Hey. I thought I would be able to uphold a schedule of uploading at least every 6 months, but here we are. I've been working on another thing before I switched to this one, so it's been some time, but I couldn't be happier about it.
I watched bsd for the first time in 2016-17, when the first two seasons were coming out, so it has been quite a long-time interest (obsession) of mine. The me from seven years ago couldn't have even imagined that I'd make something like this one day, and only in the span of five months. That's a record for me, not in small part due to how strong my bsd fixation is. It's pretty strong. Bsd influenced me a lot, and still continues to, and I hope it's coming through with how much love and effort I put into this. Working on this video made me so, so happy, and I’m really excited to finally share it. Love those guys :)

Belatedly, adding my rants and notes about specific frames here, because I finally decided that I want them somewhere people can read them.
This video is very much a love letter to bsd, a story I've been very passionate about for about six? seven? years. Some frames reference the anime/manga, and I really like having a lot of (maybe indirect) connections to the lyrics when I make animations, so you can look into that if you want. For this video I also wanted to do something interesting with colors, which I've seen a person in the comments pick up on, and it made me extremely happy.
0:11 - so, the first two shots basically establish the purple/red parallel I decided to go with, with purple symbolizing change, and red being the past and/or trauma, it's up to interpretation and might apply to the characters I drew here differently. But you get the gist. Basically good/bad, but a little bit more nuanced. The lyrics come into it too, also mirroring and being a parallel to each other. Yosano is on the red frames mostly because I wanted to put Kyouka and Atsushi on the same one. They're a package deal, don't separate them :( I guess you could also say that both she and Atsushi were saved by Dazai in a way, so it would make sence to draw them together. It could all just be seen as a past/present parallel too, there are like. layers to it.
0:14 - obviously Dazai got this line, since that man cannot be honest for once and just covers every emotion ever with humor. Very fitting. I also have never drawn Dazai before this video except like one time in 2018 and now I'm a certified Dazai drawer after doing it for five months. yay.
0:19 - the first idea I had for this section wad a plain shot of Akutagava with dark red background before it cutting to his death. It would've been more fast-paced and, the colors would've been there for the whole "Akutagava sees Dazai as the most important and capable and /good/ person in his life and would die if he asked" thing, but I really like how it turned out in the end. It captures what I was going for well, I think.
0:24 - for the people in the background I specifically chose Mori, Koyo, Oda and Natsume, the adults who have influenced Dazai's teenage years the most, directly or not. And for 0:34, Kyouka, Atsushi, Yosano and Akutagava - all of the characters whose childhood trauma comes up as an important part of discussion of cycles of abuse in bsd.
1:02 - I mean, this is a line about dogs. I would've been a fool not to go there. And the "they don't understand me" bit too. It fits the three of them really well. When I got the idea to make this video I remembered these lyrics and went "ohh I'm gonna make it so angsty it's going to be awesome people would be so sad" (I'm people). I was thinking the exact same during that bit with Akutagava while redrawing all the manga panels for the background too. There's something about art that just makes you a little evil I think. I just want people to see/read something I made and feel emotional, I guess.
1:04 - something about this line always makes me so sad, even though I can't quite put my finger on it. You know the whole thing about the characters' eyes in the manga? How the light in them represents how much good they have in them as people? That's sort of what I was going for with these shots and focus on the eyes, how Dazai contemplates if he could ever become as good as Oda was and if it would make his life feel any different. If it would make the world itself love him more and be more kind to him. Oda's eyes are closed though, of course, because he's dead.
1:09 - it wasn't my plan initially, but I decided that this part really fit Kyouka and her desire to break away from the violence the mafia taught her and leave her old life behind.
1:12 - this line. You know how Atsushi always feels like he needs an excuse to continue living, like he needs to justify his own existence by protecting people. And Akutagava doesn't exactly blame Dazai for what happened to him, but he definitely should. I think about that a lot. And I decided to use the red/blue theme they have going on for Atsushi and Akutagava in the anime, because I absolutely love it.
1:18 - this part doesn't have much to do with lyrics, I just really wanted some more of the Yosano and Kyouka parallel. Both were regular kids with families in their childhood (presumably for Yosano, but she definitely did live a normal life), both were directly or not used by Mori, both got out and found their happiness in the Agency. I really want them to interact more in canon, I feel like they are such good friends and want to see more of them :(
