Andrew Marr argues that Keir Starmer hopes to become Prime Minister at the next election. However, as leader of the opposition with a huge lead in the polls, he has arguably more freedom right now than he will have in government. So what will the Labour leader do with it? Well, it depends on the timing of the next election. But there are some things Starmer must address immediately: a clear message on the £28bn green investment plan, an answer to the challenges of poverty and inequality, and to decide whether he is the "heir" to Tony Blair, or something different altogether.

What a detailed and cogent analysis. I've been really impressed with the output of The New Statesman recently, Andrew Marr is the right commentator at the right time.
He's a weirdo

Absolutely.

Not so brilliant, he voted for Brexit!

Not only is Starmer not a Blair (which is not necessarily a problem) but the country is not as it was in 1997. People are more pessimistic, more cynical about politicians and the country's finances are in a far worse state. If Starmer is cautious maybe it is because he is acutely aware that he must not over promise and under deliver or in 5 years time he could easily lose power before he has had the chance to put in place the changes that need to happen.
Let's hope he doesn't get into power
Ah yes. Tory or Reform for you my lovely?@@Dusty2feathers

@@Dusty2feathers Why?
1997 Tories annihilated because of Major's SEISMIC, catastrophic disasters in '92.. ie Black Wednesday/15% interest rates/ bitter recession
and ''ever closer union'' the disgraceful Maastricht treaty when free trade morphed into political union with Europe. No consultation, no people's vote.
Major stank the room out, he lost the Tory dressing room, lost Middle England. And he didn't give a sh*t about it!
He was a barmy, kamikazi pilot....hell bent on destroying the Conservative Party.
What an excellent video! I'm sure I'm not alone in finding Andrew Marr so much better at The New Statesman than he was at the BBC.
Absolutely. I think it's because he can now speak his mind. At the BBC they're required to be politically neutral.
@@MrTimg12 They're not required to be politically neutral they're required to present the facts. Unfortunately the tories have managed to install party faithfulls to senior roles in the news division. Robbie Gibb is one of those and he has appointed himself arbiter of impartiality. Impartiality is in itself a falsehood, it forces - for example a scientist with 5 PHDs to be challenged by a conspiracy theorist who thinks physics is a lie. It undermines accurate reporting of facts. To be politically neutral is to relay those facts, if they turn out to be politically toxic maybe politicians shouldn't engage in behaviour that is toxic. Not infect a public news agency and corrupt it in order to fashion the news coverage to polish your turds ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Love Andrew’s Friday videos great listen on the train home after a long week at work :)
Oh I do hope Starmer watches this. Starmer - just get Marr as your part time advisor!
Always perceptive. Thanks Andrew.
Power is not the measure of a great PM. In fact, until we get proportional representation the country is doomed to be run by power hungry ppl who don't have the country's best interests at heart. We need REAL change.
I think if Starmer doesn't bring in PR he's likely to spend only one term in office.
Undoing 40 years of neoliberalism is going to take two to three terms.
If the electorate don't see much rapid improvement in their lives, and coupled with the constant attrition of the right wing media, he could be shown the door by the new 'Reformed' Tory Party.
PR would negate their influence.
We won't get real positive change with yet another Tory government.
I hope Labour HQ watch this video - they definitely need to flip the arguement on tax cuts, otherwise they’ll be too constrained to make a change if they get into power.
It's probably an easier argument to flip than many people might think: I’m not well off but would happily pay a bit more tax to (properly) sort out public services and reinstate some of the things we’ve lost during the Tory reign e.g. community centres, police stations (and actual police), libraries, NHS, Care, teachers etc. I could go on. But the interesting thing is all the people I speak to (mostly struggling financially) nevertheless agree with this sentiment. It seems to be mostly rich people who object to higher tax rather than poor people who rely on public services.
@@MrArchie800 i agree. I don’t think they should talk about raising taxes, but should challenge the tax cuts that will come in the next Budget - on top of the last ones, they will force more austerity and cuts. As you say, most normal people know our public services are broken. It’s the Tories who can afford private everything who don’t know this.
I have always been conservative, however i did vote for Tony Blair, at the time he appeared to be the right man for the UK. At present i am unable to understand what Labour Plan mandate is. Labour approach in my eyes would be to concentrate on delivering their blue print for the country. Rather than the constant tit for tating.
Politics needs to change from the Oxford and Cambridge elites, the Reform Party will get my vote in the next GE. Unless Labour can convince me otherwise wise.
Excellent, Andrew Marr. Such a superb analysis. You have confirmed my choice in the next election.
Good luck, Keir I say this as a Labour veteran of the 1997 General Election
Well said, Andrew. The more I watch you; the more I miss you on a Sunday morning.
Let's test the polls with a GE!
Great analysis on Sir Keir, but the 28 billion needs to be kept. A greener future is absolutely necessary, and this amount cannot be reduced.
you are effectively giving that money to china on solutions that don't work , in fact make it worse
I'd rather see articulated deliverables and detailed costings. Throwing 28 billion at a problem will result in being 28 billion down and the problem still existing.
Great to hear your views and insights Andrew.

