  • In this video we discuss prepper communications. Is a CB radio any good in a SHTF scenario? I think so. I try to give you a brief overview of the what, why, and how. This isn't a technical how to but I'd like to get you thinking about what your plan is if/when the balloon goes up.

    My buddies and I used CB all the time growing up in the late 70's/early 80's. Mounted a mobile unit under a shelf in my bedroom, antenna mounted to the window ledge outside and ran it off a power invertor - my wanna-be base-station. Money was burnin' a hole in my pocket with a Radio Shack just a 10 minute walk away. :)

    Great video. I was into it back in the seventies myself . I had a radio shack 23 channel with a d104 power mic..There was nobody cooler than me back then,,lol..it was a lot of fun. Im going to look around for a unit at a flea market.....Thanks Tommy

    Wow! That brought back some memories. Used to run a mobile back in the 70's and 80's. It came in handy every time I drove the Alcan Highway to and from Alaska and the lower 48. Thinking about getting a unit before I move and drive down soon.

    Too funny. I was going through some of the old stuff in the basement at my parents' house a few months ago and came across a couple of the old mobile CBs that we used to have in the cars back in the 70s. I boxed them up with the antennas and brought them home with the intention of trying to figure out if I can actually use them for a shtf situation. I didn't find the old base unit (yet) though. The mobiles are still sitting out in the garage. Now you've got me thinking about it again. We used to have tons of fun with the CBs back then. I'm still thinking I might try to get my basic ham license though. I think in a grid down situation that will be a more viable resource. Thanks for bringing back some fun memories Tommy! - All the best. ~ Theresa

      A "basic ham license" will be all but useless.in a grid down situation. Granted you get "some" 10 meter privileges with that basic license, but there will be many more people on cb than 10 m ham especially in your local area. Talking to another country on 10m will likely do nothing to help you in a shtf. Being able to have a communication network in YOUR local area on cb however, will. Local 2 meter repeaters will go down along with the cell towers. Cb is better suited for shtf than ham radio.

    Hey tommy, Im a ham and started on Cb, build your self a yagi beam and have some fun with the extra directional distance. I would by a transceiver maybe a ft 101 with valves it is hardened for EMP, one opened up and keep it for SHTF, but use it on cb bands.

    Howdy and blessings Tommy,
    I like the idea of a CB for emergency comm, I have even built a EMP proof, portable unit using a .50 ammo can to mount the radio in, 30' of old cable TV coax with a telescoping antenna (giving the user the ability to run the antenna up a tree or building), then I used a voltage converter to adjust voltage from 110 to 12volt and quick disconnect power leads making it able to plug into a wall socket or a car cig lighter or right to a car battery. Pretty handy in my opinion and about 10lbs. Old solid state radios that use crystals instead of chips are just one more guard against EMP. One other bonus…..NO government license needed!! Great video Tommy, thanks brother.

    Hi! I can speak from our experience here in PR after being devastated by Hurricane Maria & the CB system went down as well. Only one tower survived & in only one portion of the island were they able to use it. The first two or three weeks after Maria were horrible. Even now the communications are so bad.

    CB is 11 meters, which can reach around the world given proper conditions... Just like 10 and 12 meter HAMs can... Weather freq are in the 2 Meter band ... with your rig cqan hear it but not talk on it ... CB is a good part of a well rounded COMM plan. IS HAM a good option, of course it is... b ut NOT the only option... even FRS/GMRS has a place... BTW good video.

    I recently picked up a couple of handheld CB units a Thrift Shops for about $5 each for family to use locally in case of emergency. I need to get a decent base station though. Many CB's today include Weather Band access. Many dedicated Weather Band radios can be programed for "alarms" when transmitted. We just had one for severe thunderstorms heading our way.Regarding balloons going up, I might suggest a Shortwave unit as well. Now SW is declining in use BUT for news outside the USA it maybe your only source besides "big brother". SW units are not real expensive and like many types of radio (like CB) the antenna is pretty much one of the most critical things you and for SW a simple long wire will yield great results.

    You can find Mobile CB's at any truck stop but you will find in most cases cheaper online.. in the 20 plus years i was driving truck i used cobra brand solid mobile units they do have mobile units that have the side bands.. And yes 19 is where you will find truckers weird how the use of CB's with truckers has gone down many might have them but not turn them on unless something in front of them slows them up.

    Having a CB base and mobile, as well as a ham base and mobiles (both boat anchor and handhelds) can run off car batteries with proper cabling, for great telecomms. And no need for licensing with the CB and the FRS (no need for preppers to have GMRS - 5 year $80 FCC license). FRS also have encoding for semi-security xmissions. John ... KJ6YYC/AE/VE(/FE/TI).

    I had a CB back in the 70's in my car but as I got older the new wore off and when I traded cars the CB did not make the transition and I got away from it. I did use it to communicate back when and in a grid down situation I could pick it back up again if need be. I would have to start over from nothing today as I no longer have any of the radios or acc's.

