- Опубліковано 13 вер 2019
- MH-185 is a Michigan State Highway on a tiny Island named Mackinac, located in Lake Huron. According to an ordinance passed in 1898, no automobiles have been allowed to run on the asphalt of MH-185 and traffic is limited to foot, on horses, by horse-driven vehicles or by bicycles only. It's the only state highway in the nation where motor vehicles are banned.

MH-185 is a Michigan State Highway on a tiny Island named Mackinac, located in Lake Huron. The Island is only 9.8 km2 in land area and around it, runs the 12.8 km long MH-185. Since the Highway is a circular one, it has no starting or ending point, leads to nowhere and doesn’t connect to any other highways.
In the 1890s, when Automobiles had started to get popular in the country, some people attempted to bring cars to the Island, alienating the residents with their noise and disrupting the island's quiet, contemplative way of life. Several residents of the island complained that a doctor's car scared their horses and caused carriage accidents, and these complaints quickly prompted the ban on all motor vehicles. Since then, other than a handful of emergency and utility vehicles, no cars or trucks are allowed on the island and no motorized vehicles appear on M-185.
For public transportation, the Island has horses - around 50 of them for 460 permanent residents. People bring 600 more horses to accommodate the peak tourism season in the summer when the island population swells to more than 15,000. Bike rentals are extremely big business on the Island with 10,000 bikes in use at any time in the summer. Naturally, Bike theft is the biggest crime on the island with 'Drunk Biking' popular among regular pub-goers.
In the name of emergency vehicles, The Island has an Ambulance and a Firetruck. In the winter months, the Mackinac Island Police is allowed to patrol the Island in snowmobiles and roadside litter is picked up using a horse-driven wagon.
In 1933, M-185 became a Highway, and M-185 designation was assigned to it for the first time. It became the only state highway in the nation where motor vehicles are banned.
The only 2 cars on the island somehow still hit eachother

@@MM-xm5vx You know, I watch all of these shows mentioned for a while now, and have to say that they each resemble each other yet each has something unique to it.
Mackinac does have an airport strangely
It's almost exactly same thing HAI does
I saw the title and already knew it would be about this highway. Thanks for making a video on this! I've never seen one this well made on this topic before!
The fudge on the island is amazing. The island has like 20 or 30 fudge shops. The fudge there is so famous there’s an ice cream flavor called Mackinac Island Fudge!
There are 13 fudge shops on Mackinac.
Thank you for spelling and properly saying Mackinac
Thank you! especially because I've been roasted for bad pronoucination of names in my other videos.
SideNote lol you see what happens when you pronounce like a scholar ... you get brownie points 😃😂😂
Being from Michigan, it’s very nice knowing somebody finally said it right
It really doesn't matter. Both spellings are used throughout the state. For instance Macinaw Road in Saginaw. Those pesky settlers couldn't decide whether to use french or english spellings. This dude obviously just found the wikipedia page for Macinac Island and decided to make a video about a technicality. Not to mention the deliberately misleading thumbnail.
No crashes except the time I scraped my knee after I fell of my bike
No motor vehicles?
*LEG-DAY BIKERS INVADE US ROAD*
Kudos on actually saying Mackinac correctly! I was born, raised and lived in Michigan for 37 years of my life and have been to the island and bridge several times.I chucked at your lead in to the stats about highway M-185 knowing myself that it's the "highway" that runs the perimeter of Mackinac Island. The Sanders Fudge Shoppe is a dead giveaway. LOL
LOVED the video! Its minimalistic yet it shares a lot. The background music is calming and does not break the immersive scenery. Im babling; just want to say: great video! Keep it up! Im definitely subscribeing!
wow, road accidents are bad, we should make them illegal
Yeah, you need to look up the word "accident." Typical gun-nut logic.
@@briantw I'm pretty sure you missed the joke.
Paul Mckenzie LMAO!! I’m not sure which is funnier, your awesome comment or that Brian Tristam Williams actually thought you were serious. 😂😂😂
@@briantw whoosh
Ha ha gun man funny
They shouldn't feel bad about the accident. In the early 1900s, there were two cars west of the Mississippi and they ran into each other in St. Louis.
Also their was this one tree in the middle of the dessert and someone managed to hit it with their car.
Wtf this channel is so underrated, the quality is so high so I don’t understand why there aren’t more people watching these.
I wish you put your sources on the video or description. That's important for credibility and for people interested in going deeper than what is presented.
