"Hob" is the acceped word in formal British English for the hot cooking surface on which saucepans are boiled or left to simmer. You will find hobs on gas and electric cookers, built into kitchen worktops (and often made of ceramic) and on old-fashioned coal, coke or wood-fuelled kitchen ranges.
It is not and has never been slang and I am surprised that this essential word does not exist in the USA.
Americans seem to favour simple descriptive terms, like cooktop and sidewalk.
Sliding effortlessly from hobs to mortality? I think our Britishness is rubbing off on you geez!

I can confirm that if you walk around Glasgow talking to your phone about arriving in glasgow, there's a high chance someone will yell abuse at you. also, yelling abuse at each other is how we show affection, it's all about the timing.

The " Just stop oil " movement must be the most hated people in UK at the moment. They cause so much trouble holding up traffic that people miss flights , miss funerals , miss hospital appointments etc . . They visit art galleries and throw paint over famous paintings and so on and so on. Thank you for the belly laugh JJ as i'm sitting in bed not feeling well but you have made me laugh soooooo much xx

"Hob" is also an English nickname for the Devil (you know, "Old Nick", "The Evil One", "The Morning Star" etc.).
I've seen Quatermass And The Pit (awesome British sci-fi horror movie from 1967) so that pretty much makes me an expert on the word "hob". Because that's how that works.

yeah, and the thing about learning all this stuff about the UK is that we have a head start on knowing about US culture, because of Holywood and the amount of US media in general that is syndicated around the world. We even watch your news stations on occasion, like cnn etc.

Hob isn't slang, it's what we call the hot plate or gas ring area.

We always call it the hob, we have a gas hob on top of our electric oven. Definitely not slang.

Like many American English words, Stove harks back to olde world times, when people cooked on a stove made of bricks and or clay which later evolved into metal . A stove was fuelled by burning wood, although just like across the pond many of those early Americans were still cooking on an open fire. Eventually coal took the place of wood, then came gas and electric and the appliance changed completely hence the combined oven and hob was born which we call a cooker in UK , but as with many other American English words that have become archaic or reasigned in UK we forgot to send you that memo.
The controls for a 'stove-top' are known in my house as 'hob-knobs'.

Hob. It’s not slang it’s the actual term . It’s usually setting into the worktop and it’s very rare to have a freestanding cooker in the UK now. The built in oven will be in a tall cupboard.

"Going out out" is when you're going out with your mates for a night of drinks, maybe food and a nightclub and putting nice clothes on. "Going out" is casual clothes, casual drinks. Check out Mickey Flannagan

I stuck a full page "Don't Park Like a Twat" sticker on the side window of a large BMW SUV that used to park across my driveway when visiting a neighbour. On a nearly empty road, but they apparently had to always park where they could see their car from their window, in case the local riffraff messed with their car.
Nobody 'tapes' anyone anymore, they record them. Tape hasn't been used for a long time.

He had every right, whether you agree or not. On board a plane the captain has total authority. If he wants you to remove the t-shirt and you want to stay onboard, you remove the t-shirt. He can't force you, but he can have you removed for not complying.
