I’m not the same as Lilo, but I do relate. And I love her. This video was amazing, thank you so much for making it!

We see “the perfect child” way too often in media and Lilo is a child that I could actually relate to as a kid - in pain and confused and just trying to make sense of a world that won’t make room for her. Kids are not born with inherent wisdom on how to best perform in society and it’s unrealistic to expect them to be mind readers in situations they don’t even understand to begin with. Even to this day I still see myself so much in Lilo. She just needs love and patience and Nani was able to give her those things most of the time despite being just her older sister working hard to keep her around.

You hit the nail right on the head, brother. This is a bit off topic, but I gotta get this off my chest real quick: In the second movie, I was actually kinda pissed off that Lilo got punished for beating up Myrtle when she insulted her dead mother. Myrtle’s exact words were “You’ll never be like your mom.” Okay, maybe beating her up wasn’t the BEST reaction, but, I don’t blame Lilo. I mean, being a bully is one thing. Being a completely insensitive little bitch is another. I hate that only Lilo gets punished for being rightfully pissed off, and Myrtle just gets off Scott free.

There’s also the fact that Lilo sees Nani as a sister and not a parent. You are definitely more likely to act out with an older sibling than a parent.

When I was 11 my dad left and I acted like lilo. I didn't know how to process so I acted like her. I got into fights when people messed with me. I've gotten better and I want to say sorry to people because I did hurt them for no reason. That's why lilo was relatable to me.
