- Airshow pilot for one day! Luca Bertossio, several times world champion in glider aerobatics invited me to fly with him the airshow at Horizon Airmeet 2019 in Donauwörth-Genderkingen. It was an awesome experience to join the Red Bull X Glider dayshow from the rear seat in the MDM-1 Fox sailplane!!

That inverted flat yaw spin looking thing blew my mind! I had no idea gliders could handle this maneuvers like that
These planes are stressed for X number of positive Gs, and X number of negative (inverted) Gs. Always more positive say 6-8, and less negative 4-5. I don't remember the exact figures for the Fox. The skill is not over flying the absolute G limit, in either configuration. adding a passenger changes the loads, so this pilot needs to mentally compensate for the extra weight, just a tribute to his skill and experience.
Most gliders can't, generally only some gliders designed specifically for for acrobatics. Generally the roll rates are much higher on aerobatic gliders, the strength ratings are higher, and they usually have speed limiting air brakes too (i.e. you can point straight down with the brakes open and the glider won't go above VNE (max velocity))

Flying to slow near the ground. Stalling isn't really a big deal, you will do it alot in training.. Just fly above stall speed and you won't stall the glider.

Having watched many vids on learning and training for stall and spin recovery, is it fair to say that this sort of expert performance is based on a superior knowledge and application of those same skills? Sometimes deliberately out of control but knowing exactly what do do?

WOW , so cool 😎 ! I am a Skydiver and I want to try gliders one day , I think I am into aerobatics ! How much does it cost the gliding school and what type of glider do you need for aerobatics ? Any tips and recommendations ? Thank you. !
It cost me $4000 au$, n solo on the 5th day, think 20 take-offs n landings, 10years ago. Glider rental approx .50c-1.00 minite. The tow up by plane is the expensive part, charged by the minite or metres ($30 for 1,500 metres AGL) depending at which aero-dome you fly n if good thermals one can fly all day with one tow, cheap enough hobby for the average person. Good luck in yr future flying endeavours.

Luca had an awesome GIF of that one on one of his pages where he does like three level rotations at the top before coming back down, but I cant find it anymore.
@@rcbif101 Any idea if this is a Luca special move or do other competition level aerobatic pilots pull this one off as well? And do you remember if this move has a name? There might be an opportunity for me to have a seat in a Fox next week. Would be great if I could mention it properly.
@@marijnfly - iirc he called it something like a helicopter in the gif I saw, but I've seen powered planes do it too - though not as impressive without the big wings whipping around.
@@marijnfly other pilots do it as well, pretty easy figure to fly. They did it back in the 70s with lo 100 and so on. But the show is well flown
1800 m Höhe so herrlich abzuturnen . Hatte auch mal das Glück als Ballast bei einem Segelkunstflieger an Bord zu sein . Aber sooo eine wilde Show mit Rückentrudeln und anderen wilden Manövern . Das war bei uns nicht . Aber dennoch , hab mich gefreut, wie Bolle . Kein Fahrgeschäft auf der Kirmes , sei es noch so doll , kommt auch nur ansatzweise an solch ein Erlebnis heran . Das , was ihr gemacht habt , war echt ein Bullenritt , passte zum Sponsor .

Hello Luca, I am a glider aerobatic pilot ( fly a fox all so D1995 ) Austria LOIH Hohenems. First I find you cool and nice , I am know other aerobatic glider pilots find him arrogant and a poser . I don't think so, yes you are a showman and make posing for the public. But I think you are the only one you make that right, in my opinion you must be that man to take sponsor s, you must be a showman. Personally I was surprised how nice, helpful and respectful he is. It was really great to hang out with him in Genderkingen the whole day. He is absolutely a professional airshow pilot and he does exactly know how to react to the public. That´s part of the show!

Eigentlich müssten die alle froh sein das es wenigstens einen gibt der die Segelkunstfliegerei öffentlich macht und ein wenig unter die Leute bringt mit seinen Videos. Don't know about this specific one and how it evolved but this model came out in 1993. But yes, modern gliders are pretty high tech.

How did a glider accelerate and perform such manouvers? Cause a glider is usually dependent on thermal, Ridge wind, wave pattern wind etc to fly but without a propulsion system or electric motor how is it possible?
