Would like to here Lorne Michaels version of the story.
Conan must have left some sort of impression giving that a high up NBC executive would name him specifically for the most the desirable gig in Hollywood. Out of all the 100's of people Lorne Michaels would know and then to single out a no-experience Simpson's writer.
The only other thing that really stands out is Conan's Harvard degree with surely left an impression on the comedians he met along the away. Pretty far stretch from broken home, drunk dad upbringing of most comedians.

Conan worked for Lorne for several years at SNL as a writer. I think Lorne mentioned that he always saw Conan in the writers room as a pied Piper and having the whole room of writers and cast in stitches with his jokes and antics.

@blackzepplin He means that there wouldn't be nearly the struggle to replace someone today.

    "that wouldnt happen today" haha

He was referring to how there’s a bunch of replacement options that’d be obvious today.

@@LiveLXStudios And yet, the fight happened, so those options were not mitigating factors after all.

His comment had NOTHING to do with a fight happening or not.
He was talking about what happened when there was a big open spot for a show after the fight opened a spot. Ffs

@@LiveLXStudios Lol No, he wasn't. He was talking about the absolute disaster of a transition to Jay Leno on the Tonight Show and how NBC screwed that up beyond repairing their relationship with Letterman. Conan is saying they wouldn't fight over one show when there are other options, but a fight over one show did occur, again with Jay Leno. It's the exact same fight Letterman had with Jay. The thing Conan said wouldn't happen again, happened again with the same guy on the same show.

The literal thing he was talking about was how Carson and Letterman pioneered the Late Night shows, and how there weren't many, if any, out there that'd be obvious potential options to replace Letterman in the time slot.
He's saying that the void being there with no clear potential options is what wouldn't be the case anymore. Because there's so many of them happening now.
      This isn't rocket science, dumb***

@blackzepplin Well, it didn't happen. Leno took back "his" show, so there was never a vacancy.

You guys aren't very sharp, are you? He was talking about how there wouldn't be a situation where there is no successor to a late night talk show on a major television network.
