I'm from Sweden, I first heard songs like Caramelldansen in school during physical class in the early 2000s, it's a pretty typical Swedish Europop song of that era that is played for children while doing sports. I only saw the sped up 2008 version much later and learned it was popular outside of Sweden and especially Japan. I never heard people talk about the song so I don't think it's well known how big of a thing it became outside of Sweden.

The fact that some of the lyrics of this song sound Japanese and the tempo of the song increased the interest of Japanese internet users and many works (animations) were created.
