    Hey John, I’ve been subscribed for awhile now and love your videos!
    I’m a fresh graduate (studied business management) about to enter Amazon as an L4 under the business development / vendor management function. I’m interested in trying out product management at some point in my career, and was wondering if you had any encounters with internal role switches during your time in Amazon (particularly from non-tech into PM)? I’d like to know what steps to take to set myself up for success should the opportunity arise.

    No refresher every year? Talking about refreshers every four years? Seriously? Amazon isn't worth it.

    Should you hold the RSUs or sell them as soon as they are distributed?

    So is this guy saying Amazon does not pay an annual pay raise regardless of individual or company performance besides the stock value going up (or possibly down)?

    also- if you get promoted within a company- does that include a new two year bonus schedule? Or are those bonuses only for external hires?

    Hi John, thank you for this video.
    I have a question:
    On your slide base salary is constant for all 4 years (200k), but I believe the base salary is should go up a little bit from year to year.
    The base salary can be 210k for the second year and the person can be promoted for the third year (for example up to 260k).
    It seems a little bit strange to me that someone has had no level-up for 4 years.

      Actually a lot of people had there Total Comp become less and less each year due to the drop in stock price. Even if they were high performers.
      Only sure way to increase is by getting promoted as you get a decent salary bump and not just relying on stocks.

    is it realistic to think that you could get promoted to a higher role after those 2 first years so you can make back that bonus in a new base salary? and how much are "bonuses" taxed at?

    • @theeALister
      @theeALister Рік тому

      These types of companies will usually figure out some way to bridge the gap in terms of lost salary due to the absence of bonus after a certain number of years. With that said, the usual tenure of a SE at FAANG companies is typically around 2 years. So it ends up being less of a concern.
      One other important factor is that not all of these companies share this same type of salary structure. Some of the FAANG competitors, and even Netflix, pay far more in terms of base salary in an effort to compete for the top talent in the industry.

    What do you mean you overindex? Do you mean at initial offer you negotiate more stocks or can you do this at performance reviews or yearly raise?

    • @ArdillaINC
      @ArdillaINC 6 місяців тому

      They do give raises based on performance every year (If you are meeting the bar is a smaller raise vs if your exceeding expectations) but either way they are not that significant since it’s based on the smaller base pay already. The way to make a big jump in salary at Amazon is to get promoted at a different level (Example going from an L5 to an L6 role)

    • @TheCustomer
      @TheCustomer 6 місяців тому

      @@ArdillaINC i joined amazon and its nonsense, promotion will take 3 years at least in my org and killing urself for 15% is nonsense, i am already thinking to move to another employer and get 20 30% instead of being overworked. Basically amazon think they own you once u sign the offer

    • @ArdillaINC
      @ArdillaINC 6 місяців тому

      @@TheCustomer That’s definitely fair. I think it depends what you want to do after your current role. If you are planning to move to a different role once you get the promo level. My base went up 15% when I got promoted but went up an additional 25% when I switched roles to a PM role. And I also hear you on the promo process. I’ve heard that it varies significantly depending on the org but even more if your manager continuously changes. In my team the promo process takes about 2 yrs on average which is on the faster side.

    • @TheCustomer

      @@ArdillaINC I am in retail non tech and most my org based in India, they work like hell for nothing in return. Every 2 weeks something new is added into our role and they dont speak lol so to get promoted is almost impossible. I would rather try to focus on trading stocks and make that money than work my butt off for 15% after 3 years while inflation went up the same % or higher. The only good thing I am in EU and RTO not forced yet so am enjoying it while it lasts and then will probably work elsewhere and this is definitely happening if they force us to RTO.
