I always wanted one of these. They looked perfect in white with the tinted black windows. The standard version was surprisingly nippy but was so high up on the front suspension. I love how the GTI has the badge above the rear arches,it looks proper cool.

Kangarooing: I’d try some injector cleaner for a full tank if you hadn’t done that already, also the throttle wire as they sometimes have too much play on old Pugs even from new, but they are easy adjustable by the throttle body. Just pull the shim and adjust until you got max 1-2mm of play. Just my guessing here!

Two things that improved the throttle response on my 19911.6 GTI : Injectors cleaned and Superchips ECU. New chip made a big difference.
Still remember spinning it on the brakes into a roundabout!

I had the petrol tank issue on mine back in the day. Had the torsion bar out and gave it a good going over. I managed to get a length of 15mm pipe lagging between the petrol tank and it worked a treat!!👍

My uncles bet mate had a laser green one of these back in the day. I remember going to a Peugeot owners club day with them at Silverstone in it and seeing the Peugeot touring cars going out.
Red Sharpie pen on the felt at the top of the door cards - brings them up like new. Also, Kiwi liquid shoe polish, with the sponge head on the black trims. Lasts ages, cheap and really easy to apply. 👍

I think the throttle cable from the 90's is ready to be pitched, either rust jammed or cable wires are fraying and catching and creating a ratchet effect so all of the above. Those rims, alloys, wheels are so cool. I had a 1.9 n/a '94 Escort and it was great, I just drove it with my early bad shifting habits, and leaving it in 5th and coming to a stop would lock the shifter in place, and would require a restart to release. This occured every time I came to a stop at an exit ramp intersection, with a big semi behind me. One day while in a drivethru getting some ice cream with a buddy, the car had a violent squeaky door sound. Not aware of the danger, and the awful correlation of coolant leaking like a dog going for a walk, I dropped my buddy off and drove it home, as more angry parts chimed in, and running 2 cylinders into the driveway. $600 for two years of transportation was just fine.

I drove this for a year or 3 . Loved it a lot but sold it over for a classic Mini.. This was the best sounding car for audio i've owned till today

Battery voltage will tell you whether the battery is knackered. Anything less than 12.5v after standing for a few hours and you need a new one. :) Reckon you're right on the torsion bar - nice one! Audiowise - I'd recommend a Pioneer headunit - (eg. Pioneer MVH-X580DAB) coupled with a set of Alpine components. You should be able to get a set that are factory replacement sizes (that's what I did in my mk2 Golf!) - Google "Alpine Peugeot 205 13cm 5.25". More than good enough for everyday use and means you don't have to butcher the interior.

The clicking on the starter motor can be the voltage to the starter make sure the main power cable from battery is in good condition and there’s a wire for the ignition that goes from the two brown plugs under the steering column into the engine loom then there is a brown plug above the gearbox where it then goes into what’s called the sensor loom that goes to the starter motor. It’s worth checking the voltage as it can be low due to all the connections between the ignition barrel and starter but the weak point is the brown plug above the gearbox it get lots of moisture and oil exposure over the years. I can recommend Miles at Pug Racing for all things 205 related also the 205gtidrivers forum and BakerBM for parts.

Deffo an Alpine. One of the CDE range. brilliant sets, great sound, easy to use and none of the disco light nonsense that so much stuff now has.
Its nice to see you and Pepe bonding , and your introduction to the quirks of Peugeot ownership. They have a tendency to throw up bizarre knocks and rattles, you did more than well to solve that problem so quickly and I'm sure they are born with a mystery oil weep so once again kudos.
The squeaks and rattles of Peugeot interiors is another story, the radio literally is your only option. In dead silence I'm still Haunted by an orchestra of creaks from Peugeots past. They never leave you 😱
But these are the things that give them a feeling of character and dare I say the illusion of life. Pepe seems like a cracking little car very lively.
With regard to the throttle response being a bit snatchy, I had that with both my later model gtis, the 1st one I just put it down to it being a Peugeot and 1 of its quirks, you get used to it and the 2nd one I had tuned at Pug Performance in Hartney Whitney which changed its performance completely and seemed to iron 1st and 2nds on/off bite, I really can't remember what was done as it was many years ago now. So good luck finding it but there definitely is a fix for that 🍻

the play on the lower gearboxmount gives the on/off throttle banging. with a stiffer variant (pu) its all alot more solid.
I need that noise finder tool so bad! If you were in the U.S., I could hook you up with a very nice head unit, but will say that I recently installed a Blaupunkt SQR46DAB in my old Mercedes and I am really happy with it. They aren't cheap, though. Glad you solved the clunk!