Welcome back! We’ve missed you!
Why is his channel so underrated???!!!
You have to use more exclamation marks if you want to get attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a bit a trivia. Besides the emergency vehicles and snowmobiles, there IS ONE OTHER "motorized vehicle" allowed on the island -- AIRPLANES. I flew in there myself by in the late 70s from Detroit.
Why is your channel soo underrated??? I subscribed 1 week ago and really enjoyed you videos😊
Glad you’re back!
Hell yeah!! Welcome back 😎👊
Your videos are such a vibe, love em!
nice videos love it. instantly subscribed.
You are back!
Sooooo this is the highway I’m biking on in Wii Resort😂
I didb't even have to watch to know this was on Mackinac Island, walked that road a number of times.
Oh I grew up on makinac! My family has a summer house there!
Wow! That's fantastic, I'm so pleased for you and all your family! Hip Hip Hoorayyyy! Whoopeee!

@@mara608 Ooops! Me thinks you have a sensitive nose . . . Never mind, jump on your bike, ride around the island on traffic-free roads and smell the fresh air blowing off the seaside. Meanwhile, we sit in traffic on our motorcycle at the red light, breathing diesel fumes from the coal-hauling truck adjacent to our crash helmets.

Great video
Welcome back!
No motorized vehicles on Mackinac Island?! Although it's situated in the state with automotive factories?! Mackinac is like no other island on earth! How unique!
Haha, that's some nice looking Swedish road signs :) // Sincerely a Swede
I can confirm that in rdr2 horse accidents happen more often than vehicle accidents
I remember when i glitched into a wall on rdr1 and flew across the map.
Adds a new meaning to a dual carriage way!
Well I now know where my next vacation will be. Pretty cool video 👍
It's nice there. Went there in 6th grade for a field trip. Originally born and raised in Michigan.
Bro *I-95* has literally like 30 accidents a day
Oh you're a smart one
You are a flipping legend man.
Mike Pence just got in trouble for having his motorcade drive him on Mackinaw Island.
FrenchToast MashedPotatoes "In trouble"? He might have got a bit of of shit for it at the time, but in trouble? Please.
Did he really though? Emergency and authorized vehicles are allowed to operate on the island, so it's not like no car has been on the island since the 1890's
MACKINAC
Oh damn you uploaded
Really good video, you earned a sub from me :D Keep it up!
There are some Vice Presidents who should have watched this video.
I'm going to move there. That place seems like paradise.
4:56 - As a Canadian, I wonder why there is a Canadian flag shown here! 🤔 Very interesting. :) Thanks for sharing! New sub here. You make really cool videos on awesome topics! Keep it up!
Whoaaa a SideNote upload??
After a looooong time
@@SidenoteChannel glad to see it, great writing and editing as always bro
Thanks man!
How did you make the thumbnail?
Did you just tell me to visit this island in my next vacation? Because it sounds fun
Bashir Alasam It is. Biking the island is one of the most pleasant experiences I’ve ever had. And there’s so much to do and see on the island that it could easily be a several day trip
I been there before mi-85 a lot. Lot of family vacation their with I was growing up. Memorys
Weird how the United States doesn't have any set specific rules for highways. That's just odd to me as a European who has grown up with set standard speed limits for towns, open roads and motorways my whole life. Like if nothing else is signed, you follow those speeds.
its like a mini netherlands with all these bicycles
Funny because US VP just drove in with 8 vehicle motorcade.
You could also see this from another perspective. Since they only have two motor vehicles, a firetruck and an ambulance, and they manage to crash one into the other, the Island has the largest accident to vehicle ratio. As in, 100% of the island's motor vehicles have been in a traffic accident.
Hilarious! Also what a great example of how statistics can be spun to serve whatever viewpoint someone has
In The Netherlands there are many, many carless highways. They are called bike-highways and the country is full with them. In Dutch a “fietsnelweg”, it’s an unofficial term for bike pathways without level crossings with motorized traffic. Just one of the reasons biking as a matter j form of transportation is so popular and safe in The Netherlands.
My friend broke their ankle on M185 during a class trip to the island, while biking. That trip was fun for me, not so sure about her though. She had to sit on the bus until we went back to the school to go home.(I live near the island)
I seriously don't know why you don't have more subscribers.