1:33 - fun thing I noticed when rewatching the anime last time is that when Dazai and Atsushi are celebrating defeating Fyodor on the ship, they have differently colored drinks, implying that Atsushi isn't drinking alcohol, I guess? I liked this detail so much that I kept it, even though you can barely see it.
The rest is pretty self-explanatory, I think. The sequence at 1:46 heavily references the ending of season three of bsd, which always makes me super emotional :') this sure is a wall of text, thank you if you got through all of this and thanks for watching.
Bro it describes the essence of Osamu's character so well. All his struggle to forgive himself, the beauty of his scars, his fear to lose someone close to him again, to trip down this hill and see the blood on his hands again, his love, sensitivity and caring nature, the cycle of forgiveness he started once Oda saved him. Damn. It takes a lot of dedication and empathy to understand him, you know. As a fellow bsd enjoyer and a someone for whom Dazai means a lot, I take my hat off. Titanic work was put into this, ladies and gentlemen.
I FEEL THE NEED TO TELL YOU THAT THIS COMMENT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME OKAY. Dazai is pretty much The Character for me in terms of how his struggles are written, and I'm so glad you think I could portray that well. It took me literal years to see some aspects of him and I'm sure there are going to be more to come, bsd is just that type of story. A lot of it comes from me analyzing my own mental health and views on life too, so he means a lot to me. I think that his character arc, if you look past special abilities and saving the world drama, is very relatable, with a lot of commentary on being human and dealing with life, grief and happiness. Again, thank you for your comment, I did put a lot of effort into showing all of that, and it makes me really happy that you took the time to write it.
@@faksyan BRO IKR. Never in the world have I seen such a masterpiece of a character, that is HUMAN, the irony, IN EVERY FREAKING WAY. Even in the fact you can't read him right away like the others. He's the first and the last character ever that I couldn't predict instantly or tell what he was thinking only from the way he moved, talked or interacted with others. He gives you these pieces of the whole puzzle one by one, and the more you know about him, the more you fall in love. Bro, I was SHOCKED and torn to shreds when I first realized what I just witnessed after his backstory. He was strong enough not only to change his ways, but to wait for damned 4 years in silence and pain to clean himself from his past, and then HE LITERALLY CHANGED AND CONTINUES TO DO SO. I wish Dazai realized fully just what a mission God put on his shoulders and how important it is. He is on the way to do it, though, so I think we should just wait for his redemption arc to come to an end finally. It's not so long until Kafka reveals all the hidden magnificence and beauty of his soul and I will be screaming my lungs out once he will finally accept that his past mistakes don't defy who he is and he has so many people he can trust right now. This is a beautiful tribute to BSD in every way. So much love and life was in every moment. It felt like every charcter's emotional journey was playing out all over again, all so fast and in such stunning color. It's bittersweet how Dazai was able to "help out some orphans" as Oda hoped and see the world as more beautiful, yet may never escape his depression. I've had depression my entire life, randomly flipping between moderate and severe, so his character really reasonates with me. Joyless smiles, persistent suicidal ideations, and a willingness to forgive everyone but yourself, all regardless of how good your life is, have never been portraried so well in any other story I know. Thank you so much for bringing him to life in this animation.
Thank you, truly, for a comment like that. I personally find a lot of comfort in Dazai and the portrayal of his depression, and especially how it puts a difference between suicide ideation and actively wanting to go through with it. Because, despite all that he tries, Dazai never really does, and I don't see that being discussed nearly enough.
I think about Dazai's speech in Meursault a lot, about how he and Fyodor aren't the ones that make the world turn, and instead it's the people who keep fighting, while they "scream within the storm of uncertainty and run with flowing blood", and I can't help but think that Dazai IS such a person. That he himself keeps on living, despite everything, that he himself isn't above being human, and even though he doesn't see himself as one, there are people around him who can maybe help him see it one day. It's that idea that you can live with depression while still having someone care for you, and love you, even if you probably never be cured, is what makes me really hopeful. There is another line in bsd about how you have to tell people it's okay for them to live if you want them to live, and I think about that a lot too. It's awful that the world wants you to just get over your depression and be magically cured, because you might never be able to, and that should be okay. It is okay. Because I think you still can find happiness in that, even though a lot of people tell you the opposite. We'll be fine. Thank you for your comment again, it means a lot to me.

