I still have it in my box because I believe it will be a fantastic vintage sport car in 15 years from now. I’m now a happy owner of a Stelvio Veloce Y20, the best compact SUV ever made. Sold my BMW X3 (no complaints) to get a Stelvio 3 years ago. Only one minor issue with the interior rear tailgate switch. It has a much better handling/driving experience and it‘s easily the best looking SUV in it‘s class. Dissing Alfa for reliability in 2021 is a little silly, get over it. Nice review John! Love how balanced you are with the review, highlighting each cars strength. For what it’s worth, I have owned 5 Alfa’s in a row and Lexus RX 350. Once the software patches were released on the Quadrafoglio, Alfa have never had any further issues. (The base 2 litre ones never had any issues from the beginning). The UK magazine “What Car” runs an annual reliability survey. They have 18000 people respond with cars from 0 to 3 years of age. The Guilia came 3rd out of 14 brands in the segment and only lost out the gold medal Lexus by less than 1%! Pretty impressive and they have come a long way. Further if you Google a survey of the most satisfied drivers in the UK last year, Guilia drivers were the most satisfied out of every brand. More than Tesla, Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche etc. I can vouch. My now 3 year old Guilia Quadrofoglio has been faultless (like my previous 4 Alfa’s), has amazing ride quality and is without question the greatest 4 door ICE performance sedan on the planet.
Thanks John for the words on the Alfa reliability. Yes agreed what you have said re Lexus. Current own is350 21 but considering to move to Alfa Veloce due to face that I like that driving dynamics.

For each fault category, owners were then asked how much time was spent off the road as a result of the downtime. Additionally, they were asked to report the overall cost of the repair and whether the manufacturer warranty covered it. After the data was compiled, each vehicle was given an overall reliability score and ranked against the competition. The WhatCar? @@chasingcars the design of the Alfa is over hyped. Design is subjective when you look at somthing like 3 series & Merc C class. In this case the alfa even looks outdated. The IS curves in and out slopes at the back those hips the spindle grill i never use to like works here
@@walterndlovu6329 It’s subjective plain and simple, not only when you’re comparing the Germans. If someone likes the way the Giulia looks - that’s their business! Agreed that the IS refresh is a good design.
Both are great looking cars. As a previous 147, 156 owner I'm biased, so I'd go for the Alfa.... 10 years ago. The total 5-year running cost for either is around the $10,000 mark. This is based on 12,500km/year, $1.60/liter and servicing. This doesn't include tyres and brakes. At this price range you can't go past the Tesla Model SR+. No maintenance, minimal electricity cost around $500 per year, more power. Add to that 4 tyres at $1200 and that's it. For a car that's rear wheel drive, more powerful, more practical and spacious, comparable ride and will be better at collection than the day you ordered it. It will become worse for the 3-series, c-class, A4 and these two when the Ioniq 5 launches.
I must confess my attraction by Alfa style and also, in compensation, that, after having the painful experience of owning two Lancia in the 70/80s, have sworn no more by Italian (no problems, instead, with Fiat's!). These days, I think that more than ever a reputation is everything that many brands have, because I notice that some those that have good can have bad issues but nobody reads bad publicity, while those with bad reputation can have no issues but the bad name persists. I don't know, but I'm being owner of Mercedes and BMW since the early 2000s and, frankly, the issues have been much more than expected. So much that I decided to buy a Mazda CX-5 instead a X-anything for my wife (we are both happy with she) and I use a second hand BMX 218d cabrio manual for which I bought a full comprehensive service pack till the 100.000 km, really very affordable. And, here why I'm here, I'm thinking of a Giulia Quadrifoglio ALSO. You know, I trust more those who need to fight for a place than those who are sitting in the mountain.
I'm torn and undecisive between a Giulia Veloce and Lexus IS350 F Sport. Can't decide. I drive a lot so I'm also concerned about long term reliability.
I’d get the IS hybrid over the Alfa. Actually, that’s what I did. Alfa is a lovely looking car but IS is a very smooth drive, very fuel efficient in hybrid and never let me down with maintenance and running costs. It also looks absolutely great. I love the IS.
Recently I was looking to buy luxury sedan. Tested New IS and I was disappointed, really cramped at the back , no AC control at the back as well. 4cly engine was really weak. After that I’ve tested Alfa Veloce and 330i m sport. Alfa did drive nice and look as well, but at the end I’ve got 330i because its safer option when it comes to after sale support…
I may be misunderstanding the translations between Australia and the US here, but I’m confused on a few of your numbers. The 2021 ti sport here goes for 43k starting price, and the HP is 280 w/ 306 lb’s of torque. Perhaps the price difference is due to different import taxes?
John, say if the Guilia didn't have the Lusso Option pack and had the normal 18inch wheels, how would that go against the higher standard of the Lexus's NVH?
Yeah Lexus for me, i like the softness and luxury feeling that it has and even if the alpha's reliability can be good, the parts are expensive and less than Lexus. No matter the car, im not spending more money to a depreciating asset. Only thing i dislike is the stuck-on infotainment Lexus have, they used to be built in, there's no excuse for a luxury brand to cheapen out for an expensive price tag
The Alfa reminds me of my ex girlfriend. Great to look at, but too volatile to live with on a daily basis. It would be be torture waiting for the next blow up. Alfa has always made great looking and great driving cars, but unless I was very rich I wouldn't want to own one. I've owned a Lexus IS 250 for the last 4 years, best car I ever bought.
The Lexus would unquestionably be one of the most reliable cars one can buy but modern Alfas are far more reliable than their reputation suggests (and yes Alfas of old certainly deserved the bad rap!) I have had less issues and repair costs with my 2011 Alfa than many other cars I've owned of the same vintage. I like that they still carry the bad rap as it makes them depreciate alarmingly and I get them used in amazing condition for an absolute bargain :)
Srav - a bit of an outdated cliche? I have owned 5 Alfa’s in a row (Gtv, 156, 159, guiletta) and a now 3 year old Quadrafoglio. I haven’t had any issues with them at all, apart from the alarm on my current QV going off every now and then. I have also owned a Lexus RX350. That SUV made me feel very content with life and incredibly comfortable. The Alfa’s make me feel alive and contrary to popular opinion, were paragons of reliability. Still amazes me people think Alfa’s are unreliable. Just Google the UK magaIne “what car” and thei annual reliability survey and Alfa came 3rd out of 14 brands (Lexus came first). Google the most satisfied car owners in the UK and Guilia owners came out as number 1 - more than Porsche, Lexus, Mercedes owners. I hope this helps.

