  • Native unveiled these right AFTER we completed our kayak fishing project. One of these day my timing will improve. We all really like them, whether for hands free propulsion, the workout of pedaling, or just the "uniqueness" of the design, which is why we did this little video.

    That's pretty amazing. That thing sure hauls ass considering he was peddling at a slow pace. I sure wouldn't mind having one of them. A very well put together little craft.

    It's all good! Sitting in any boat on any water is WAAAY better than sitting in front a computer typing and listening to the winter wind rattle the windows of my office like I am now...

    Hands free kayaking is the way to go. I have a Hobie Revo and it can get good speed especially with the sail. This Native looks like it can go a little faster than a Hobie Mirage drive with little effort. I guess it depends on what you are on the water for. Cruising around and sight seeing in this Native would seem more ideal but for hands free fishing Hobie is the way to go!

    I'll tell you this much. I've been looking into the Hobie Mirage-powered boats but this thing looks much quicker. At the very least, it looks a lot more efficient in terms of how much distance you get from each pedal push. For those of us who are looking more for a cruiser than a fishing kayak, this definitely looks to be the way to go.

    It's all good. Hobie certainly does their niche well, much like I think Native Watercraft boats do their own niche well. My first boat was a canoe, so I see the NW Ultimate as a canoe and love it for that. I also happen to like standing and poling a boat, for which an Ultimate is designed. Standing also makes sight fishing much more effective. Dry bags can keep things dry and for me offer more options than built-in storage. If bow waves are a concern, I add a front skirt to the boat.

    Native Watercraft released this kayak model mid-August 2008. Most paddlesports shops should at least have demo models in stock now, and should soon have boats available for purchase, if not already.

  • @QuietwaterFilms
    @QuietwaterFilms  15 років тому

    Yes it is faster than paddling. You still need a paddle for the times when you want to move laterally or do some other small movement. But for getting from Point A to Point B, for me, there's no question that it is faster than paddling.

    Depending on where you live, you might be able to find a shop that has demo models of both and try them out. BOATS ARE ALL GOOD!
    I think there are 3 things that are different between the two boats:
    #1 - NW pedals like a bike. Hobie is back and forth like a hand saw.
    #2 - NW boat can go backwards. You just pedal backwards. I believe the Hobie boat cannot go backwards.
    #3 - You can lift the NW pedal unit up and store in the front part of the boat. I'm not sure if Hobie pedal unit can be removed.

    I own a Hobie Mirage so I know all about those. There are some positives and negative about both.The going backwards option of the Native is ok...Like the rudder system seems to be smoother up and down...I've heard the Prop can get clogged with grasses in shallow marshy areas. Even though the mirage extends 16 inches down you can still travel under power thru about 6 inches of water by half pumping the pedals... native seems to be limited in real shallow water....just wonder about speed of both

    I have a Hobie Revolution and i love it while watching this video the Native really lacks in the fishing area A LOT 1The boat doesnt have any stock rod holders 2 there is no under storage for your stuff that shouldnt get wet 3 it doesnt look as stable i can hang my feet over my kayak in the water while im drifting across a spot 4th where are the scuppers thats right there are non what are you going to do when a big boats wake hits you and comes over the bow all i know is my boat will drain nice

    someone needs to invent something like this but that can be easily retrofitted to you're existing Kayak or Canoe. Even if you still used an oar to steer...but im sure rigging up a rudder wouldnt be to hard.

    wow. who wudda thunk that this video would have legs like it has had? Probably simplest to write that everything has changed in the decade+ since this was published. Several updated versions of this boat have made it to the light of day. Everybody involved in this video has moved on to other pastures, with the exception of Rutabaga Paddlesports. It remains healthy and kicking in Madison, WI., just like it was back in the day when I made this video. As always, if you are curious check out your local paddling shop and see what they have on the floor (assuming the shop is open of course...). Online info is abundant as ever.......happy trails in your pursuit of pleasant paddling and pedaling!

    What does this kayak draft with the Propel system in the water? I have been in Hobie's Mirage Drive and and Native's regular kayaks. Native's seats are waaaaaay better than Hobie's, but the hands free feature is a huge selling point. An absolute joy to fish without having to handle a paddle.