In regards to the starter, the infamous brown plug is a common issue for the starter solenoid not connecting properly. Normally you just rewire around the starter wire so it no longer goes through the brown multiplug.
GREMLINS - the 3 rules.....
1) Do not expose the Mogwai to light - especially sunlight as that is fatal.
2) Do not let it come into contact with water.
3) NEVER feed after midnight!!!
Right, joking aside, it is good to see the progress you've made so far and the fun you're now having 😊.
I can offer some advice with regard to stereo systems/speakers:-
If your system has an output of, say, 25 watts × 4 RMS (that is 25 watts hooked up to four speakers) then I recommend that the speakers are capable of double (50 watts RMS). This helps to ensure a lower level of distortion and means you're unlikely to blow a speaker. Blaupunkt is a quality, albeit expensive, speaker I think worth strong consideration.

Mine had that intermittent start problem too. Auto electrician put a solenoid on the starter circuit to boost the power and it's been fine since. Mine also clunked on the rear beam too, but over time it reduced to only occasionally on big bumps. When I first bought the car it was clunking all the time.
Just remembered something else that failed on my E-reg 1.6: the heater matrix. Fairly easy to get out - remove all the plastic under the steering wheel and there was just enough room to slide it out. Unlike my current Mazda3 Sport where the instructions start with removing both front doors.

I enjoy your videos, its a real world perspecitve of owning these older type cars and what you can expect.......Now I want to go out and buy a classic type daily driver so I don't rack up too many miles on the Ferrari!! I was thinking a MKIII Capri, but they aren't exactly cheap or readily available.....

By the way, surprised the local constabulary didn’t come and visit you while you were driving round circles in empty car park with plastic gloves and earphones on....👍😂

Had many 205 gti back in the day. They were well known for kangerooing with an on/off throttle at low revs. It can be smoothed out slightly but not a lot

They did another special colour along with your Miami Blue painted car, it's a beautiful Green. Both colours are fantastic and will only help your car go up in value. I have seen a low mileage car sell for £18,000, but can't find the link to the story. Loving both cars you have just now 👍🏻 the Pug especially!

For the leather, try a steam cleaner. It can help remove the "products" that have been applied over the years.

For exterior plastic trim I wipe it with some ATF it works wonders ,does not last forever , but very easy to apply

Right from the get go I’m like this dude’s as crazy as I am when it comes to tracing a noise! 😀. I stuck I video up on UA-cam looking for opinions on a “woo woo” noise on my old R80 air head beemer... it was the alternator!

Back in '85 I had a bright white 205 Lacoste. I should have kept it, I believe it may be worth more today than I paid for it back then....
I used to own a tuned Mk2 XR2 back in the 90's. You may well remember that the Mk2 XR2's had an unpainted plastic bodykit all over. I used to use WD40 to keep the 'kit' looking nice. I just used to blast the WD40 into a cloth and wipe it all over the bumpers, arches and bodykit sills. Gave it a mild glossy wet look, and made the 'kit' look darker. It was speedy to apply and looked great. With multiple applications, it looked even better with time. I'm still very much a small hot hatch fan. Currently driving the latest turbo Swift Sport. A lot of Swift Sport owners that are familiar with the Pug GTI, do liken the Swift Sport as a modern day equivalent. A Pug GTI of that vintage is obviously going to be a more raw driving experience. But the Swift Sport has a very similar ethos - lightweight and extremely chuckable. The Swift Sport is about as close as you can get to the feel of a 'back in the day' hot hatch in a modern car. The latest Sport is 975kg. Not quite as light as an old school Pug GTI. But definitely the right side of a tonne. I reckon it would be worth your while giving one a test drive - if anything - to compare it to your Pug GTI. Anyway, thanks for the video - great, and interesting content!

