    Hi - Stanley can this be done with smaller "New England Round Wallstone" instead of large boulders? I know this video is 8 years old but I have watched maybe 20 of your videos now and this is my exact scenario here. I can get the excavating done but don't have access to the equipment long enough to move boulders around, hence, smaller stone. What do you think?

    Love your videos! We Live in St Paul, MN and have a city lot with the standard 4' steep slope to the city sidewalk. We are considering a project similar to this, on a much smaller scale of course. I'm concerned about access to the the gas, water and sewer lines that would be under the wall if anything would need to be done with them after the wall is up. Would it be a much bigger problem if we had to access any of these utilities after the wall is put in?

    • @jdotoz
      @jdotoz 3 роки тому +2

      I would think it depends on the available area. Dirt has a certain angle at which hills of it will tend to collapse, and it also has to support whatever loads are at the top. Erosion is also a concern.

    Nice concept but this may eventually fail. #1, you said absolutely nothing about keying in the 1st and 2nd courses of rock. The 1st course needs to be at minimum buried 2/3rd in to the base rock with TWO rows of rock. #2, the 1st and 2nd course bases NEED TO BE Class V size rock. In other words, BIG rock. This prevents slippage of the slope. #3, you did absolutely no base row anchoring, aka Deadman's Anchor . #4, you mentioned it but did not show/address how you handled drainage. If there is issues, you need to slope the terraces away from the home &, if needed, add drainage tile to move the water away.
    As a military engineer and natural resources planner, small things like these either make or break a project. And it doesn't cost that much more.

    • @himbergerd
      @himbergerd 5 років тому

      also, did you break up the soil where the grass/sod was installed, or just lay it down on top of the over-compacted ground from the mini-ex going over it during the construction phase. Roots need water, air, and nutrients(organic matter). just wondering

    Alot of the top boulders are not locked in place. Sorry to say but i'm not impressed. I've loved some of your other work, but having the round side of a builder facing down. on the boulder below is not how its done. All boulders has to be set so they lock in place. Also its a good idea to lay the long side of the boulder into the back side of the wall. Gaps in the wall cant be bigger than your fist or dirt will go through. You said yourself that you dont use cloth behind a wall to stop the dirt, This is also the case for boulder walls. How the wall looks is up to taste, Personally i like when they also have smaller stones in them.
