Hi everyone! I had such a great time working on this little gas stove, and I’m thrilled to have saved it and made it usable again-even though one of the burners seemed beyond repair due to heavy damage. It was quite the challenge, but the results made it all worthwhile! If you enjoyed this restoration, don’t forget to hit that like button and share your thoughts in the comments-I’d love to hear from you! Cheers, Johnny
I have to agree with you. Media blasting is a great way to prepare metals for a new finish. However, it does take a lot of time and gets tiring pretty quickly. With what you had to work with, I'd say you've done a respectable job... Thumbs Up!
Vinegar will dissolve rust. Baking soda makes the vinegar bubble and looks cool, but also neutralizes it. So you're making the vinegar much less effective by putting the baking soda in.
I had thought about commenting the exact same thing, but I realized it would be a waste of my time. Rusty Shades is going to believe the bubbles do something regardless how much anyone tells him otherwise.
@georgepretnick4460 Why so sure? Don't forget that I'm a film maker and for me reactions like that are welcome because people love them and it is nice to show them the result, good or bad. Many restoration videos showed this technique and doesn't really work as presented. Secondly, I used a different chemical to proper remove the rust as a good alternative, but it seems you are a bit silly to understand such a things and quite frustrated. Get a life man!
What a treat of a video!!! Loved watching that Mr. Shades 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. It's great to think that battered old unwanted burner is now fit for duty again, and it's always way more fun to be reusing old stuff rather than buying new. You totally deserve the chicken dinner 😂😂😂. 😎
Wonderful restoration job you did on the double burner stove. It looks much better than before and it works like a charm too. It must have been a tough job getting those rusted burners off.., but you got everything looking the way you first got it. Excellent work.
Very nice work R.S.. I couldn't tell what kind of penetrant that you were using, but I have a suggestion for you... Give this a try, mix up a 50-50 mixture of Acetone and Automatic transmission fluid... The acetone will carry the ATF into places that regular penetrant won't reach.. Spray it on a few hours before disassembly... It has been tested by project farm and found to exceed the highest price penetrants... And it's dirt cheap to make... Mix up a gal... Just keep the lid tight so the acetone doesn't evaporate.... Again, very nice video, thx for sharing...
Yes, I should have opened the air vents, but I was preoccupied with everything else than that at that moment. Plus the emotions that it gives. Let's not forget that there is gas in a 100+ years old stove 😅 But for you as a viewer l, this is hard to feel. Thanks for watching! Cheers
You forgot to lube the gas valves with lube made for them. 17yrs working in the RV industry as a master certified service technician I repaired lots of cook top stoves and ovens.
I thought you had lost your mind or ran out of things to restore when I first saw the project. Thinking it was a camping stove, until you were finished. You can almost see it being in a house or cabin during the time period. To add that was most likely state of the art for the early 1900 to replace wood burning. Very nice restoration
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. It was pretty challenging but when this happens, motivates me even more to save the item and in the end, it is very satisfying to look at it. 😀
The burners are very likely set up for coal gas, which had a much lower caloric value than propane/butane and natural gas, so the gas/air mix is completely off. Probably the burner orifices are much too big.
Nice Job, want to give my 2 cents, heat the screw at the stem where the threads are locked to the nut, heating the screw at the head will soften it and can cause it to break.
Because I couldn't separate the burner head and the pipe. They were cracked and made from cast iron. If I force it will be shattered into many pieces and destroyed it without having the chance to repair them again. So, I made a small sacrifice to save the whole piece.
@@rustyshadesrestoration Watched the whole thing, and yes, they were soaked in the solutions. But you never showed the INTERIORS getting sandblasted or polished.
Yes, but it is a long and painful process. It is extremely difficult to get rid of it and a professional enamel kit costs quite a bit of money. But yes, it is possible.
1. Thermal Expansion: When heat is applied to the screw, it causes the metal to expand. If the surrounding material (like the threaded hole) doesn't expand as much, this can create a tiny gap, making it easier to turn the screw. 2. Breaking Rust Bonds: Heat can weaken the adhesive properties of rust (iron oxide) and any other residues that might be holding the screw in place.