Great looking Pug mate. Regarding the throttle response, my money is on the TPS. I know they are two different cars, but on my 84’ Alfa GTV6 i have experienced the same problem once, with a snappy on/off throttle response. It turned out after doing some work, i neglected to reconnect the TPS connector. Essentially the ECM has no way of sensing when the engine is coming of idle, this will affect many things, like acceleration enrichment etc. which would definitely make the engine respond weird to throttle inputs. If you want to test the TPS, it depends on what type your 205 uses. On my GTV6 it basically sensed only 2 positions, namely IDLE, and WOT, these types of TPS are easy to test, as they basically contain 2 open/close contactors inside. You just need to hook up a multimeter to the relevant pins at the TPS itself (with a bit of trial and error you should quickly figure out which pins relate to which position. Usually one pin for ground, and one for WOT & IDLE each) , and move the throttle off idle, and to WOT position, and look for continuity, or a lack thereof. I hope you find the problem without too much hassle, so you can spend more time enjoying Pepe.

It was many years ago - but if I remember rightly I took my 205Gti 1.6 to justgtis.co.uk In an hour or two they took the air flow meter apart and with very small internal adjustments brought the car back to feeling like new. I never had hot starting issues again, I never had idling issues, it gave me a more powerful freer revving car car back and was well worth the money. I'd wack a K&N induction kit in before you go. I seem to remember them operating out of a garage inside a farm and they test drive it afterwards with you in to see if they have got it right. Worth a trip because these guys know absolutely everything about your car! After that add a mild sports rear exhaust and you can't get any sweeter!

Bee's Wax is amazing for the plastic Trim outside of car - lasts a couple of months (depending how many washes).
Good job. When working for a Toyota dealer in the late seventies we had a Celica Mk1 ( when did you last see one of those?) that clicked on left turns. We tried so many things before I noticed a cable tie in the trans tunnel that had not been folded fully so the end stuck out. As the car turned and the drive shaft moved, the cable tie caught on the UJ causing a clicking to be transmitted through the floor! Bonkers.

Hi I had a friend that had a 205 1.9 GII and he had to keep switching the ignition off whilst driving it very hairy. I think he had a valve problem I think that had to go and have the head off or manifold or something along that line so long ago now I’ve forgotten a few bits sorry. I know my friend had his remapped and made it so much more DRIVETRIBE might be something you wanna try down the road when you’ve got it running better love the content on the pug and Ferrari hope some of this might help.

I would suggest taking it to an old school garage with a rolling road and having the TPS set up and the air / fuel mix adjusted. It takes an undriveable car to a pleasure to drive.
I owned this car around 12 years ago! It had an mi16 engine in at the time running on R1 super bike carbs 👍

ceramic coating also works wonders on faded plastics, its restores them to a darker satin finish and wont need doing again overly often

if its a cable operated throttle check the throttle cable for smoothness. often the cable strands break internally and that cause snatching and on/off feeling on throttle.
I lowered the front only by 30mm to even up with the wheel arch gap at the back. Looks loads better and handling is good.

My second Peugeot GTi was a 1.9 that I kept for 12 years. It too would kangaroo at low revs, in particular, until I Super Chipped it. The garage mechanic who fitted it said it was "undriveable" after test-driving it, but my conclusion was it was much improved. I think they simply are like that and there's only so much that can be done to change it. Super Chipping does help but doesn't eliminate the amphetamine addict characteristics of what is supposed to be a super-lively car. Get used to it and enjoy it. I didn't give mine up until I could afford a Lotus Elise 111R (which I kept 10 years).