Thank you!! This was something I wanted to do in the beginning, to include maybe a bunch of photos of different characters with each other, so no one would be left out. But then it felt a bit unfair to Kyouka, because she would be getting less frames than everyone else, and I just love her too much to do that. But Akutagava definitely does have a happy ending off-screen, be sure of it!!!

There's so much emotion, so much nostalgia; the colors and the lighting perfectly encapsulate each scene, and the theme of forgiveness in one's self and of re learning the value of life seem so prominent here; Dazai, Kyoka, Yosano, Akutagawa and of course Atsushi, they are all protagonists of their own story, and this animation beautifully displayed that :') it gave me chills, I love your style and I love the narrative you told to us through your art, thank you for this

Seriously I love this so much, it's incredible, your art style is so clean and expressive and the moments you picked were perfect. I love this song and always thought it fit for BSD so seeing this was such an awesome surprise.
Also its really nice to see an animatic with a bit more focus on the Dark Era, it is such an important part of the story but it gets over looked so often. I love how you also included characters like Yosano and Kyouka.

Omg the AMOUNT of DETAIL AND THOUGHT put into this is insane!! The animation is so clean and beautiful- I especially loved akutagawa’s scene of him growing up 🥺🥺 - as with atsushi and kyouka. I honestly teared up a bit 🥲
Also- I love that all the food after 1:46 was from scenes in the show! Like the alcohol from lupin’s bar, atsushi’s chazuke, kyouka’s crepe, etc.

I also love Akutagava's scenes a lot, I really wanted to show that he actually has people he's close with and who love him, especially Gin, I think her role in his life is often overlooked, both in canon and in the fandom. The sequence with food was inspired by season 3 ending in particular, it always makes me super emotional, I really like how they focus on details in it :')
Actually I need to add on a little more after rewatching it again-
I ADORE THE USE OF COLOURS.
How in the beginning, atsushi and kyouka are shown in blue, whilst Akutagawa and yosano are shown in red- this is seen repeatedly later on too.
I also like how the video in general starts off with reds, blacks, and more neutral tones, but then towards the end there’s lighter colours and it gains more vibrancy and warmth, making it seem like the characters have found their “homes”.
Plus, in the scenes when it cycles through the characters,(dazai, akutagawa, atsushi, kyouka) the white background contrasts the previous dark colours in the beginning AND the lines are in a purple shade! Mixing the blue and the red!
Paired with the music, it really gives it the feeling of healing.

But seriously, thank YOU for this amazing animation. I love how you presented akutagawa, (the scene with him getting “killed” with all the memories in the background is absolutely magnificent and heartbreaking).
I honestly aspire to be as thoughtful in my artwork as you were with this beautiful animation.❤❤❤
@@Myeyesareburning IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY THAT SOMEONE LOOKED INTO THE COLORS SERIOUSLY!!! I tried putting a bit of thought in color symbolism when I made videos before, but it was always pretty simple, and I wanted to go all-in here. Bsd is such as special case when it comes to everything, so I thought a lot about that, thank you SO much for commenting on it!!! The idea behind purple as in mix of the other colors I used was not intentional though, but it adds so much to it