    Nice job of getting around the Hobie patent, but I prefer my Mirage. OK, so I don't have reverse. No biggie. You would be paddling this thing in shallow water. Six of one, half-dozen of the other. At least I can still use my foot scallops with the Mirage drive in.

    Même si le pédalo est au départ un bateau sur flotteurs, je pense qu'il s'agit ici plutôt d'un "pédalo" plutôt que d'un kayak, puisque l'on propulse plus souvent avec les jambes, en pédalant, plutôt qu'avec la pagaie.

  • @danfuerthgillis4483
    @danfuerthgillis4483 10 років тому +1

    My idea is different, it works like a rower but with centered gravity pushing, so it is very precise, using your feet is a good idea however your arms are much stronger.
    I have beaten 2 people on a canoe and me on a flat rubber boat in a river race and I clearly won by using the centered rowing using my unique rowing technique. my paddle system sits ontop of the canoe and since it uses pontoons the canoe is always stable. And you row with your arms on 2 un even handle bars. You stear with the bars as well. It's a drop in system for canoes. Parts came from a kids bicycle left on the street for garbage pickup.

    • @riothero313
      @riothero313 10 років тому +6

      What kind of freak of nature has arms that are stronger than their legs? Look at your thighs and then look at your biceps and tell me that your arms are stronger. Unless you are in a wheelchair there is no way.

    • @danfuerthgillis4483
      @danfuerthgillis4483 10 років тому

      Yes it's true the reason is simple, are you on a seat on that boat and riding the pedals like a bike? NO!!! Because you are pulling the center of gravity and putting it right over your feet HORRIBLE way of doing this. My legs are strong and when I am on a boat I can row faster than if I was using my feet. I use a circular patter for paddling which is awkward to learn but that is the key to get more power out of your arms than your outstreched legs.
      Sitting down and putting your legs stretched out, because you can not get your upper boddy weight in order to push the pedals faster, this is how a Bicycle works. Legs vertical, body pushing down on the legs. You can not get this power if you are laying down unless you use your arms. I have raced people on canoe, a kayak and me on a rubber boat, using the circular 2 separate paddle stroking and won against some fit people using a $10 rubber boat. Good idea but Mine is amost finished and using a gear system I have increased the power 5 times. And this system goes on any boat or canoe without modifications universal.

      LOL There is not even a possibility of arms being stronger than legs. As for you comment about how the pedal is oriented. Have you ever seen a recumbent bicycle? Check out a recumbent bikes pedal orientation and also how fast a recumbent bike is compared to other bikes. Your info is flawed regarding pedaling anything.

    @capp244 You are comparing apples to oranges. This boat has rod holders available too they just aren't on this one. You did pay extra for them on your Hobie. Also your Hobie is a Sit On Top, this boat isn't. That's why you can hang your legs off the side,, doesn't have anytbing to do with stability, its just that you are sitting on top of your boat, not down in it. The Native Propel looks more stable to me. Can you stand up and fish in yours? Apples and oranges.

    You pedal it... and it is tiring! I tried one since I have used the original Ultimate 12 (with skeg) since the year they were introduced. Pedaling is a pain and the assembly takes up space for your legs. The simple and cheap solution is to use a 30# Minn Kota mounted on the back deck along with a pushrod to steer and a motor scooter 12vDC speed controller. Add battery and you are ready. See my video on how I did it. A 30# troller is about 100 dollars and a deep cycle battery is small and runs it all day and recharges well over 100 times.

    • @bicyclingkayakfisherman90
      @bicyclingkayakfisherman90 10 років тому +1

      The added weight and cost of both the trolling motor and battery is what makes that idea prohibitive. Then add in the cost of state motor watercraft licenses and the idea really becomes a truly bad idea. You don't sound like much of a kayaker if pedaling is tiring, I can't visualize you paddling a kayak either. You should just buy a john boat.

    This drive is useless if you go anywhere there are weeds as it sits too far down as stated before my paddle system is now in some boats available on many rubber fishing boats so it clearly shows that the paddle system works better as it only contacts a bit of the surface water so it does not get stuck on bottom weeds
