Communism was such a success that they built a wall around West Berlin to keep its people from availing themselves of its benefits. If you weren't there, you really cannot comprehend what the communists were capable of. When a person tried to escape to the west our hands were tied. We were ordered to stand fast and do nothing. It was quite frustrating. But, I still hold a love and admiration for the people of Berlin, during the time of the cold war, the city was unbelievable. Its power, and sheer energy was a thing to see.
