@@cjrudd “Accidents” certainly do happen, I’ll give you that for sure…..Yes, the surviving crew really did a great job of trying to stay alive in those dreadful and deadly conditions however….My point is this:….It should NEVER have happened in the first place! …..Before the flight, the Navigator would’ve plotted their route on a Topographical Chart…This gives the height of all obstacles and obstructions, such as mountains….The Navigator then tells the Pilot what minimum altitude they should fly at any particular sector along the route…The aircraft was equipped with a Barometric Altimeter, which works on air pressure, and a Radio Altimeter….This uses a radar beam directly beneath the aircraft, which gives them their Exact Height Above the Ground….If it’s true their pressure altimeter failed, they should have aborted the mission immediately and returned home!….The weather was far worse than forecast, low cloud and snow showers….They descended BELOW their SAFETY ALTITUDE to try and break out of cloud….If they couldn’t see the ground, they should have turned back!…..They didn’t turn back, they carried on, descended Below safety altitude; and hit the top of a ridge!…..Descending below safety altitude whilst flying in cloud was a FATAL MISTAKE….A mistake that could’ve easily killed the entire crew…..The Pilot should never have done such a thing….This is what caused the tragedy, a tragedy that was totally preventable….The Pilot should have aborted the mission and returned to their point of departure because the weather was too bad….Too bad with cloud cover to be able to fly visually Above their safety altitude….The survivors did do an excellent job of group survival and should be commended for their actions….I understand your comment and I hope this explains ‘my own’ comment a little better for you….May those lost Rest In Peace….Former Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400 Pilot!

The only Antarctic crash with survivors is a remarkable story of resilience and human spirit. In 1979, an Air New Zealand sightseeing flight, Flight TE901, tragically crashed into Mount Erebus, killing 257 people. However, another Antarctic crash in 1971 involved a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying 45 people, with 16 surviving against all odds. Their tale of survival for 72 days in harsh, freezing conditions is a testament to human endurance. Stranded in one of the most unforgiving places on Earth, they resorted to extreme measures, including cannibalism, to stay alive. Their story has inspired books and films worldwide.

What a powerful testament to human resilience and the harsh, unforgiving nature of the Antarctic environment. This crew's ability to endure for 13 days with minimal food supplies is nothing short of remarkable. It's tragic that the camera, along with its invaluable visual records, now lies buried under the snow, likely lost to time. However, this lost camera also symbolizes the many untold stories of courage and survival that are hidden beneath the icy expanse of Antarctica.