I did test them and they were clean. I usually show up on camera when I have something positive, otherwise people are getting bored with my testing in every video. I know because I did it for a while.
It's not too bad. I have only a few suggestions. Always use the right flathead screwdriver. For stubborn screws, get you a manual impact driver. Get you a mini belt sander as well. Last, with stubborn hoses, use a heat gun to heat up the end of the hose. It will make it more malleable.

Breathing in those burning WD-40 fumes can't be good for you 💀
Thanks for your care, but I always have a mask. That's why the heavy breathing sounds.
@rustyshadesrestoration Oh good! 👍
Remarkable work
Thanks!
This is more than just restoration; it's art. Love how you respected the original design.
I wish more people would fix/restore instead of throwing things away, great video!
I more than agree! Thank you! 🙂
You can fix old things not what was built after the 00s, new staf is built to fail and not be fixable
That's right also. Imagine in the future someone who would like to restore a coffee machine will need to know programming as well 😅
It definitely looks better at the end. Great job!
I think so too! :D Thanks!
I don't think I've seen a more detailed restoration 👍 The patience and care you put into this are on another level. Fantastic work 👏
I would have thought that it was impossible to repair but no, you worked a miracle! Fantastic result.
Glad you like it!
Your channel is so fascinating to me. It's amazing how you can restore something that looks beyond repair or use and make it look new again.
Thank you very much!

Watching you restore life to these old artifacts is fascinating. As usual, it came out great!! Nice job - thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Pride that you can have restoring a piece of History! My Vompliments, and my Thanks; for a Great Video! GOD BLESS!!😊😊😊😊😊

Beautiful job love it.❤😊
Thank you! 😊
Great restoration! My only suggestion is, if you continue to use it, you may want to make a drip tray for it.
That's a very nice idea!
Dude you really need to get some Evaporust
I have multiple ways of cleaning rust, including a very expensive laser. The idea is to show people different methods, not to Evaporust every time 😅
Really need to adjust the air/gas mix.

Cuando era chica,en nuestra casa, había una cocinilla así.
I'll be honest, I saw the thumbnail, and thought it was a beat-up graphics card.
🤣
Damn I messed it up. lol
The flame is red! This is very bad. The flame should be blue. You need to set up the correct gas-air mixture.
Open the holes near the taps.
Yes, I know but I was focused on cooking and filming and everything else instead of air vents at that point 🙂
The burners are very likely set up for coal gas, which had a much lower caloric value than propane/butane and natural gas, so the gas/air mix is completely off. Probably the burner orifices are much too big.

Прекрасно!!! 👍👏👏👏
Back then, things were built with real materials, which even when rusted remain durable, not like today's things that are disposable.
Superb
Glad you enjoyed the video 😀

I think the biggest fail here was that you didn't season your chicken 😢 or at least didn't show yourself seasoning your chicken.
Muito bom 😃
Why did you finish fixing the parts you cut off
Because I couldn't separate the burner head and the pipe. They were cracked and made from cast iron. If I force it will be shattered into many pieces and destroyed it without having the chance to repair them again. So, I made a small sacrifice to save the whole piece.
Did you lower the psi on the blasting unit so you wouldn't damage the enamel?
Yes I did.
You sandblast and wire-wheel the outsides of the pipes, great.
But what about the insides? How do you treat those?
Did you skipped parts of the video?
@@rustyshadesrestoration Watched the whole thing, and yes, they were soaked in the solutions. But you never showed the INTERIORS getting sandblasted or polished.
@Mujaki I don't show many obvious things. People are getting bored and start skipping. Of course, I sandblasted tge at interior too.
fake video !
What? What is fake? Are you ok?
Solo buena quedo la cocina de gas c.r.
flem should not be yellow but blue.

What is this yellow machine for cleaning small parts like in 15:00? What is it called?
Tumbler :)

Can the enamel be completely removed and redone as if new? I'm curious about that.
Yes, but it is a long and painful process. It is extremely difficult to get rid of it and a professional enamel kit costs quite a bit of money. But yes, it is possible.
How does heat work on screws? like whats the logic behind it?
Yellow Teflon tape should be used on gas piping.
Why yellow? Mine is white and it is special for gas. Maybe is different from one country to another. Where are you located? 😀
Teflon for gas piping where I’m at is blue haha

To open the air vents which I had forgotten while filming.
