Unlike most of "foreigners speaking Chinese" this guy doesn't show off many language skills, but he shows a lot of respect to the locals and understands the culture well. He speaks Chinese clearly with the right tones. He's an example to follow if you want to begin learning Chinese.
A lot of Black people tell of rudeness when they visit China but I think it’s a huge communication and cultural gap. They aren’t used to seeing black people or foreigners so they stare and take pics and some touch but I think if you can talk to them it will create a bridge that will take away the perception of rudeness and seem more like curiosity and intrigue

I can understand why the people are curious and may get touchy but not something nobody should do in public. Personally, I’d be curious too, but may not be as touchy but that’s just me. Once everyone can find a way to communicate, it won’t be long until people will get along and gain respect from one another. Everyone wants peace and have a good time. I think, seeing this from Brazil, that, what he is doing is global service. He is presenting himself and Chinese people... connecting and in the end learning with each other. No mídia or propaganda involved. Real people to real people.
It's no way rude, the elders stare and listen especially in my case because I speak rapidly. They are so polite unlike White New Yorkers, they new to ask before they touched my locs. Even the teens.
A friend of mine visited China about 15 years ago. He was an unusually large man who stood head and shoulders over most people he met in China. He said people would stare, but they were very friendly and happy to see him and many asked to take pictures with him. He spoke very well of the Chinese people.
I learned more in this video about everyday Chinese life than any documentaries I have seen. The people really open up and are friendly when you know the language and show interest in them and respect for their culture. How did you learn Mandarin so fluently? Much respect.

As a single Black woman I traveled from North to South China years ago. I do not speak Chinese but learned a few phrases out of respect before traveling. I hired guides to be with me in the various towns, villages and hutongs that I visited. I must say I was treated like a rock star! The majority of the Chinese people I met only saw Black basketball players on television - never met a Black person in person. They were so curious and so very friendly. The people were so very happy that I ate what they ate - I stressed to my guides that I wanted no part of tourist type food. Some villagers were so happy I was curious about their lives that I was invited into their homes and their kitchens (feeding me like crazy) because they wanted me to actually see how they lived and survived daily. My mind was blown when in one small town’s museum they showcased the Silk Road’s trading history with various figurines which even included Black figurines (Africans). I was so happy to see such. I had absolutely mind blowing experiences in China from North to South and hope to one day return.🙋🏾♀️🌟❤️💯
That was wonderful to read. I think a lot of the credit goes to you. You seem very open to their curiosity and even appreciative. I'm sure they heard a lot of stereotypes and might innocently ask questions that seem offensive. I have no doubt that both you and the Chinese became better people after your visit.

Great video. I love the mutual respect you have for each other. I see the same here in New York. Whenever a non-Chinese person speaks Chinese in Chinatown, the locals really open up. This is especially true when you're black because it shatters stereotypes. I saw a black father and his young son speak Mandarin in a Chinese store and the owners praised the family for days (I shop there and understand Mandarin and Cantonese). They also bemoaned the fact that their own children barely spoke Chinese. The father spoke English with a Commonwealth accent so I assume that they were tourists (or perhaps UN diplomats).
I’m in my 30s and my family never exposed me to anything outside of my town in the States, so to see a fellow African brother exploring and learning a new language is so inspiring to me and I will be glad to show my young boys your videos. ❤ Edit:I swear people in the comments turning MY EXPERIENCE into something negative make me wanna 🤮. As a Korean American, I appreciate you educating your viewers. Many seem to mistake curiosity with racism. Do you ever feel your treated bad for the color of your skin or that your not from around there?
China is very racist. They still have state sponsored tv specials that include people dancing around in black face. Racism is ingrained into chinese culture to keep people culturally stunted. Everyone who does not look chinese is a foreigner, it doesn't matter if you were born in china.
Love ❤️ from a Jamaican brother 🇯🇲, I saw a video recently of a fellow Jamaican native young brother like yourself who studied in China 🇨🇳 and was the valedictorian for the graduation class. I was so proud of my country man and race representing us in such a positive and inspiring manner. The young Jamaican brother spoke fluent Chinese and thanked his teachers and friends in Chinese and I was so proud of him for learning another language like that. The sky is the limit once we apply ourselves and stay humble. So from one black brother to another big ups and keep on representing your race and country well, what you are doing changes the stereotypes of black people especially black males, we are often hated without a cause and this is one step closer to closing the divide between our fellow man and citizens of the world 🌎. @justjj21 True. A Jamaican friend told me that up to 30% percent of the population in Kingston has Chinese ancestry. That sounds really high so I don't know if it's true. I also think that they probably speak Cantonese and not Mandarin. The Chinese diaspora from the 1960s-1980s came mostly from Hong Kong and the Guangzhou region where they speak Cantonese. That's why most Chinatowns outside of Asia speak Cantonese and use traditional characters.
I know a couple of Jamaican Americans wit a Chinese grandmother or grandfather, you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell by looking at them. Some people have great grandparents who are Chinese so it's even farther. Who knows. @@nomadnyc8983

