Their band leader and guitarist (playing a blond dominatrix here) and the other guitarist Közi formed the band in 1992. Because they couldn't find a lable Mana founded his own record lable (midi:nette) and their first album was sold out before it was pressed! When you see Mana playing on stage it's quite easy to ignore that he actually plays pretty much every instrument and composes most of their songs in addition to creating most of their clothes (Yep, he is also a fashion designer with his own lable "Moi-même-Moitié" and the person who brought Gothic Lolita fashion into Visual Kei). When their original singer Tetsu left the band in 1994 and Gackt joined their sound gained more influence from French chansons and like you mentioned these circus themes etc. Overall their sound can be described as a mix of gothic rock and baroque. In 1999 Gackt left the band and their drummer Kami sadly died and wasn't replaced. Instead the band hired a drummer for their live shows when they finally found a new singer in Klaha and that's where they became of more interest to me. They produced only one album together, a concept album called "Bara no Seidou" which was accompanied by a movie with the title "Bara no konrei". (Can an album with programmed drums be a masterpiece? YES it can. But live it is even better) If you want to check out some of their stuff I would suggest to go for one of their stand-alone songs which were released as singles. "Beast of Blood", "Gardenia" or "Shiroi hada ni kuruu ai to kanashimi no rondo". As you asked for the meaning of this song....I think I would have to study theology to understand what Mana wants to say here...I believe it's about the sadism and masochism of power structures. They sing about Nimrod (a mythological figure from the bible. He is believed to have been the first king on earth. Not anointed by God but by himself.) Later they bring David in the mix, who was anointed king after Sauls death...he names like a bunch of biblical figures in these lyrics so without understanding a word your guess is as good as mine. And you were pretty spot on with "This is more like a show then a concert". They changed clothes for every three or four songs here and there are songs which are played nearly completely by background music while the band is dancing...or does...whatever...which is weird ^^''. Believe me there are stranger parts in this concert than ILLUMINATI.
I love MALICE MIZER and ILLUMINATI's a good track, but it's definitely not the one to introduce someone to the band with, lol. I'd say their fourth album "bara no seidou" is probably the most solid to get into first. It's sort of like goth Yanni, as odd as that sounds. But it's a great one. I think you might enjoy seeing them perform "hakai no hate", "kyomu no naka de no yuugi", or "shiroi hada ni kuru ai to kanashimi no RONDO" live.

For my next recommendations I'd suggest ZOMBIE, by the band Versailles. The singer was a roadie for this band for a long time, and got inspiration from them in alot of ways. They're very famous too, so much that the Japanese First Lady is a fan of them and goes to their shows haha. They're neoclassical powermetal for the most part but alot of visual kei acts switch it up alot, for example this one is more heavy. If you'd like something as a starter for them, I'd recommend their song ASCENDEAD MASTER. ALWAYS, I repeat, ALWAYS, do visual kei bands live. As you said in the video, they value the looks and the theatrics more than any other genre of music I've seen performed- It's like a show. Thank you so much!

I'd suggest hearing "Syunikiss" live, or "Shiroi" live if you want to hear them at a more long and proggy epic sound with a different singer.
No, this isnt about being more of a show than a concert. The music is performed as it is on the album, the theatrics amplify it tenfold. Seeing Mana in that blond wig and leather is kind of jarring tbh, the whole thing is meant to be awkwardly sexual and weird imo.
