Had been looking at possibly getting a Grace m905 just so I could have this feature and it turns out I can already do this with just any old mic and a few clicks on Cubase. Thanks for the awesome video.
I was awesomely supprised direct monitoring in Cubase / Nueno control room works with RME Total mix. Zero latency monitoring through the control room:) Awesome video tx
Here's a little known (aparently) feature of the on-screen talkback button. If you click on it, it's latching (i.e. you click a scond time to turn it off). However, if you click and hold, it becomes momentary (i.e. when you release the mouse button, it turns off). This is my preffered mode, as it eliminates the risc of forgetting that there is a live talkback mic (and someone inevetably makes a comment about the singers nose). Unfortunately, it's not possible to make the talkback button momentary when using key commands. There is no way for Cubase to know when the key is released. However, I've found a way, with my MOTO 828es audio interface. Apart from having a built-in talkback microphone, it also has a programmable pedal socket. I've bought a cheap sustain pedal and programmed the 828es to send the key command for Talkback on/off, when pressed and again when released. Voila! Momentary Talkback button without using the mouse. Hope this litle rant helps someone.
@Sven, I've just implemented that trick you've uncovered on one of my XTouch Mini buttons (using the value mode Jump). It's PERFECT! Thanks for that. Hope you don't mind me using your thread to give a huge thanks to @Chris for the video. Huge thanks, Chris!
I use the talkback all the time. It‘s a bit funny while I‘m in the same room with the singer and you can clearly hear the delay of my „weak“ digital audio interface setup. But I also added a shortcut to my keyboard so I can easily switch it on and off.
So I have the Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen, I'm thinking this won't work with this interface. I'm going for the scarlet 8i6, but don't know if I'll run in to the same issue. Any way you could show your wiring in a next video? :) thank you so much for this! Totally pointed me In the right direction
One thing I truly believe would be really handy... Instead of (or along with) the multiple inserts possible on the talkback channel, there should be FX send slots. From my point of view as a producer/engineer and a vocalist, I believe it gives the former to dial in to some of the same space s/he has set for the latter. Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic, but for me it's as much about the journey as it is about the destination.
#Tip, buy a cheap 'train conductor/announcement/paging/push to talk' style microphone, they usually have a stand, a flexible gooseneck and have a switch to temp open, or 'lock' open talkback - works even better, altho you will need phantom power for it. works great with control room - leave it open and use the mic to switch - no faffing with midi controlling the enable/disable req.
Definitely easier the way you describe it but do they "dim" the playback ? ( There are many cases where you need to help the artist "on the spot" while music is playing - like count in or anything like this )

Very helpful ❤❤❤
Hi Chris, does Talkback work only in Cue in Cubase 13 because I dont get the signal when the Main Mix is selected in the CR, thanks in advance
Brooo what an amazing video! Such an underrated and unknown feature!
Thanks a ton, bro! :-)
Can you insert FX into the cue send for the artist?

Awesome Sven, thanks for sharing!
It helped! Very worth consideration and I'll adapt that when I interface with it from now on. Thanks !

Changed back over to Mac did you? Thought you were on PC previously

You have no idea how long I've been wanting someone to make a proper video on this setup process
Hope you enjoy it! 🙂

@@mixdownonline great channel Chris, Cubase user here since Atari ST.