This reminds me of a buddy of mine years ago, in Japan. His father was a black American man, and his mother was a Mexican woman of mixed European and indigenous descent. His Japanese was absolutely fantastic, which would really freak out Japanese people -- people whom he would often overhear talking about him on the train and such, saying things like "where can he possibly find shoes in this country with such big feet! ... who would cut his wild hair!?" ... eventually he just let it roll off his back, having tired of suddenly addressing them in his flawless Japanese, just to see the looks on their faces. :-)

Regrettably, the choice is mine to live my life with pressure. That desire for more money, more material things, more love, more this, more that, doesn't end. Can I go back living a simple life. The key is just getting past your inhibitions and being wiling to make mistakes. Most people are kind and accomodating to people making a good faith effort to communicate in the local language. I'm glad you had that experience! Hopefully you'll have a chance to go back.

Learning languages isn't being gifted. Anyone can do that, yes, Chinese if very hard, however, I'm still surprised that some people don't even have 2 languages they can speak
Late reply but a big reason for that is because they don’t see any other races. The vast majority are Chinese or of similar Asian descent. Meaning- when they see a foreigner it’s very rare so this reaction makes sense. Racism in countries like the US stems from large groups of different races coexisting and power being submitted over one or more. To say there’s “no racism at all!” Is pretty ignorant considering the circumstances to which they are encountering another race is vastly different to the complex history and coexisting of multiple cultures in the USA
I didn’t comment this to undermine the Chinese positivity in this video, it’s absolutely wonderful. It’s just pushing that idea that china is racism free isn’t true in the way you’re implying

Damn, this video was eye opening. I'm a latino guy wanting to make a trip to Asia, but China specifically and you talked about points that never came to my mind but so obvious at the same time. It is good seeing you spend time in China. I am also a black man who has lived in China. But your Chinese is much more fluid and natural-sounding than mine. I do speak Mandarin, but I studied Chinese at the university, so my Chinese-speaking is more "Beijing ren" Chinese than local Chinese, which is not the way that they actually speak in small towns and villages. I lived in China for three collective years. (every six months I had to leave mainland China then return later (in my case, it meant spending a few days in Hong Kong). However, I did not spend a lot of time in a big city like Chongqing, or Beijing. Rather, I spent much of my time in mountains, in small towns or villages. (The Gele Mountains, Bi Mountains and Tong Lliang Mountains). In these places, the food is amazing! And If you are staying with a family in their village home, or in a family compound in the mountains for a period if time, expect people to travel from far away just to see and meet you! This is because in these geographically remote places, people usually have never seen or met a black person - except on TV! Yes, you are correct. Being able to speak Chinese in China endears you to them and them to you; they are fascinated, curious and very, very Friendly. I also must speak to their hospitality - Over the three collective years, that I lived in N.W. China, I made many friends, was taken on many tours and to many sacred places of deep value to the people. (like family grave-sites) For me, over time, I was "adopted" by a Chinese family where I mostly hung out. My Chinese family was very protective of me and viewed me as a family member. Before leaving China five years ago, , my family gave me the key to one of the family apartments; a place where I can stay whenever I return to China. Amazing... Xie, Xie 🙂

OMG, I love it and the fact you're from Cameroon which showed up at 53% in my ancestry, I'm stoacked . Yes I agree it's much easily if you can speak the language when visiting other countries, especially China. I always wanted to be a polyglot but never made it, had life distractions take over me. Chinese language would have been my 2nd language because I'm so intrigued by the short syllables. I play with it and if I were there I can talk my way home but I'm still so far behind the 8-ball. However you are doing quite well, I am extremely impressed.

