    As McClellan's offensive against Richmond in the Peninsula Campaign begins, a second front in the Eastern Theater is opened, this one in the "Breadbasket of the Confederacy" - the Shenandoah Valley. Union forces under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks advance towards Winchester in the upper part of the Valley, and opposing them is a small Confederate army led by Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. On March 23rd, 1862, Jackson, going off bad intelligence from his cavalry commander, Colonel Turner Ashby, attacks James Shields' division outside Winchester at Kernstown. He believes that Shields' division is smaller than it actually is, and is about to face heavy odds with his outnumbered command. The ensuing First Battle of Kernstown would result on one of Stonewall Jackson's few military defeats of the war.

      Ok Jackson wasn't perfect but he had great Scouting most of the time. How else can you explain how he maneuvered between two Union Armies and won 12 out of 13 Battles in the Valley? He was able to have more men at most of those Battles when he was outnumbered by two Armies. Jackson and Forrest are studied by every Military School in the World. They were remarkable. Forrest's tiny Cavalry and Infrantry captured more supplies and prisoners than any other General in the War on both sides. Forrest always went to see for himself. Once he was told there were Yankees in the woods across the field. Forrest told them there aren't any Yankees in the woods. He we riding to prove his point then he was shot at. He rode back and told his Scout's that there were Yankees in the woods. Go Figure?

I've periodically done more than a half century of American Civil research, but I still have much to learn, and Warhawk's detailed methodical accounts have filled in many gaps and details that I otherwise wouldn't know. Jeeez. 3,600 men tying up 65,000 is absolutely insane. Especially considering how critical the Peninsula Campaign was to the Union Cause and how it came so close to success on so many occasions. Heck, even the the fact that they chose the battlefield and prompted the Confederacy to dedicate most of it's efforts there was reason alone to support it with 40,000 out of those 65,000 men squandered in the valley/DC. An additional corp for McClellan would have widened the Richmond front and pushed it further west which would have aided McClellan in encircling or at the very least beginning a real siege where he could have applied the tactics he knew best, certainly Lee's counterattack would have run up against a stone wall.
    No wonder Jackson attained legendary status as a commander.

    • @WarhawkYT
      @WarhawkYT  2 роки тому +7

      yeah, the effects of jackson's only defeat was wide spread, holding up tens of thousands of union troops that couldve been used to attack Richmond instead.

      @@jeffmorin5867 If McClellan had captured Richmond in 1862, the entire history of the United States would be different as we know it. No Emancipation Proclamation. A Union Victory in 1862 means 1862 peace terms, not what we saw in 1865. Those three years of war really changed the nation and the political environment.

    • @1987MartinT
      @1987MartinT 2 роки тому +5

      True, 40.000 extra soldiers would have helped McClellan a great deal, if he used them properly. Do remember that McClellan already had numerical superiority, but didn't realize it, and therefore didn't use it. So even if he got them he might still not have acted. It would also have made Lee's counteroffensive FAR more difficult. But, given Lee's talent for fighting armies that outnumbered his own, it might still have ended in a costly Confederate victory.

Five Northern States didn't allow blacks to live or be in their State for any reason. Lincoln supported the Illinois Constitution that didn't allow blacks to travel through Illinois much less live there. In the South there were about 600,000 Free Blacks. They were farmers, Business Men, skilled at the Trades. Southerners had lived with blacks for generations. 12% of Free Blacks owned slaves. A much higher rate than whites owning slaves.
