    Welcome to Dumpit Diary episode 1. I've been given a Peugeot 106, and I'm trying to see just how cheaply I can run it. Could I even run it for free?!
    In this video:
    0:00 Intro
    1:37 First repairs
    12:43 Summary & budget update
    This is the second video on Dumpit, and the first I filmed.
    Confused? Yeah, I would be too.

    I once had a Xantia indicator stalk fail in a similar way but managed to repair it. Reassembling it however did take up most of a very frustrating Sunday afternoon, with tiny springs and contacts pinging round the room until I found the trick of getting it back together in one piece. If someone had offered me a replacement stalk for £16.99 at that point I probably would have taken it!

    I live in the US. My current cost champion is a 2015 Prius C (like a Yaris hybrid, but a little longer wheelbase). In 9 years or 150,000 miles it has cost $400 in repairs and runs me around $50 to 60 a month in fuel for roughly 1,000 miles. With insurance in Florida (most expensive state for it) it runs me around $200 per month in total running costs.

    I appreciate that you have a relationship with Dumpit, willy nilly (ooh err Missus I only just saw that), but I think you need to adjust it. She can't be a princess if she's to be truly cheap motoring. Think of her as saying, frequently, "There's many a good tune played on an old fiddle." Think of her as suggesting, for an anniversary dinner, fish and chips and a bottle of gin, sitting on the sea front. But also having the essential class to really appreciate tailoring of floor mats, especially if it doesn't cost anything (Marge Dumpit says life's too short to think about opportunity costs.)
    Also, loved when you lament the onerous life of a UA-camr, and marked it with a close-up of carefully coiffed eye-brows, roots done and all.

    Keep your eye on Euro car parts. They quite often do oil and air filters for less than £1. Spark Plugs are very cheap. Ok so it's not free but very cheap. Had my 2002 106 independence for 4.5 years and easily the best car I have owned. Sunroof drains can block leading to puddles in the footwells, inner rings rot but aside from that, mine has been bomb proof

    I've had 3 106s, a brand new 92K phase 1 1.1XT 3dr which was written off by a blind OAP when it was only 2 years old. Turns out bright red cars are still invisble at traffic lights, who knew! Then a 1996 phase 2 1.6XS in white which despite being a mere 6 months old and "Peugeot Approved" at the time turned out to be a complete dog that had been badly repaired (no Car Vertical back then). That one was eventually replaced by pre-registered but as new 1998 XS in Rallye blue which I part-chopped for a Scenic 1.9 DTi in 1999 and lost an absolute fortune on. Or at least, at the time it seemed like a fortune because the car only cost £8000 and I got £6500 for it after running it for a year. That Scenic cost £14,000 brand new which I thought was crazy money and was the first time I'd financed a car. 3 years at 0%, Heady times. I really want another 106 before they're all too far gone to run as a summer car. The breaker for me is I don't like the sunroofs and solid roofed cars aren't too common now, such was Peugeot's love affair with limited editions and the perceived need to "add pizazz" by cutting a hole in the roof and gluing in the up and over window. Enjoy.

    I Had the exact same issue on my 106 a while back. I decided to take the unit apart and discovered the problem is a worn down spring loaded pin. It is quite easy to take apart and what I did was grind a new cone on the pin so that it wil glide trought the contact rails once again. I put in a decent amount of grease, and the thing has been working very well again for the last 6 months. replacing the pin with a steel rod of the same diameter should be possible as well. You might want to try this if you don't ike the feel of the imitation model

    I hope you succeed in this endeavour. I wish you all the best. I’m laughing because in Victoria Australia where I am there is no such thing as a free car. We have to pay VicRoads (Aka DVLA) a transfer fee of £50 for them to transfer the registration into a new name. Then we must pay motor vehicle duty on the value of the car regardless of what we actually paid for said car. Your 2002 model 106 would have cost you about £400 in fees & duty even though you got it given to you. Also the car must have a fresh MOT within the last 60 days otherwise you the new owner will be obtain a new one before it can be registered in your name.

      @@UPnDOWN Haha, you’re evidently a man with a spreadsheet. 🙂
      My Dumpit equivalent is a 2006 Ford Transit Connect. It used to be our office pool vehicle but I liked it so much that when it got swapped for something new I followed it to the auction and bought it. 9 years and 60,000 miles later it’s still going strong and is absurdly dependable. It gets serviced properly and a couple of years ago it was treated to a new sill, but otherwise it costs bugger all to run. Fabulous thing.

    Don't bother trying to repair the old switch ,they fall apart as soon as you look at them then hours later after much swearing when you have managed to put it all back together again it works for a week then it shorts out and smoke fills the air especially if the lubricant in the switch catches the heat from the short ,just like Lucas in the old days .
    Happened to a customer of mine who was too mean to pay me to supply and fit a new unit,after he had melted his and the wiring loom I solved the problem by grafting in a salvage switch and loom from a breakers yard .

      I tend to disagree on that. I fixed mine succesfully and it wasn't even that complicated. The only problem was the spring loaded contact pin that was worn and blocked movement due to a ridge. A grinder took care of that...

    Dumpit is giving me ideas to trade my current car.. hmm.. I miss the days of running my little Lancia ( Lucy if anyone wants to know :D ) more and more when I'm looking what my current car is costing me. It'll be premium experience they said.. yup.. thinking it isn't for me.

      Really? How come, mpg for the series? I’ve never savoured the 1.1i

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN  3 дні тому +4

      Economy, mainly. 1.1 is also plenty fast enough for its purpose. A much lighter engine, too. If I wanted to go faster then yes, a 1.6 would be better, but for road-use the 1.1 is ideal.

    0:24 Haha, I used to have a budgie called cheapcheap. (spelled a bit different than this, but phonetically it sounds just like it)
    What are the odds?
    EDIT: For my 2017 Ford Focus I currently am at €0.107/km purely on fuel costs alone.
    Purchase price, taxes, insurance, maintenance and added mods would absolutely skyrocket this cost figure.

    • @gillscorner794
      @gillscorner794 2 дні тому

      @@UPnDOWN possibly imagine a realistic price for buying it say £500 but also then take it's residual value into account, although this will probably be the same as it won't depreciate. In fact it's famous now so will be worth more - it will only be a cost if it breaks and ends up being sold for scrap money