I really like these videos - insightful and thorough analysis which ditches the pointless shallow hubris dished out by most others. Thanks Andy!
Come on kier , we are all waiting for you!
Andrew Marr is particularly accurate on the taxation argument. The Labour Party should have been making the case for more tax in return for more efficient public services for decades, drawing comparisons with other European countries. By not doing so it has allowed the Tories to convince joe public that tax is bad and egregiously hollow out the state since 2010. If Labour shies away this time it simply won't be able to fund the reforms to our crumbling public sector when in government.
The Independent's article on how the Corporate side of the Labour Party conspired to sabotage Jeremy Corbyn's leadership so that he would lose to Theresa May who they preferred and be replaced with a more corporate friendly leadership like Tony Blair. The truth is Starmer and his ilk preferred Boris Johnson than real actual help for the working class and unless this corporate capture of the Labour Party is rooted out it will be more of the same. Wars, corporate greed and the hollowing out of Britain for the benefit of the 1%.
The system works.
more tax is a proven way to make a country poorer, more money does not equate to more efficient services. We saw that under blair, he upped the NHS budget , worse results.
People should take home more of their pay, they do the work, it encourages investment, spending instead of giving to a public body to be wasted
@@davidmrenton Under Blairs labour, wages increased 25% over inflation, the NHS had its highest satisfaction rates, increased education standards, lower crime, lower poverty, better social care. The list goes on. Better taxation pays dividends to a country. Denmark pay around 50% income tax, they get free childcare, free university, free healthcare the list goes on. The tories removed the 45% tax rate to 'simplify' the tax code but left all the loopholes in which make it complicated. Tax evasion costs the economy £120bn a year! That's the budget for the NHS!

The notion that Sir Keir is having a rough ride with the press is utter nonsense, especially by contrast to the last leader of the opposition.
Maybe it's because he isn't giving the press the ammunition they need like his predecessor did.

I think a good phrase would be, "Let's get back to square one!"
Would love to hear Starmer make the case for higher taxes and public investment. Not Scandinavian levels, but more in line with the rest of northern Europe.
And as for the old trope that we can't afford it, the ONS puts average household disposable income at around £30k which amounts to around £600 billion of disposable income as a country. We spend around £10 billion going to coffee shops (about the same as what we spend on children's social care). We have a choice; we can spend our money on more and more holidays, meals out, tat to show off on Facebook, etc or we can spend it investing in our future via improvements to education, infrastructure, national debt repayments, etc. I think now is a good time to have that debate.
How about if 99% of us pay nothing, and we finally bring tech giants and the super-rich to heel?
At 1% interest rates maybe. But not now. Hard choices being made in this household on 30k and no, not holidays. The basics. We've just been walloped with over 2k in.ulez pa and no chance of a new car. Don't know wht planet you're in, but clearly not mine.
@@advocate1563 Why do you assume the taxes would be on you, rather than the 1%?
Quite possible a household on £30k will be struggling right now (depending on area, no. of children, etc), but I was pointing out that the average UK DISPOSABLE income is currently around £30k. Disposable as in money that's left after you've paid all your bills. So whilst some people definitely are struggling, the country as a whole isn't.
As for interest rates, they're high to bring down down inflation. Increasing taxes would also also help bring down inflation. Or the money raised could be used to help grow the economy via infrastructure spending or hiring teachers or whatever.@@advocate1563
Three word slogans are usually deemed to be best because people remember them. e.g. "Get Brexit Done", "Led by Donkeys", "Get Britain Working", "Take Back Control". "Stop the Tories". Snappy. Repeatable. Memorable.
I hope all opposition parties are gearing up with their offer to look good to their target audience. No need to reveal anything at this stage but hopefully, once Sunak pulls the trigger it will be "No holds barred", "Britain Expects Better", "Fix the mess"
I know 3 words is best, but I think 'Back To Square One" would be ideal, seeing as we are on a -666 at the moment and heading backwards.
Tax the Rich
Unblock the toilet.
I totally agree. Labour's being way too timid. With it's lead in the polls I think it can afford to be much more radical.
Welll said Andrew.
Labour could be messaging to grow the economy so we're all richer, as opposed to much money to the rich to make them richer.
It is not difficult at all:
- it takes 25-30 years to change the UK economy
- you have to make homes which young women feel they can bring a baby into the world
- you need nursery and childcare so a women feels they can return to work
- you need schools focusing children on maths, science, engineering, manufacturing so we grow an engineering manufacturing future generation
- then sit back and let UK talent then do the rest.
We begin with home building, childcare, and education. Get those right and 25-30 years later those people you caused to exist from good homes through good schools will solve their own problems their way.
We just have to survive the slings'n'arrows of those who made their money a century, or two, earlier, who own newspapers and TV channels here and abroad who just want us thick, poor, and divided.

The British people demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice the present for the future when the tories got in on the idea of austerity. It turned out to be a lie but I feel that most people were happy to have slightly less ib 2010 to pay down the national debt if it meant a better future.
I think as long as Labour demonstrate that they are willing to reinvest in the economy and infrastructure then the majority of people will not be too bothered about them rejecting the tories tax cuts.
They really need to focus on how high the national debt is and how bad the current public services are in the uk.
