Al Jarreau was always one of my favourite singers - he was unique - his voice multiple instruments. I still have his first LP and listen to it practically every day. I'm 76 now and miss him so - RIP Mr Jarreau

I agree that Al was underrated. I saw him many years ago in London and I was completely blown away. He stuck to jazz roots and he was truly an instrument.

Great stuff, Valerie. I saw Al and his band at Club 7 in Oslo in 1977. One of the best live concerts ever. Al was outstanding, and being a drummer back then I was completely blown away by his drummer Joe Correro as well - the band was 'burning' with Al riding on top.

I've loved Al Jarreau since the first time I heard him sing. When he won his Grammys, I was jumping up & down & screaming... Yes, Yes, Yes. Unfortunately, I never got to see him live. Thank goodness there are wonderful videos of him in concert. I was always in awe of his songs Spain & Blue Rondo; he sang so fast yet he enunciated so wonderfully, you could make out every word he was singing.

I was a Drummer all through Middle amd Highschool Class 82.My first Job before College was at an Amphitheater in Memphis.I was instructed at 18 to take Mr. Jarreau and his band back to there Hotel .Jarreau was seated beside me in the front of our shuttle bus.I noticed over my shoulder the Drummer Alex Acuna. So I said I know you you are in Down beat magazine! He and another band member said something like whatever.Mr. Jarreau immediately knowing rudeness addressed me and said the most kindess words to me covering up for his members! He was and is in my mind one of the greatest Vocalist and performers of all time!Very seldom do Stars in real life live up to our adoration of them. What I am saying he was a wonderful person on stage and real life. What most people don't know he would always employed the greatest musicians from around the world! This meant every show I saw him afterward was an Experiance. My only regret was my wife of the last 19 yrs I did not get a chance to let her Experience a night with Al Jarreau before his Homegoing.

It was very intense, love it! Seen Al numerous times, was suppose to be on a Jazz cruise in 2017, where he was a special guest and looked forward seeing him. Unfortunately he passed away, a couple of months away from the event. He was honored on the cruise and one of his band member was there Chris Walker. The guy sounded just like Al, touring with Al for 10 years.

I love him, too. And maybe you can do more Jazz singers please. 🥰♥️♥️ I thought Dave Brubeck Quartet....5/4 time and he was the first popular Jazz musician to make the unusual time popular. Sting does many songs in a Jazz time as sound.

Thanks for this one...never saw this performance video before so what a treat! Al has been my passion since the 70's when I was 20! Its so nice to hear someone knowledgeable about voice really appreciate his genius. Amazing skill and the range is crazy. Listen to "Teach Me Tonite"...he hits some low notes that are heart stopping.
I saw him in concert once in Seattle 1980 or so at the Paramount Theater...cozy and intimate. The stage was a huge tapestry rug, a mike and him in all white ...he sang non stop for 2 hrs!

I had forgotten about this wonderful vocalese type arrangement of this jazz classic. There are very few singers that could really scat. I love how he is holding the mic like a horn and 'fingering' while he does it. Outstanding! The only other artist I can think of off the top of my head who had an album that was #1 on Jazz and R&B charts was George Benson's 'Breezin'.

Thanks for posting this reaction. Nice to see your enthusiasm for such a great artist. I was meditating this morning and at the end I got up and started hearing him singing Look to the Rainbow (in my mind), so I searched you tube and found this. I got that album when it was released and listened to it for decades, it always lifted my spirit. Tracks of it are still on my various playlists. I even named my '63 VW Bug after a lyric in one of the songs, I called her "Sweet Sue".

I 1st saw Al in concert in '77. My roommate used to laugh at me listening to Al's "Look To The Rainbow ". Then he accompanied me to Al's concert because it was only $2. After the concert he started borrowing the cassette. LOL. I'd recommend "So Long Girl " "You Don't See Me" and "Could You Believe " from that album, although there's not a bad song on that album. Also try "Roof Garden " "I Do" "Fly" "Easy " "Distracted " "Summertime " and "Tomorrow Today "

They were supposed to do a whole album together but they never got around to it. Aside from the 2 gems they sing & scat together ( along with George Benson & Jon
Hendricks) on Jon Hendricks instant classic album "Freddie Freeloader", there's only the duet " Yo Jeans" from Al's album from '88- " Heart's Horizon".