Whenever you get your performance figures and specs!?!?!? Lexus IS has 180kW and 350Nm or 241hp-258pounds of torque Alfa 206Nm and 400Nm!!! 276hp and 296pounds of torque
@@lisajason111 it’s complex and a reflection of the market differences more than anything else. Typically Australian market cars are fitted with more standard equipment than in most other markets (especially compared to the US market) because customers no longer buy the lesser-equipped versions. Legally they also have to include sales tax in the advertised price (in the USA this is added depending on the state, not sure about Canada). The other difference is that the average wage is higher in Australia than in Canada, so the price relative to this comes down, effectively. Canada also has also historically had to price it’s cars relative to the US market, one of the very cheapest in the world, whereas Australia is an island and can charge whatever it likes!

Lexus makes such boring cars to drive. The Alfa Romeo Veloce that I have is more fun to drive than anything in the segment. Also in the US we have a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty.
Totally agree so long as you lease it hand it back after 4 1/2 as leasing companies want to dispose of them with some warranty in place after warranty expires valuation falls off a cliff

Another review full of stereotypes... journalist, youtubers, press in general are the ones that feed stereotypes... how a guy touching the panel doors know the durability or build? are you kidding? the ONLY way to check that is disassembly them. Do one thing for yourself, go check the durability of an Alfa 147 and a Toyota Corolla from same year, touch the doors see the actual state of the dashboards, the looks the materials used a come again with that bullshit.
Well that's just a totally false stereotype. Sure the Alfas from 70-80s had reliability problems, but the newer Alfas are about as reliable as the german cars.

His "positive review" was FULL OF HEARSAY of ALFAS from 50 years ago. How many Alfas have you owned and lived with on a daily basis....NONE I'M SURE, because if you did, you would have my attitude when some clueless tool spouts cliché, unfounded reliability nonsense. Do you think BMW's are reliable ? Mercs ?
Audis ? Porsches ? (glorified VW's)....EVERYONE LOVES THE GIORGIO PLATFORM and all of the CURRENT Alfa products. You tugged on the center console and made a ridiculous comment about not being "glued together" like the Germans !!!! I just rough housed my 2017 Giulia Quads center console...I didn't hear a squeak and it didn't move....ROCK SOLID.....Be objective, don't be a sheep and repeat BS !!
Here's the data....
What Car? Magazine Reliability Survey
Last year, What Car? Magazine, a UK-based publication, surveyed 14,000 car owners and asked them to share their experience with faults in their vehicles. These faults were then classified in 14 individual groups which included battery, bodywork, brakes, engine, engine electrics, exhaust, exterior lights, fuel system, gearbox/clutch, interior trim, non-engine electrics, steering, suspension and other.
Survey awarded Alfa Romeo with a fifth place overall reliability score in a field of 32 manufacturers. Alfa Romeo outperformed brands like Honda and Subaru along with luxury rivals Audi, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. These findings prove that Alfa Romeo is a brand you shouldn’t overlook when searching for your next vehicle if you value reliability.
J.D. Power Alfa Romeo Giulia Consumer Reviews

The response from Giulia owners has been overwhelmingly positive, proving that Alfa Romeo remains a top choice among luxury buyers.

