Never watched surfing videos. Watching it for the first time and this is absolutely mind blowing, mesmerizing, enchanting. Soo fuckiny magical. How beautiful the waves are and these surfers cutting through the waves absolutely fucking gorgeous.

+logan chakos Because he's a poor sportsman - he's refused to go up on stage TWICE after a loss. Plus his wide stance looks shit and his air reverses are overscored. Also, he claims EVERYTHING!!! He's a VERY hard surfer to like. Unless you're Brazilian

Slater remains the master and the complete surfing model, the victory of that medina (who is a good surfer foresure) is just a way to maintain the show and introduce something new for the needs of the audience... Slater inspired all those teenagers who pretend challenging him, and he opened the road to spectacular figures and new surfing possibilities... so when those teenagers win by accident and likely beat slater, they should always observe a kind of tribute to him and respect to his unique and singular performance, without Slater and some other surfers of his era, nowadays surfing possibilities would not be as it is
These new surfers are just as good as Kelly on all levels KELLY SET THE BAR AND NOW THEY HAVE CAUGHT UP

This is a beautiful way of life. I like to think that when you surf waves, you must respect the water. And care for your fellow mans life in the ocean. Never surfed before but I love it.
I feel like Kelly Slater's 9.63 was overscored. That's a 9.3 or 9.4 at most in my eyes, Because the wave wasn't as powerful as some of Gabriel Medina's waves

Barrel bro, you are probably right. Overall I was more impressed with Slater, he took more risks. I also find it noteworthy that he didn’t need to be towed out. I know there are rules, but still he did it all on his own power. He nearly beat the best wave. 41 years old versus 20 years, my hat is off to the old dog, but the kid deserves the win by the rules

Cplo Wu Maybe. Slater likely always gets few tenths of a point; he is pretty much the big money draw for surfing. He does get a few favors from judges, but Kelly saved the market and surfing tour by him being on it. If Kelly is not on tour, none of the other guys are going to get paid. Kelly is like Muhammad Ali in boxing. Maybe other boxers were better than Ali, but Ali's personally brought big bucks to the sport of boxing in general. Andy Iron's is the only other guys that could replace Slater, but Andy is now dead.

I cant wait to see an optimal line overlay on a wave. using sensors in the water plus a map of the surface you could generate a few lines that would be best for a surfer similar to a first down line in real time.

Both slaters waves were overscored and medina still beat him. The judges have improved so much since then thank god!
I thought about that on Medina's 9.5 vs. Slater's 9.63. But I figure the difference in points is due to style. Kelly's kick out was more stylish than Gabe's.
@@gulftoad ah... but style is not part of the judging criteria. If it was then there would be no brazilian storm and parko, fanning, ace, kelly and a few others would completely dominate the tour.

This year was no doubt my favourite tour ever to watch and still is. Watching Gabe just own every event all year long with this weird oblivious but super confident personality was awesome for fans of this (kinda)dark horse. It was like 3 mo into the tour when it was like "okay Gabe's in this event vs whoever, alright that dude's not in my next rounds of Fantasy Surfing."
First time he surfed Cloudbreak the prior year , was even bigger , The skinny kid everybody said could only surf small waves and do airs made the final , guess who was his opponent ? Kelly and he won sure .

Somebody please explain to me why some of these ASP cameramen feel that they have to fill the screen with the surfer. Don't they realise how important it is to be able to see the top and bottom of the wave?
I much prefer when they hold the camera under water so you can hardly see anything at all. Also wonderful was cutting to a tent at the moment Medina is given the result. Really, difficult to compete with quality like that, although Captain Obvious, the American commentator, gives them a good run.
