Hi Larry. I'm a self proclaimed dinosaur who's never owned or been interested in owning a cell phone. I do, however, have a tablet which I use at home. I believe that a lot of people are slaves to their devices. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm walking on a sidewalk and have to move out of the way because the person walking towards me is not paying attention because they're looking down on their phone. I could go on and on about how people have let this technology affect their behaviour for the worse. Mini rant over.
Saw Sinead in @90; she told us stop smoking i cant sing; and stop yelling i can't hear...( Best concert experience. I love an artist being...you know).
I’m ok with cell phones for responsible people. For a huge music lover and someone that has been to over 100 shows I can see different views and I’ve seen it all. I even was at the Jack white concert where they made you put them in a locked mini bag. For me, I enjoy taking the quick video or photos to share with friends and family and but not to film the full show. I don’t think people should be shamed for bringing one or asked to be removed just for taking photos or videos since it’s their right to have one and if the show didn’t specify. If Nick Cave or Tool hate phones, then go the Jack White route and say don’t bring. If an artist doesn’t specify then they shouldn’t complain. Some of my friends also carry their phone in shows for emergency or if they have young kids with baby sitters. Again it’s a fine line and some people abuse it for for the average fan, I don’t see the harm.
I sometimes walk directly towards people who are walking whilst on their phone, just to see if they notice me - they have such little awareness of their surroundings, it would be easy for pick-pockets
I have a number of photos I took at concerts and shows in the late 1990s-early 2000s, but in the majority of cases I actually asked for the performers' permission before doing so. That's how I met the guys in Poco, Pat Travers, and blues musicians like Charlie Musselwhite and Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women, among others. But I used a small 35mm camera, not a cell phone. I have a cell phone, but I turn it off before the show starts and don't turn it on until the show is over.
You raise a very good point with regards to cellphone / camera use at music concerts. Like yourself, I've been attending concerts for many years, starting in the early 80's and can remember when seeing a concert was a true experience. All the moments were stored in your head and shared over conversations with fellow fans who also attended the concert. Then slowly in the 90's, you were seeing people bringing disposable cameras to concerts and taking pictures for personal keepsakes. And now here were are in 2024 and literally everyone has their cellphone / camera out when the "hit" song is played by the band or artist. The irony I find in all of this is, if it weren't for people recording videos at concerts or in their everyday lives, then platforms like UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. would NOT exist. So the question we must ask ourselves is, if we TRULY want to go back to the way it use to be, then let's be honest with ourselves and stop posting on UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc......just my opinion.
I've never had a cell phone Larry,we did have a phone that my wife got for our car for emergencies but I never did use it,as my son would say I'm from the stone age and he's right! Bob
I don’t agree with its usage at concerts but we tend to get a little too self-righteous about it, especially as we get older. Last Sunday was one of those cloudless sunny days. I went for my usual walk - across the road from my house kids were playing soccer, others were riding their bikes; I walked by the creek and three boys were fishing - according to us older people those things don’t happen anymore 😊 …. of course there are more distractions nowadays but kids will always be kids. I’m 55 and I remember my old man going on about kids watching too much TV, usually said whilst he was sitting in front of the TV - nothing changes 😂
Time tunneling it back to the Soviet era: the Soviets had jamming devices that could jam radio and television signals from Western European countries into the "Iron Curtain" countries and the USSR itself. That technology can be upgraded to include digital audio and video devices, i.e., mobile phones for small areas such as theaters and large arenas.
I really hate phones at concerts during the actual show. If you want a photo, take it at the end. I went to a small Paul McCartney concert several years ago that the team running it took all the phones off of us. No one complained!
The situation of peoples' faces being glued to their smartphones is actually a *physically dangerous* one for me, when I go out, by myself, in my power wheelchair. I have Cerebral Palsy and am unable to drive a car, so the power chair is a main mode of transportation for me. People who are glued to their smartphones sometimes literally walk right into me!
I love Nick Cave…I can’t believe how many people watch a concert through their phone..it is ridiculous…The problem is our phones are also our tickets these days. Get back to issuing paper tickets and ban cells from the concert venues.
I feel guilty taking a photo of the stage when any of the performers are trying to do their jobs, much less filming during the show. Usually I take a photo of the marquee when I’m going to see a band, and maybe the stage right before they start. I love it when you have to put your phone in a locked bag when you get your ticket scanned. I honestly hope more artists eventually do that, so they don’t have to plead with these idiots. I am going to fewer and fewer concerts these days.
I take another approach , as long as you are not in ones face , bothering another from enjoying .., who cares .., someone payed good money to be there , if they want to take pictures , film the concert , it is their prerogative ..., someone singing along might be distracting , someone headbanging , someone smoking weed , oh no lets ban it all , piss off , let folks do their thing .., again as long as you are not fully bothering anyone
and PS I like Jack dont own a cell phone , nor my wife .., now is reading a book on the bus being alien , is listening to your MP3 , back in the day your Walkman .., in the 40s and 50s the man of the house lost in his newspaper ...,
Its a long time ago now but, I once had a Neil Young concert ruined for me because people around me were talking on their phones telling people about the concert. I could at least tell that Mr Young and his band were 'on fire' but the idiots on their phones wouldn't have known. Of course, the other objection I have is that people talk to each other while the music going and the more they booze they consume, the more noise they make. Finally, I am old enough to have seen The Birthday Party live on a few occasions, in the days before cell phones. If the cell phone had existed then and been out and up, those shows would not have seemed so primal.
I use a cell occasionally for work, but I've never owned or carried one myself. I refuse to be an appendage to a mobile device, always at its beck and call.
I absolutely despise when we go out to dinner and see a whole family next to me engaged in their mobile devices instead of open conversation. Sad state of life we live in nowadays.
I have never heard of him! He is CLASSLESS for swearing like that! Women , in the audience! From now on : they should be told no cellphones at this concert! There must be a better way than this 🤡 handled it! God bless you and Molly, your buddy 🙏 Joey in Cleveland
What does being a woman have to do with anything??? What are we some damsel in distress that cant handle a little swear word? I cuss like a sailor sometimes...lol
I get it it must be annoying for the artist but I don't know how you can stop it now. I usually do a couple shots here and there and some video for my memory. But filming a whole show is ridiculous. I agree if the artist says put it away, you put it away
I don't enjoy having my field of vision obscured by a load of people with their phones out and UP - getting not great quality audio and video that they'll maybe watch a few times and milk on social media. Be in the moment, enjoy the music, dance maybe. It just weirds me out that people don't seem to want to be in reality to such an extent that they're needing to experience in this bizarre second-hand way.
People want their Instagram followers to think they're having fun more than they care about actually having fun. It's so vain and depressing. Take one photo or a short video early into the set and then put your phone away and enjoy the show! No reason to spend more time looking at your phone than at the band during a show.
I've never understood why people do this as most tours are filmed at one or two shows somewhere along the line. I find it annoying as part of the audience when this happens. When you pay premium prices to see these artists and you then spend the whole time filming it on your phone, what is the point? Enjoy the performance, whether it be a gig or a classical concert or a stage production. I have only seen one artist/band/ actor stop the performance to politely ask someone to stop filming and put their phone away and then asked everyone else to make sure their phones were either on silent or switched off, and that was Benedict Cumberbatch during a performance of Hamlet some years ago. It is disrespectful to the performers and to fellow audience members, and I fully agree with Jack White on this subject.