"Have you eaten (lunch/dinner)?" is the de facto friendly and polite greeting for all Chinese diaspora no matter where in Asia/overseas. It shows one has manners and concern for the other party. Not having had your meal/being hungry strikes at the core of the Chinese psyche (not quite a joke, lol). And it is ok to tell the truth eg. I have not had my lunch, but be prepared for people trying to offer you food to save you from dying of hunger.
China is a beautiful country, I have been to Xian,Xining, Wuhan, Yitchang, Zhengzhou, Guangzhou, and Beijing cities. The welcome is unforgettable. I always want to go back 🇳🇦 ❤🇨🇳

Your camera angle was aimed at causing less attention as you focus on yourself until they approached you to inquire about you and where you were from. Just curious about the 11:20mins portion of the video when you stopped to buy water. A lady could be heard in the background as you approached the fridge. I can understand why the people are curious and may get touchy but not something nobody should do in public. Personally, I’d be curious too, but may not be as touchy but that’s just me.

It's no way rude, the elders stare and listen especially in my case because I speak rapidly. They are so polite unlike White New Yorkers, they new to ask before they touched my locs. Even the teens.

A friend of mine visited China about 15 years ago. He was an unusually large man who stood head and shoulders over most people he met in China. He said people would stare, but they were very friendly and happy to see him and many asked to take pictures with him. He spoke very well of the Chinese people.

That's a magical and respected skill to learn Mandarin. I love seeing this - super positive and shedding stereotypes with kindness.
As a single Black woman I traveled from North to South China years ago. I do not speak Chinese but learned a few phrases out of respect before traveling. I hired guides to be with me in the various towns, villages and hutongs that I visited. I must say I was treated like a rock star! The majority of the Chinese people I met only saw Black basketball players on television - never met a Black person in person. They were so curious and so very friendly. The people were so very happy that I ate what they ate - I stressed to my guides that I wanted no part of tourist type food. Some villagers were so happy I was curious about their lives that I was invited into their homes and their kitchens (feeding me like crazy) because they wanted me to actually see how they lived and survived daily. My mind was blown when in one small town’s museum they showcased the Silk Road’s trading history with various figurines which even included Black figurines (Africans). I was so happy to see such. I had absolutely mind blowing experiences in China from North to South and hope to one day return.🙋🏾♀️🌟❤️💯

I'm sure they heard a lot of stereotypes and might innocently ask questions that seem offensive. I have no doubt that both you and the Chinese became better people after your visit.

Great video. I love the mutual respect you have for each other. I see the same here in New York. Whenever a non-Chinese person speaks Chinese in Chinatown, the locals really open up. This is especially true when you're black because it shatters stereotypes. I saw a black father and his young son speak Mandarin in a Chinese store and the owners praised the family for days (I shop there and understand Mandarin and Cantonese). They also bemoaned the fact that their own children barely spoke Chinese. The father spoke English with a Commonwealth accent so I assume that they were tourists (or perhaps UN diplomats).
I’m in my 30s and my family never exposed me to anything outside of my town in the States, so to see a fellow African brother exploring and learning a new language is so inspiring to me and I will be glad to show my young boys your videos. ❤

Love ❤️ from a Jamaican brother 🇯🇲, I saw a video recently of a fellow Jamaican native young brother like yourself who studied in China 🇨🇳 and was the valedictorian for the graduation class. I was so proud of my country man and race representing us in such a positive and inspiring manner. The young Jamaican brother spoke fluent Chinese and thanked his teachers and friends in Chinese and I was so proud of him for learning another language like that. The sky is the limit once we apply ourselves and stay humble. So from one black brother to another big ups and keep on representing your race and country well, what you are doing changes the stereotypes of black people especially black males, we are often hated without a cause and this is one step closer to closing the divide between our fellow man and citizens of the world 🌎. @justjj21 True. A Jamaican friend told me that up to 30% percent of the population in Kingston has Chinese ancestry. That sounds really high so I don't know if it's true. I also think that they probably speak Cantonese and not Mandarin. The Chinese diaspora from the 1960s-1980s came mostly from Hong Kong and the Guangzhou region where they speak Cantonese. That's why most Chinatowns outside of Asia speak Cantonese and use traditional characters.
I know a couple of Jamaican Americans wit a Chinese grandmother or grandfather, you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell by looking at them. Some people have great grandparents who are Chinese so it's even farther. Who knows. @@nomadnyc8983