I miss going to Mackinac Island so bad
I've always wanted to visit Mackinac but it seems like it gets WAY too crowded in the summer. And i certainly don't think I can survive a winter there :P
Damn. Now I want Mackinac Island fudge and pulled taffy.
Mackinac is beautiful!
💖Recommend visiting💖
I live in Michigan and the roads are so bad that we probably are the highest crash rate, mackinaw island is pretty unique though, it’s amazing there
Yea i know. I left Michigan a few years go the roads are supper bad
jack l to this day, probably never gonna change
Yes I will never happen at least Florida is awesome roads
MACKINAC
@@bessertc basically the same thing, I’ve seen people spell it both ways even though that’s the correct way
This video is brought to you by the Mackinac Island tourism bureau!
Drunk biking 😂
You can bring your snowmobile into the island and ride around when the ships are still sailing
I believe snowmobiles are used on that road in season. Heck, they even mark a trail across the straits to St. Ignace with old christmas trees in winter.
Omg new vid yay
This seriously needs more upvotes.
I've been here really awesome place!
Dam I’ve been on that island
Island has only two motor vehicles. Somehow they still manage to collide.
Wonder if they allow electric bicycles and scooters.
They don't
How does Amazon deliver packages without trucks?
5:19 Well this a "Facepalm" moment...
How the hell hit the firetruck the ambulance door?
Was this a thight spot there or what?
Wow I-95 and I-75 are in the top 5 for dangerous highways and both of them are in my city!
From my basic map knowledge I have made a hypothesis that you are in Miami.
Brooklyn-Manhattan 2010 Congrats 🍾, you’re right
@@CenturionMkIII
Yay.
It's funny that Canada is still under the US when our roads are covered in ice half the year
When you step off the ferry boat at Mackinac Island, the first thing you're hit by is the aroma of horse poop and fudge.
This is the same song lennar uses for his outros! Lol
Its surprising that the streetcar bug didn't make it there otherwise it would probably be the only street railway still using steam dummies for motive power.
Who would win? A weapon designed to kill other human beings to the best of our ability or a horseless carriage?
Shoutout to Michigan - we have the only highway that bans motorized vehicles AND the best hash.
That guy in 2005...
That's because it's on Macinaw Island, where all cars are banned. Motor Vehicles aren't banned on the road, it's banned on the island.
MACKINAC
Thank you for using metric! :)
As a South-East Michigander it would be heaven to have no cars here
I’m about to go to I 95 in a couple days so hope and wish me luck
why have you stopped making videos
It's been awhile.
5:41 - Statue of Darth Vader.
*old town road intensifies*
The only place where you don't need a license
There are a lot more US drivers than most countries. There are generally two cars per person in a lot of households.
I remember ride my bike on it when I was little
My man look like a obama and yoda fusion...
Actually police and fire trucks are permitted to travel on that roadway. So there is vehicles that drive that circular roadway
I think a road with no auto mobile is called a side walk
I bet the guy who crashed in 2005 regretted it
4:38 Oh so that is why the British call their main street a "high street" - that is pretty cool.
Road accidents are more dangerous than suicide What???
Dude macinac island has that rule to protect the environment from pollutants and keep it nice. We're literally taught that in school here in Michigan
MACKINAC
@@bessertc the CORRECT way to spell it even tho pronounced Mackinaw. Yes.
I was expecting a dual carriage way that connects two cities. As a single carriage way it might have qualified as a freeway here, if it connected two cities. (Or, at least, two major towns)
Anyway, fascinating road.
Is this also the World's shortest highway? Or is there an even shorter highway out there?
Hm
@@rhodesianwojak2095
Hm
No. There are MUCH shorter highways than this. M-185 is approximately 8 miles long. There are highways in Michigan that are much shorter than 1 mile in length. There are state highways in other states in the US that run for only one block.
you just know that the fireman that caused that crash has never heard the end of it...
The netherlands:
Am I a joke to you?
I was wondering about that too. If bike highways are counted then this street, with 1 motor vehicle related accident, is far from the safest in the world. There are hundreds of bike highways with 0 car related incidents in countries with highly developed road-separated biking infrastructure like the Netherlands and Denmark, and hundreds more around the globe in bike-friendly cities like Tokyo or Strasbourg. In fact this street is probably among the least safe streets that ban motor vehicles in the developed world, with just that one incident. It's not a difficult statistic to keep on 0.
Just destroy that small point where you had the ambulance and firetruck accident, and make a very tiny bypass from that point toake the highway once more accident free