    I am a amateur radio operator. I have no interest nor will I never, ever use 7/8ths of the stuff I had to know for the test. I'm not going to "bounce" signals off the moon, send radio teletype, or " repair the internal components of my mo$t expen$ive rig. Besides my hand is too shaky nowadays It's a pain and I've been around radios since I was 13.
    If you're in a prepper group and your intention is to coordinate with others in the group CB is a inexpensive and simple way. Your NOT going to get everyone, more likely anyone in the group to study to pass the technician test. CBs are good for about 5 miles maybe 10 on a good day, depending on the terrain. I live very close, actually too close to a interstate and rarely hear truckers unless there's a wreck or construction, and foul mouths about the same. Besides, why are you on channel 19 anyway? There's 39 other ones, pick a quiet one! You can also gather Intel from just listening, especially if any marauders are using them! Marauders with rifles and CBs were hunters with rifles and CBs before SHTF!
    You want more range? go GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service). Radios are similar to CB/Amateur mobile radios, Midland has their MXT line, 3 models from $100 to $250 each. They are UHF, very quiet. It requires a license, mine cost $70 good for 10 years, NO TEST, covers all immediate family, down to your inlaws! Afraid that the "government" is going to know where your at? < whispering > Sorry to tell you this, they already know!
    Whatever you do, don't believe those bubble packaged "FRS-GMRS" walkie talkies at W-M and sport stores that claim "36 mile range" Ain't happening folks. They are good for about your yard, if you have a small yard! Power output is 500 milli-watts, that's 1/2 a watt! They are TOYS! Give em to your kids! (I have two of them, I use them because they have NOAA weather frequencies!)

    • @ericblair3009
      @ericblair3009 6 років тому

      I concur with what you said.... the frs ect is good for the young ones and gives them practice.... With a good antenna ect you can HEAR a good distance to be able to gather intel from the raiders who THINK you can not hear them because of the secret squirrel 'privacy' code they are using... [btw this was mostly for you NON Hams daha001 already knows this ;] ]

    What do u know about dongles ? i heard you can tap into satellites directly for weather , possibly even get maps with weather, also they can map out plains transponders on a map, good for off grid

    • @BackwoodsLaw
      @BackwoodsLaw 6 років тому

      The USB Dongles work, the issue is if you are not an amateur radio guy it is a very steep learning curve for you to use it. You will need to either buy expensive antennas or learn how to build them yourself. You are able to get the weather satellites, but it is entirely dependent upon your computer being up and you being able to keep it up for the time that the satellite is transitioning overhead. For now, yes you can also pick up the aircraft transponders and they will plot, but that is again dependent upon your computer being up and running so you can use all the software required to run either of these systems.

    CQ DX is usually calling someone from another continent. Probably no one answered earlier because you were on the same continent? I got my ham license last year, I can only suggest that everyone seriously interested in comms for prepps should have one. CB is not suitable for that because you are limited to the 11m band which currently and in the next years is dead in the ionosphere, thus no bouncing or "skipping" possible.

      You will need to check and see what the public safety in your area is on. If you are close to one of the top 100 largest cities in the US you will likely need to get one of the $500+ scanners that can pick up 700 and 800 mhz channels that are digital and using APCO phase 2 Voice security. They can still lock you out of listening if they want, but that is the best you could do in one of those areas. If you are not close to one of those cities then you could get Baofung and find the freqs for your local public safety on radio reference.

  • @0utrider

    Yeah get your technician class amateur radio license, not only will you have access to some great frequencies that do not have nasty foul mouth over-modulated high power CB trolls on it, you also learn quite a bit about electronics and radio wave propagation. I am a general class Ham and would like to take the time to go ahead and get my extra class to open up all the areas of Ham radio...CBs are okay for local talk but they are not great for hand held radios, 2 meter or 440cm is the best for walkie talkie traffic. Also it is pretty easy to set up a local repeater for use at a distance about 50 miles, depending on the mountains...behind the mountain, poor propagation, top of the mountain great propagation.

    • @0utrider
      @0utrider 6 років тому

      Yah its possible. I hit the repeater from Decatur IL to Biloxi Mississippi during an band opening ducting event, I was using a 12 element yagi. The guy I talked to was on a hand held in the middle of the gulf on an oil rig, too cool. That yagi and 50 watts on 2 meter would really reach out there.

      Robert, Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I take it then you have an Amateur Radio License then??? Naw your a CBer ain't you, maybe even one of those 1000 watt Alligators running down the highway in a "Big Rig", am I close??? (Alligator = all mouth no ears) Yeah I grew up like Tommy did with a CB in the house, even remember my dads callsign that I had to use, that's how old I am. Now I have a Ham call sign and it means quite a bit to me, it took quite a bit of work to get it and I would not let just any joker ruin the hobby by doing what you say above, that behavior is not tolerated on Ham Radio, we are self policing and have the frequency detection gear and know how to use it, you can run but you can't hide a radio frequency.

      TR Outrider Well I have a General Class ham license and had a ham license since 1995, and yep there’s assholes every year and on ham radio too. Also the repeater would be gone in a true disaster and useless, a lot more people will have access to cb. So get off your high ham horse and calm down, people can use cb radio and you can use ham radio and all can be happy. I’ve heard the same vulgar nonsense on all the hf ham bands that’s on cb. To reiterate, there are assholes everywhere and if you can’t see them then you’re probably the asshole. Good day and “73”. ;)

    You are in luck. I just happen to have my CB Talk "baseball" cards from the 70's. Just to brush up on the CB language. So on the back of the cards is a CB Talk Dictionary. I'm sure everyone still uses the same phrases now. So here are a couple examples- Go breaker= Go ahead and speak. Green apple = Novice CB'er. Green stamps = money. Seventy-three = best wishes. Beaver = Girl. Big 10-4 = To agree. Guitar town = Nashville Tenn. Base = CB rig at fixed location. 6's & 8's = good luck. Back out = End transmission. On ship = illegal long distance transmission. Motion lotion = fuel. Sidewinder = Single side band cb radio. Negative= No. Negatori = No. Seat cover = attractive women or girl in car. Well that gives you an idea how old I am. Now if you use these definitions you too can sound like an expert cb'er. Er.