For the speakers mate you may find that normal speakers need adapter's , don't buy them! get a small piece of MDF cut some rings out to mount on to the factory placements and before you mount the speakers you choose buy a thickish sheet of wool off a roll cut pieces big enough as when you mount speakers you can push the wool in to shroud the speakers also some from of stick foam tape to make a seal round the speaker screw mount 🤣 sounds daunting but a couple of hours work it will sound amazing. I'd go with JBL speakers (my opinion) as they ain't massively expensive but on the whole they sound great 👍

Hello. I've owned 3 of these cars, all 1.9's, although the last one I owned was back in 2004. They all idle a little rough.. If I remember correctly there is a small black rubber pipe that goes to the throttle housing (I think it connects under it). Make sure that pipe is not blocked or split. Also, take out the idle speed screw and clean it and the hole it goes into. I think you can see this small hole if you take off the rubber pipe that goes to the throttle housing from the airbox and look inside the housing. It is very close to where the butterfly closes. Once clean, refit the screw and adjust the idle speed once the engine has warmed up. This may help when you close the throttle/come off the throttle whilst driving. Also, as said by another poster, change the SAD valve as they are troublesome and maybe change the vacuum advance as these wear over time and cause a loss of power.

My 309GRi had a really nice sounding Blaupunkt stereo as standard. I did replace it for a very early CD player but it sounded nowhere near as good as the original.
head unit. Go for a Pioneer SPH-10BT. Got one in my Alpine GTA Turbo. Holds your smartphone and plays music via it and sat nav and also blue-tooth phone etc. Cheap as chips and ive found it to be a fantastic piece of kit for the money. And its a single din.

I had a 1.4 (non GTi) with a cable actuated throttle butterfly in the inlet. The engine did the same "kangeroo" as you describe. Not sure if your throttle mechanism is the same: the cable on mine went round a quadrant piece to turn the butterfly through 90 degrees. At tickover, the cable slack was approx. 2cm, so the pedal moved a fair way before the butterfly started to move. I simply reduced the slack with the cable adjuster at the cable exit to about 8mm, and that sorted it out.

I also put a more powerful fuel pressure valve on the injector rail. I'm not sure if this helped get rid of kangaroos but it improved acceleration.
Autoglym bumper gel for the bumpers and trim. Leather - there is only one product. Gliptone leather cleaner and Gliptone leather conditioner GT22. Use microfibre cloths for both products
I said in a previous video about setting up the throttle, turn the air screw all the way in on the throttle body, it will try to die if you do it with the engine running and turn the idle screw so the car revs at 650 rpm, then rev the car three times everytime you adjust the throttle tiny screw maybe under a black plastic cap facing down, then open up the air screw large silver brass screw on the throttle. Make sure the engine is warm when you set it up, as supplementry air device on back of dizzy housing will be off (used for cold start on car) if your at it, check the rubber hose that comes from the SAD to the underneath of the throttle body, they usually deteriorate and the rubber perishes over time letting air out of the pressurised side of the throttle butterfly and usually gives the kangaroo effect you talk about, will cost you £2 in hose to have it 100 purring like a kitten, don't trouble the air flow meter there isn't anything you can do to it, there is a Allen key to adjust, but without the correct equipment it used to be a factory item to setup, there may be a tutorial somewhere online but will guarantee they either work or the don't and if its done you car will be flat as a pancake to drive. Happy tinkering

If you want a longer lasting solution to the fading trim take a look at Gtechniq C4 Permanent Trim Restorer. You may also be able to remove the lint left over on the trim from the towel with a paint prep solution, a DIY using diluted isopropyl alcohol in distilled water, or a commercially available one from Getechniq, Gyeon, CarPro, PoorBoys World, etc.

We had a 205XS (poor man's GTi 😂), bought new in 1987, and covered just short of 100k miles in it. It had the exact same throttle response you mentioned, even though it was the carburettor model..... Wish we kept it..... Thanks, Jack 👍🏻

@@Mexxx65 Correct - 1360cc, carb, not injection.... One of the first XS's. I think the later ones were injected.
I had a faulty MAF on my 205 GTi 1.9. It was forever stalling when coasting up to junctions.
Chris Davey I had exactly the same on a 1.6 GTi. So annoying. My pug garage at the time tried so hard to fix it and rarely charged me such was their empathy but it was never sorted. I wish I’d known it was just a MAF if that was it.