@@jamesterakazis6624 I love your passion. I don't think you actually read my comment properly; I have owned 4 Alfa's and quoted one of the surveys you mentioned. Please re-read what I said.
I currently own a Guilia QV. Best car in its class without a doubt.
Gulia all day! 🍀🍀🍀
Guilia !
Why did I have to rewind on the theme song? Very nice...and the review as well.
You didn't complement the looks of the IS enough. The alfa looks good when compared to others not compared to this IS
Design is subjective. Whatever you prefer is entirely up to your taste. Our view is that these are both really sexy sedans.
@@walterndlovu6329 Agreed, the Giulia looks outdated lol. Not sure what the hype is about besides of course it's handling.
In your 'humble' opinion 🤭
Alfa is Alive and lexus is boring.. No more to say
I bet the tesla sounds the best! Oh wait...
Excellent review. Love your objectivity. Both great cars for this segment.
What a wisdom bro!!
The Alfa is quite nice but Lexus is an overall better car. Cost is the same to maintain as a toyota. Reliability /maintenance wins in my book.
Well said chris.👍
I’ve been trying to decide between a lexus is and an alfa romeo giulia for my car. this is quite helpful
Alfa me and my friends, lexus me and my little family
“Standard Vinyl Seats”. No need to continue, Alfa wins.
I'm torn and undecisive between a Giulia Veloce and Lexus IS350 F Sport. Can't decide. I drive a lot so I'm also concerned about long term reliability.
Get the alpha I just got mine 4 days ago 🔥it's too dope
I’d get the IS hybrid over the Alfa. Actually, that’s what I did. Alfa is a lovely looking car but IS is a very smooth drive, very fuel efficient in hybrid and never let me down with maintenance and running costs. It also looks absolutely great. I love the IS.
I love ALFAs, funny… I prefer the Lexus.
Alfa♥️🇮🇹
Fun Fact : chasing cars always sends their tallest reviewer to review smaller cars . 😜😜😜
I didn’t know Gabe from the Office is doing car reviews in Australia. Lol
Epic Fail @ 3:55...Cliché Italian reliability nonsense .... Let's stick to the facts....not hearsay....
330i is a great car.
I love both Alfa and Lexus. But id pick the Lexus for now, it looks better than the Alfa.
Giulia Veloce for me =D
alfa looks so good i bought one.
Love the comparos. Keep them coming :)
Thanks! Will do!
I may be misunderstanding the translations between Australia and the US here, but I’m confused on a few of your numbers. The 2021 ti sport here goes for 43k starting price, and the HP is 280 w/ 306 lb’s of torque. Perhaps the price difference is due to different import taxes?
Yeah it must be different over there. Our Ti sport is 280hp too. I live in Texas.
Both cars are amazing but my personal favourite is the alfa for sure
I wouldn’t call that Lexus amazing. It’s a base model for ppl who want to say they drive a Lexus. It has vinyl seats for crying out loud.
Important points. Certainly there’s a lot to be said for the quality of the IS, which is well and truly proven by this point.
I like that they still carry the bad rap as it makes them depreciate alarmingly and I get them used in amazing condition for an absolute bargain :)
the giulia is very different from older alfas, which is better and worse. It is identical in everything including reliability to any other modern car.
Just Google the UK magaIne “what car” and thei annual reliability survey and Alfa
came 3rd out of 14 brands (Lexus came first). Google the most satisfied car owners in the UK and Guilia owners came out as number 1 - more than Porsche, Lexus, Mercedes owners.
I hope this helps.
@@johnmanciameli9752 Nailed it! My 159 JTD Sportwagon now has 260,000 km and EVERY SINGLE THING still works. No rattles, clunks or electrical gremlins. Bonus that it is a pleasure to drive and eats miles with ease. Couldn't be happier with the package, just wish they made more wagons!
'And while your down there'
Whenever you get your performance figures and specs!?!?!? Lexus IS has 180kW and 350Nm or 241hp-258pounds of torque
Alfa
206Nm and 400Nm!!!
276hp and 296pounds of torque
What do you think is the best looking Color ?
Could you explain why the same Lexus only costs $50k in Canada?
In what currency?
@@chasingcars checked. In Canadian which is parity to aud most of time
@@lisajason111 it’s complex and a reflection of the market differences more than anything else.

Alfa looks better, drives better, and is way cooler. Easy decision.
Totally agree so long as you lease it hand it back after 4 1/2 as leasing companies want to dispose of them with some warranty in place after warranty expires valuation falls off a cliff

JD Power quality surveys would tend to agree with us that Lexus build quality is higher than Alfa.
