Yes, Robert Downey Jr is now an Oscar winner, but so is Cillian Murphy who would've been the perfect Doctor Doom. This move tells me that Kevin Feige just called RDJ out of familiarity because his previous risks haven't paid off.

In the end, even though Paradox said that stopping the Time Ripper would be a heroic sacrifice, Deadpool and Wolverine both come out fine. While Deadpool credits this to their healing factors, think back to Guardians of the Galaxy where, by sharing the energy of the Power Stone, the Guardians prevent any of themselves from dying while blasting Ronan with it. It was likely the same token here - they both split the resulting energy while Cassandra Nova got vaporized because she was only one person.