Love the way the violinist handled it. Good man!
the Nokia duet
Love when Nick performs Push The Sky Away & has audience members come on stage to help him sing the song. It's a memorable moment for all .
Larry, I am on my cell phone when I watch your videos! 🤪
I like Jack White's approach!. I also loved the violinist playing the Nokia ringtone, that was an epic response! 😆👍xxx.

This is why Bob Dylan bans phones.
And Jack White
I want devil horns at concerts banned next! 😂
I mentioned you in the video, so you owe me $20! :D
Saw on the news the other day and this person was walking and had his head down looking at his phone and almost walked in front of a commuter train. 😎

The biggest curse of modern times. Mobile phones and social media. God help us all.............
A smartphone is quite the drug.
(I'm a weirdo like Jack in this regard, strangely don't miss the addiction machine either).

@@AnthonyKiyola great take

I never understood it either. I get taking a few quick pictures or clips throughout, but is that seriously not enough for these people?
I really hate phones at concerts during the actual show. If you want a photo, take it at the end.

Reminds me of that Sparks song iPhone.
Yeah, I miss the old days when we didn't see phones at concerts, and clubs because they

Of course, the only reason we got to see this footage is because someone recorded it with their cell phone. 😁
I agree cell phone 📱 put them away and enjoy the show. That’s hard earned tickets you paid to see them. (any band). 😊

I miss the old days when people just held up a cigarette lighter, now that looked beautiful! 🕯️ Cell phone lights 📱 have no charm! 🍻🤠🎵🎶🎼

Swearing has its place sometimes, and Nick Cave is a great artist. Thanks.
It's sad that so many women are ruined forever because they heard a swear word
Nick Cave is one of the greatest songwriters of the last 40 years. You never heard of him because you listen to bad music.
What does being a woman have to do with anything??? What are we some damsel in distress that cant handle a little swear word? I cuss like a sailor sometimes...lol

When I saw King Crimson at the RAH , he stopped performing and told everybody to put their phones away , well done Robert!
Tools singer does
What is your phone number Larry ?
