I’ve just bought my Model 2 back from a mate after 30 years storage- the strings were nearly in tune and the J90c pickup still kicks arse! Great guitars!!😊
The new logo on Fender's Charvels is a throwback to the USA made Charvel's of pre 1986. They are still a little different. The biggest difference I have found is the necks' shapes on the Fender made Charvels. I love the neck on my 86 model 2.🤘
Wouldn’t it be cool if fender put the toothpaste logo on the charvels?!?!
@Eddie Jr I had an 89 or 90 with that logo. It wasn't my thing, but I could appreciate it if they did re-release it.
I own a 1988 Model 6 in black. Ive had it since 1993. Found it at a pawn shop outside of Camp Lejune in NC. Best guitar in my collection.

Love it. I bought my Pearl White Charvel Model 6 new off the rack in 1988. It is one of the best guitars I’ve ever played, and I’ll die with it in my hands. :) coupled with my GK250ML it is a 1980’s metal shred factory.

Thanks for the video!! 🤟I got a Charvel that looks like that model 5 way back in 1988. Made in Japan. I’ve never been able to figure out what model it was until now. Mine is black and doesn’t have the 2 fret dots at neck humbucker but otherwise looks same. Lost the whammy bar years ago and played the h3ll out of it over the years. Thank you very much for the video!!
You could also do all of the amps you own! I'd watch that!

My issue with Charvel by Fender is the Fender headstock. I want my Charvel to have a proper point. I'd take your 5 over the 6. I had a sweet Model 2 in burgundy mist. I sold it to my brother-in-law, so at least it's still in the family.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think charvel copied the fender headstock way back in the 70s. Didn't EVH and Jake e lee have fender headstock on their charvel guitars?

I have a mint 1986 model 5 with the original case. I got if off a woman who's uncle died and he bought it, never played it, and stored it under the bed until she sold it to me. It's the white version and it plays and sounds amazing!. I run it through my marahal dsl-40.
Very informative thank you, the only guitar I’ve got left from the 80’s is a Aria Pro 2 RS Knight Warrior, I bought new in 1885 with a Kahler Tremolo and a H-S-S pickup configuration on it. I still play it but could use a fret job on it.
I have a Charvel/Jackson model 4. I have owned the guitar for over 35 years and love the guitar with 1 problem. Tuning stability with the Kahler tremolo. I have had several pro's set up the guitar all with tuning stability issues. Maybe that's why Vanhalen used Floyd rose.
From one King to another...cheers!!! My first real guitar was a 1987 Charvel Model 3A in black. Looks very similar to the Model 5 you have there. Wish I still had it. Always looking for one used and if I ever find one...the wife won't be happy. :)
I have a Fender contemporary telecaster made in Japan. 1987. Kahler, HSS. Also has the 3 switches. The humbucker switch is a 3 way allowing a coil split. Great guitar

Back in 07-08 I saw these Model 6's go for about $500-600. I picked up a Charvel 475 back in the day for $300, now they are over $1-2k. About a year or two ago I bought a 1990 Japanese Fusion Jackson which is extremely well built and I am very happy with it.
Great vid. I’m also a huge Charvel fan boy. I’ve owned several of the 80’s models over the years but my favorite is still my ‘88 model 6. I bought it brand new in ‘88 for $600. There’s just something about the pickups and the neck that make it a phenomenal playing guitar. Don’t think I’ll ever part with it.

IMC bought Charvel in 1989 and Fender bought it in 2002.
i remember jackson pickups being very sought after bitd
every charvel i play is great , in the store or the ones i have at home . the Blue DK24HSS i played recently was my fave .

But there is only so much gear to review, so much all sounda the same eventualy.
But thw kniwledge gaine dthrough the early years still jeeds to be shared.
I sold all my fendsrs and gibsons, there so luch beter lut there for way way less.
Gotta say I'd like the 6 more for the binding & Kahler but the 5 sounds better.
This guy again with some wild guessing on these guitars. One of the main drivers in Grover making Jackson pickups was supply issues in getting the pickups he was using, mainly Duncans. It wasn't some tone quest as suggested here. While the Model series are great, the real Charvels were the late 70s through 1984. This dive into Charvels sounds more like a surface level review.

There. e is a reason american conoanies sent work overseass.
They made kickass guitars and still do.
And now with cnc. It is hard to make a bad guitar hahahahaha.

TTK. What brand and value are the pots in your model 5? I have a stock rare, 1988 model 5Fx,stock JT-6 trem, and J-95 and J-100 pickups. Ive had it since 1990, so it was 2 years old. It was a HS Garaduation gift from my parents. Its super clean and im confident that its probably the cleanest one out there. I belive mine came with 500k Alpha pots from factory. I want to replace the pots with same stock pots,so i want to make sure of what the stock brand and value of the pots are

Back then we had name brand, or house brand.
We didnt have blutique yet at all.
Ibanez made amazing house brand and schalkers were awesome also.
So sad ao kany got tossed in favor of duncan or dimarzio.

You have to many commercials in your show . That's the reason I can't watch. If I want to see commercials I watch regular TV

Have an 86 Model 6 with Kahler. Cobalt blue. I have an 88/89 with the thicker neck in the Pearl White. I have a 90' 475 XL Delixe Exotic w/toothpaste logo and Schaller. I have had 3 different model 4s previously. I have many others but I love the charvels the most. And though both my 6s are sick.. the 475 screams and for whatever reason just fits my hands better. Has an FU brass tone block.
Not a better run of guitars exist

If they reissued the model 6 with a kahler and original pups I'd get one. I'd want a coil tap on the bucker.
I have the same 86 Model 5, same color but with the Kahler.
Westonw made some killer guitars back then also with kahler spiders. Peaveyey had amazing usa made super strats, hamer was killing it.. So so many, vestax? Or vesta? Had one of those that kicked ass, takamine made. Some amazing electrics for a few years..
Back then most were te same guitars different name as theybwere all made in the same factory.

I purchased a few model 2 guitars back in the 80’s. First was 86-87 black with Jackson Charvel tremolo and second was a white model 2. Cost in that year was $295 with hard shell case. They were great gig ready guitars, still have the white one. Bought a model 3 a year later for $350. In the eighties Kramer focus 1000 and Charvel model 2 was what all working guitar players played.

Thanks for this vid. I wanted to pick up a old Charvel and did some research which led me to this video and it helped me decide to pick up a local 87 Model 5. Great shape with the orig silver chain saw case. I love it and it feels and sounds great! Thanks again for the info and opinions you have on this era of guitars.
