    Brendan, just want to say that I absolutely love your videos. I am very new to the gym scene so I have been looking online and asking friends for tips and tricks but sometimes it's overwhelming. When I get a "how to" for whatever workout it's usually very generic and no explanation why I should be doing it that way. Appreciate you sharing all your knowledge!

    After picking up squats again after roughly 8 years away from them I've scoured the internet to relearn the basics... this video includes pretty much everything important I've learned from dozens upon dozens of other videos that either omit important info or over elaborate on finer details. Thanks for a brief and thorough video that's perfect for anyone looking to get better at squatting :]

    hey nice stuff.
    One quick think I'd like to point out is that I feel most people that squat, like powerlifters, have got very advantageous body ratio, aka, they have shot femurs in relation to their torso.
    I believe the reason why you often don't see people with long femurs squatting is because it's not very mechanically efficient, as the person has to bend over much more to maintain the bar in a straight path over midfoot - so it's a big limiting factor. A lot of the weight gets pushed by hip extension, so hams and glutes are heavily loaded.
    A lot of coaches see people like this - like me, and they always try to cue with "keep your chest up" or "look up" or "sit straight down", but what they're asking is biomechanically impossible, and I think it takes a really knowledgeable coach to understand that.

    THANK YOU!!! After months squatting the wrong way obv I was feeling pain points at the top of my thighs everytime I was down, plus I never really felt the work in my glutes, more in my quads. Was doing it all wrong, somehow convinced I was supposed to keep my feet parallel when they definitely naturally open and convinced the knees had to stay parallel too and not open! seems so ridiculous now. Thank you for saving my form and my hips ! :) Also you're a great teacher, clear and detailed!

  • @mjrulesbitch

    This is one of the best instructional squat videos I've seen! It was also good to finally hear someone address internal hip rotation as it applies to squatting because I have the same issue of very poor internal hip rotation that inhibits my ability to comfortably get into some positions. Do you have any tips or specific exercises/stretches that can help improve internal hip rotation? Even if I may never have great internal hip rotation, I'd still like to improve it. Thanks!

    • @viktorbraa
      @viktorbraa 8 років тому +1

      If you check out chris duffins hip shift video he does a stretch on it

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  8 років тому +3

      MJ Gaucho yo dude first off thanks so much, really happy to hear it was up to par! So I tried for YAERS to improve my hip internal rotation with no avail. I did every stretch Kelly starrett recommended, every video I found on UA-cam with some goofy band distraction stuff I tried and more! The only thing that's helped me some was what Quinn henoch showed me the other day when I visited him. Literally an hour after I tried it I saw improvement. The first drill I did is on my Instagram where I'm doing a single leg Elevated squat biasing internal hip rotation. Check it out there, I have a whole write up explaining is. My IG is "aesthetic_strength". Now the other one is really difficult to explain via text. I will however film it, I see Quinn in a week and I'm going to film my whole session with him if he allows it. If not I will film my entire mobility routine that he puts together for me. I promise 100% I will get this up in about a week!

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  8 років тому +3

      MJ Gaucho also it's worth noting that I've done EVERYTHING in the books and stretches don't seem to do shit. Why Quinn's stuff worked was because he's big on movement and proper activation. Instead of stretching I was either stretching by activating dormant muscles or I was performing movements in ranges of motion that I lack. I've really realized this last year that learning proper MOVEMENT is king, not stretching.

    • @mjrulesbitch
      @mjrulesbitch 8 років тому +3

      Brendan Tietz thanks for the response! I checked out your IG and I'll definitely try to implement the lunge into my routine. I've also tried a ton of different things to try to improve internal hip rotation with minimal success. I'll be the first to admit my consistency hasn't been great, but that's partially due to not seeing much improvement no matter what I try. I'm looking forward to the upcoming video!

    I started losing weight back in 2012 and kepted the weight off for 4 years by doing hiit and some light weight lifting. Than I slacked off for 1 year and 1/2 I gained weight from 140lb I went up to 178lb😫! So I just started October 2018 getting back on track up until now weighing at 172lb I only want to make gains and use more weights. I came across your videos and man let me tell u u ARE AWESOME u have helped me so much with your videos on how to properly do the exercises. Thanks man!

