Wow, when you walked near the wall the true scale of this project comes through. THat wall is HUGE! Beautiful work!
Thank you!
yup. I was hoping he would do that. Perspective is a bitch sometimes.
BISKIT Garcia 😂😄🥓🥙👩🌾
@BISKIT Garcia That was my thought as well. Before he got near the wall I was like: "that's a cute little wall", then when he got close to the wall it was: "holy mackerel it's the Great Wall of China."
I just gotta say that this has got to be one of the best explained introductions in the history of landscaping videos. Also very good work on the project.
That was done beautifully and the professionalism is outstanding...I mean WOW! That was a huge job and probably costly but worth every dollar. Great job.
Thanks a lot Emily !
Finally found the natural retaining wall vid. Looks great, thanks for spending time uploading these helpful videos!
Wow, excellent work. Having done a few of these near Breckenridge CO, you obviously know what you are doing. Old video, but a great one. Thank you.
Thank you !!
Great , I'm from Boston , I can tell, your channel is the best . The information that you share to all of us , is incredible
Thanks for your thoughts! Much appreciated
Thanks for making great videos! I started landscaping 2 years ago and now it is my whole life.. learned some great tips so far..
Awesome- Glad these videos are helping.
Excellent
Wow, this is almost EXACTLY what we have in Warren NJ. I would LOVE to do something like this. Our slope is significantly more steep though, with rock scramble throughout.
The most beautiful thing ive ever seen haha. This should be done everywhere to parks or areas where it looks like a dump.
you are doing a great job, Stanley.
That wall is awesome. 👍🏻
Thanks!
Dude, you are awesome! Redundant but true comment for the algorithm. 🤷🏻♀️
That looks awesome. I've always wanted my own company and to start doing side work. You def gave me some ideas with your videos. Now I just need warm weather and customers lol
Very nice and giving of you to make videos like this one... much appreciated!
That was a nice transformation.
Thank you !
Excellent work!
Awesome video, my favorite video you've posted in my humble opinion.
Amazing work.
Thank you !
your a good man stanley
Looks like this is a 2014 video. Wondering what was the final cost of this project then? Considering something much like this on a 2021 new house build.
nice job Stanley, I'm facing same problem, I wish have a expert like you here.
Thank you- Best of luck with your project.
Those rocks are so huge, it wasn't even apparent until about 6:50 when you're standing in front of them directly.
👍
You are impressive. Great work and inspiration! Thanks...
great explanations and looks great after all!
Thanks!
@@Dirtmonkey how much to do this for 77 long 26 high
Wow that's awesome
Damn, that’s a nice makeover.
Yes thank you got that watched video
Looks great! That was a while ago huh?
Thank you for your fabulous video. How did you do the drainage of this backyard?
That was really impressed good job.
juan montan Thanks!
well done fantastic job.
Looks great!
Will Best Thanks!
astonishing.........loved it
Thank you!
What did this cost roughly ? This is my issue as well. But first, i need to get my foundation dug out and waterproofed. I would like this also after. Very interested.
nice work buddy
+Ny plantings Thank you!
OMG I've been watching you so long that YOU LOOK LIKE A BABY!!! LOL But still great content. :D
Good videos you make,helpful.
Thank you!
How much did this project cost? I wish this could be my backyard
Yeah. I think "they had a budget" meant they had way more money than I could come up with. Purchasing, transporting and setting that many boulders is not cheap.
Damn, what would a budget for something like this look like?? That is impressive.
What about the opposite with the hill sloping away from the house? Whats the typical cosf of a retaining wall?
How much does a project like this cost? I would like to get this done on a home that has the same sloped backyard but the slope is not that deep and install a brick retainer wall instead of the boulders.
Budget a minimum of 25k. One of the things that is common to these types of videos is that no one ever tells you how much it cost them or how much they charged.
Hi - Stanley can this be done with smaller "New England Round Wallstone" instead of large boulders? I know this video is 8 years old but I have watched maybe 20 of your videos now and this is my exact scenario here. I can get the excavating done but don't have access to the equipment long enough to move boulders around, hence, smaller stone. What do you think?
Those random stones going vertical through both courses....😍
Good job!!
+debra123ist Thank you!
Great video!
Thanks😄👍
You mentioned drainage issues at the start of the video, was it handled during excavation so that the bottom of the retaining wall/stones were at a lower level from the house? Did you install anything to handle the water? Looks great BTW.
Can you please explain what you did with the landscape fabric?
+HawkeyeMO72 Under the mulch? For weed separation.
GREAT VIDEOS
Appreciate it!