This reminds me of a buddy of mine years ago, in Japan. His father was a black American man, and his mother was a Mexican woman of mixed European and indigenous descent. His Japanese was absolutely fantastic, which would really freak out Japanese people -- people whom he would often overhear talking about him on the train and such, saying things like "where can he possibly find shoes in this country with such big feet! ... who would cut his wild hair!?" ... eventually he just let it roll off his back, having tired of suddenly addressing them in his flawless Japanese, just to see the looks on their faces. :-)

The key is just getting past your inhibitions and being wiling to make mistakes. Most people are kind and accomodating to people making a good faith effort to communicate in the local language. I'm glad you had that experience! Hopefully you'll have a chance to go back.

Late reply but a big reason for that is because they don’t see any other races. The vast majority are Chinese or of similar Asian descent. Meaning- when they see a foreigner it’s very rare so this reaction makes sense. Racism in countries like the US stems from large groups of different races coexisting and power being submitted over one or more. To say there’s “no racism at all!” Is pretty ignorant considering the circumstances to which they are encountering another race is vastly different to the complex history and coexisting of multiple cultures in the USA
I didn’t comment this to undermine the Chinese positivity in this video, it’s absolutely wonderful. It’s just pushing that idea that china is racism free isn’t true in the way you’re implying

It is good seeing you spend time in China. I am also a black man who has lived in China. But your Chinese is much more fluid and natural-sounding than mine. I do speak Mandarin, but I studied Chinese at the university, so my Chinese-speaking is more "Beijing ren" Chinese than local Chinese, which is not the way that they actually speak in small towns and villages.
I lived in China for three collective years. (every six months I had to leave mainland China then return later (in my case, it meant spending a few days in Hong Kong). However, I did not spend a lot of time in a big city like Chongqing, or Beijing. Rather, I spent much of my time in mountains, in small towns or villages. (The Gele Mountains, Bi Mountains and Tong Lliang Mountains). In these places, the food is amazing! And If you are staying with a family in their village home, or in a family compound in the mountains for a period if time, expect people to travel from far away just to see and meet you! This is because in these geographically remote places, people usually have never seen or met a black person - except on TV!
Yes, you are correct. Being able to speak Chinese in China endears you to them and them to you; they are fascinated, curious and very, very Friendly. I also must speak to their hospitality - Over the three collective years, that I lived in N.W. China, I made many friends, was taken on many tours and to many sacred places of deep value to the people. (like family grave-sites) For me, over time, I was "adopted" by a Chinese family where I mostly hung out. My Chinese family was very protective of me and viewed me as a family member. Before leaving China five years ago, , my family gave me the key to one of the family apartments; a place where I can stay whenever I return to China. Amazing...

The food was great and the people really accommodating. Thank you China. My only challenge was the flying. I left Barbados on the Sunday arrive in China the Tuesday

Yes I agree it's much easily if you can speak the language when visiting other countries, especially China. I always wanted to be a polyglot but never made it, had life distractions take over me. Chinese language would have been my 2nd language because I'm so intrigued by the short syllables. I play with it and if I were there I can talk my way home but I'm still so far behind the 8-ball. However you are doing quite well, I am extremely impressed.

"Have you eaten (lunch/dinner)?" is the de facto friendly and polite greeting for all Chinese diaspora no matter where in Asia/overseas. It shows one has manners and concern for the other party. Not having had your meal/being hungry strikes at the core of the Chinese psyche (not quite a joke, lol). And it is ok to tell the truth eg. I have not had my lunch, but be prepared for people trying to offer you food to save you from dying of hunger.

It appears several locals were amazed to see you and upon speaking Chinese you were able to interact and have a smooth conversation with locals. Your camera angle was aimed at causing less attention as you focus on yourself until they approached you to inquire about you and where you were from.
Just curious about the 11:20mins portion of the video when you stopped to buy water. A lady could be heard in the background as you approached the fridge. Is it customary for you to take your own water from the fridge or do they typically serve you when making street purchases? Thanks again for sharing this footage.