  • @JoeyAme
    @JoeyAme 7 років тому +3

    Wider is not always better. Although you do want to keep your knees from caving in, you might confuse the novice by telling them to throw their knee out. It's all about hip structure and mobility.

  • @Rev0UK1
    @Rev0UK1 8 років тому +5

    them quads doe....
    interesting stuff regarding the internal rotation within the hips. I've always struggled with whether to point my toes out a bit or keep them forward. I've got a lot of excessive mobility within my hips and can imitate either one of the forms you showed but do struggle with finding that sweet spot for glute activation. Will have to play around with technique a bit more as ive had some tendonitis flare up in my right knee and ive not been able to pin point which foot position was irritating it the most.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  8 років тому +1

      Rev0UK1 take into account your limb length. I've noticed lankier people seem to do better with a few extra degrees of toe eversion but that's somewhat anecdotal. Also just try and diagnose why the knee is acting up. Can be foot arch issues, exercise movement problems, etc. if you get a clear cut answer there it'll help distinguish if your toe eversion or lack of it it causing the knee issue. Usually when in doubt a slight eversion of the toes is safest but play with it!

    • @Rev0UK1
      @Rev0UK1 8 років тому

      yeah, I am quite tall and definitely have long limbs. But I am also narrow too, very narrow waist / hip.
      I figured my right knee (the one with the issue) is trying to compensate / do more work when either my glutes aren't properly firing, or potentially an imbalance in my hips (left hip area is tighter than my right)

    Thank you Gina and Brand0n. I have been having soo much issues with my left side not engaging causing right hip pains even at low working weight and I think I have finally narrowed it down to not pushing out the left knee (it buckles and stays buckled). Everything you said in this video makes sense. I really need to not worry about having to have my feet forwards as I used to think that that was the "ideal" and I need to work on having both feet turned out the same which I think is causing me some pains (watched a video and it is insane, after I place my feet my right feet will drastically turn outwards more when I go to squat).
    Thank you always for helping with the good content.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  8 років тому

      bemyvforever you're welcome! And yes in my clients one of the first things I notice when they have a hip shift, inactive side, or asymmetrical pains is always feet placement in the squat being unequal. It's huge for proper engagement and neutrality. I'd highly recommend doing single limb activation drills too! Especially glute med/min ones! It'll help wake that sleepy side up if it's more than just foot placement.

    • @BeMyVforever
      @BeMyVforever 8 років тому

      Okay, I shall add some single limb activation! I already do some mobility stuff but they're more stretches and hip widening stuff and I guess it still wasn't helping. We'll see how that goes tomorrow! Thank you, thank you.

  • @samanthabohlman9100
    @samanthabohlman9100 7 років тому +2

    These tips are super helpful! Could you do a video on how to identify where your mobility is lacking? I have a hard time squatting so I work on lower body mobility most everyday but I don't actually know what aspect of my mobility is hindering my squat or if one area is worse and should have more focus. I'm following a Bret Contraes training plan so I'm incorporating a lot of hip flexor work. Last week I played around with a weird rep pause scheme but I think it helped. I did a bottom pause for one increasing second for every rep (so rep 1 was 1 second pause and rep 2 was a 2 second pause) every couple reps I'd bring in my feet a little (pretty wide and toes out is the only way I can get full depth) and finally after my last pause rep I'd do some regular tempo squats with my better stance. Sounds complicated but it was pretty effective.

    6:43 I've always heard that, but damn really overpushing my knees out and rotating my feet out helps me so much to feel my glutes

    For muscle building purpose and not powerlifting, could you give advice to choose SBD knee sleeves please ? Very fit or just enough to secure knees ?
    Thanks so much.
    Great video !

      MrKidCid definitely just fit to hug the knees. They're already really tight even with the regular fit. They help increase proprioception which is the biggest plus for bodybuilding, you just need a regular fit for that.
