I did not believe the lies that were reported against President Marcos by the paid media in his time. I am proud to say that I remained loyal to the Marcoses all this time. My mother was a Marcos loyalist helping in his candidacy at the time while we, my siblings and I were left in the house to look after each other, my eldest sister Marietta cooking food for us. All of us since then became loyal supporters of the Marcoses and we were saddened by what they did to President Marcos! Yes, I remember during that time whenever there was a national calamity they were the first responder with relief along the way. The nutribans at school together with milk stopped me from avoiding classes. That’s how powerful his impact on most of us at the time. However, the factual reason the exchange rate of peso to dollar was pegged at 2:1 since 1946 is because of BELL TRADE ACT of 1946.

This law tied the phil economy with the US economy for 8 years until 1954 but gave more advantages to American businesses in the phil such as exploration of natural resources and operation of public utilities. This law was renegotiated that resulted the Laurel-Langley Agreement in 1955, thus superseded the Bell Trade act. The same monetary control exchange rate of 2:1 lasted until 1961. But because of the Filipino First Policy was introduced by Pres Garcia in 1958, the protectionism caused the negative sentiments by many foreign businesses, esp Americans, so they began moving to other countries in Asia (to S. Korea, Taiwan). This period marked the beginning of phil economic decline. After just 3 years from 1958 to 1961, the phil economy declined, the peso was devalued in 1962 at 3.80:1 exchange rate.
The Laurel-Langley Agreement was set to expire in 1974, as preparation for the expiration of the monetary control, the exchange rate was then floated by phil central bank in 1970. After the Laurel-Langley Agreement expired in 1974, whilst the free trades, special and preferential phil exports to US were all ended. Thus the Philippine economy declined further, eg. the sugar import quota from phil was not renewed by US Congress; not to mention also the peace and order problem happened in the phil during 70's. During the same period, the Sino-US diplomatic relations started from 1972. The US began repivoting the economic policy towards China and other SEA countries esp Singapore.