Watching the crane trying to pick up the rocks had me laughing so hard.
What makes me laugh is you think that's a crane
@@b1gchr1s29 crane
Wow where did you get that sod that sod looks amazing what is it Kentucky blue rye blend?
Just as a matter of interest, how did the project cost please. Thanks
Freakin sweet
Thanks Monty!
Nice!
good idea
Thanks😄👍
Love your videos! We Live in St Paul, MN and have a city lot with the standard 4' steep slope to the city sidewalk. We are considering a project similar to this, on a much smaller scale of course. I'm concerned about access to the the gas, water and sewer lines that would be under the wall if anything would need to be done with them after the wall is up. Would it be a much bigger problem if we had to access any of these utilities after the wall is put in?
Reach out to me via email!
I wonder what something like this cost?
How do you find a good contractor to do this?
where did you redirect the water to?
How much was the excavation?
Would it be possible to do this without a retaining wall? For example have a flat area then a slope to another flat area? Or is a retaining wall always needed
I would think it depends on the available area. Dirt has a certain angle at which hills of it will tend to collapse, and it also has to support whatever loads are at the top. Erosion is also a concern.
How much was this project ?
Can anyone recommend a contractor in Santa Cruz, CA that can do this kind of work?
if it's properly drained those walls won't slide. right?
Right.
Awesome
Thank you!
Very cool :)
How much would a project like that cost?
Any idea approximate tonnage of boulders?
How much is a project of that scale?
do you have a video on slope stabilization? or is it just the videos you have on retaining walls.
I have a video where we are fixing a big mudslide using georgid.
Are you putting gravel behind the walls or anything besides dirt?
+Dalton Teeple Not at this site. We Did not need drainage backfill in this case.
It was clay based soil and the customer was going to plant the joint spacing.
Great video, thank you for posting it.
When would drainage backfill be needed?
34k for this wall. what would the cost have been for the wall to be poured concrete wall?
Good question/point. Probably a LOT cheaper.
But would not have been as strong
Did you need foundations and drainage material behind the boulders or not necessary?
Yes- you do in some cases but not always
In which state you work
What would you say the average weight of those boulders are? 1,000-2,000lbs I'm guessing?
Double that.
Not understanding how words work. Title refers to retaining wall singular yet at least 2 are shown in thumbnail & video. Plural uses "s".
Try building blue stone walls
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Stan, Can you refer a contarctor for grading and walls in New Jersey? Thanks
roughly how much would something like the cost
+only1me314 roughly $34,000
I want to build a runway
Where are u guys at?
What was the budget for this project? We have a similar situation
Julie Catherine me to I was wondering the same
what type of stone is that? do you ever use Moss rock?
I have used Moss rock- you can make your own version simply enough.
what was a cost for the entire job? Thanks
approximately $34,000
I need same help
Is that a model 40 Towtem grapple on your Daewoo?
I will have to check and get back to you on this.
👍
Thank you !
I'd love to know what something like this cost
$500-$700
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nice
u could have used cement blocks that was way cheaper...
Nice concept but this may eventually fail. #1, you said absolutely nothing about keying in the 1st and 2nd courses of rock. The 1st course needs to be at minimum buried 2/3rd in to the base rock with TWO rows of rock. #2, the 1st and 2nd course bases NEED TO BE Class V size rock. In other words, BIG rock. This prevents slippage of the slope. #3, you did absolutely no base row anchoring, aka Deadman's Anchor . #4, you mentioned it but did not show/address how you handled drainage. If there is issues, you need to slope the terraces away from the home &, if needed, add drainage tile to move the water away.
As a military engineer and natural resources planner, small things like these either make or break a project. And it doesn't cost that much more.
also, did you break up the soil where the grass/sod was installed, or just lay it down on top of the over-compacted ground from the mini-ex going over it during the construction phase. Roots need water, air, and nutrients(organic matter). just wondering
Guy H. Guy please post your own video on your methodology! Stan - this is great. Thanks

OMG WHAT IS THAT?
Alot of the top boulders are not locked in place. Sorry to say but i'm not impressed. I've loved some of your other work, but having the round side of a builder facing down. on the boulder below is not how its done. All boulders has to be set so they lock in place. Also its a good idea to lay the long side of the boulder into the back side of the wall. Gaps in the wall cant be bigger than your fist or dirt will go through. You said yourself that you dont use cloth behind a wall to stop the dirt, This is also the case for boulder walls. How the wall looks is up to taste, Personally i like when they also have smaller stones in them.
That must have cost more than the house.
there wasnt enough video on how boulders were placed. I learned nothing.
